VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

There's struggling, like xbox one was, then there's whatever xbox series x|s are

The ratio is about the same as it was PS4/XB1. I think the numbers here may be too optimistic for the Series though.

It is all time low for the Switch. The sales per week dropped under 30k. This has never happened for the system.

Nintendo fully acknowledging a new system is coming in the FY might have had an effect on the sales. Nonetheless, Switch had a great run. PS5 not doing too bad for how awful Sony's output of games is this year.

People get sad when I post facts, but the console market is stagnant, especially high-performance consoles:

Add up the generations, according to VGChartz itself:

PS2 + XBox = 158,700,000 + 24,650,000 = 183,350,000
PS3 + XBox 360 = 87,400,000 + 85,730,000 = 173,130,000
PS4 + XBox ONE = 117,180,000 + 57,960,000 = 175,140,000
PS5 + XBox series = 59,470,000 + 28,830,000 = 88,300,000 (updating)

I've said it before and I'll say it again... there is a movement towards mobile and PC, in addition, the younger generation of players is more inclined towards mobile. In my opinion, between the PC and the console, the PC only loses in terms of hardware cost, as it offers:

  • Diversity of stores to buy your games (Steam, Epic, GOG, Windows Store...), which is the main reason why games are sold cheaper and have better promotions;

  • There is no console that performs better than an RTX 3070 or the current RTX 40XX series, so graphics quality and frame rate will always be better on the PC.

  • Depending on the number of games, there is a long-term saving;

  • You don't pay to play online;

  • Various services with Game Pass, GeForce Now and others.

    There are people who will hate my comment, but how can they refute me when Newzoo posts the following headline:

    "Last looks: The global games market in 2023"

    where in the article it talks about the platforms’ market share:

  • Mobile: 49%
  • Console: 28%
  • PC: 23%

    But you cross it with VGChartz data for the console market and you have:

  • Playstation (PS4 + PS5): 117,180,000 + 59,470,000 = 176,650,000 (43.68%)
  • Switch: 140,950,000 (34.85%)
  • XBox (ONE + Series X/S): 57,960,000 + 28,830,000 = 86,790,000
    (21.47%)

    However, the real market share of consoles is:

  • Playstation (PS4 + PS5): 43.68% * 28% = 12.23%
  • Switch: 34.85% * 28% = 9.76%
  • XBox (ONE + Series X/S): 21.47% * 28% = 6.01%

    This is why companies see a salvation in cloud gaming that will integrate consoles, mobile phones, televisions, computers and other devices. The reason Microsoft launches simultaneously on PC and XBox is due to the fact that the PC market is more profitable than any console alone. I would like to be wrong, but the numbers don't lie, just like I didn't make up the numbers.

I agree with a lot of what you said. The only thing I will add is that just because the younger generation is more inclined to play mobilePC does not mean it will stay that way. If I was kid I probably would have been forced to play mobile because my parents never wanted to buy a console. They thought it was to expensive and a waste of money. I was forced into PC gaming because my parents so a PC as useful for everyone but that can't be argued for a PC. Once these kids grow up and make their own money and choices will they still go for PCMobile or will they migrate to console? I'm sure most will pick PC or console after that.

I went to console because I can't be bothered with PC. I work in IT. PC gamers like you are great at making PC gaming sound amazing online but you leave out all the other issues with it. I'll just start with the hacking. Sure no paid online play but you get what you pay for and watching my teammates shoot through walls is annoying. I've never seen that on console. I could go and on and on with the issues I had but this post is to long already.

What makes an iPhone so attractive? What makes a Ferrari or other luxury car so attractive?

The similarity between these expensive brands is the concept of selling a transcendental product. Many times the user is not attracted by the quality of the hardware, of course these companies manufacture something with quality, but it may not be the best product, however they sell the product as something different that will bring status to the user.

I agree with you that when you work and earn your own income, you can choose your products, but there are things that when you become an adult may no longer be a priority. I grew up playing on the PC, when I started working I was going to college and started dating, the result of this was that my priority was work (8h/day), college (6h/day even more) and my girlfriend and family, that is , if I had 2 hours/day left to play it would be a lot... this year it's been 20 years since I met my girlfriend, along the way I had a daughter who is 13 years old, so I have less time and more costs, besides, she has a smartphone and a very good notebook, but I only see her using her smartphone, that is, it is a different generation. She uses her cell phone to study, access email, call, take photos, chat on Teans and Whatsapp, listen to music, watch series, read books, play... she doesn't care about turning on the computer or picking up a computer. console. Her friends are the same, so I must admit that my way of thinking and my culture are out of date from her generation's point of view.

I believe that Microsoft, NVidia and other big tech have already foreseen these changes and are developing systems capable of transmitting content to as many devices as possible. This is the idea of cloud gaming and cloud computing. If in the future these companies manage to guarantee efficiency equivalent to native hardware (current console), then we will witness the death of consoles, as it will not make sense to spend US$ 400 to 500 to be able to play casually.

As for hackers in games, I believe that AI will still be able to analyze each player and create statistics in real time to detect cheating, as well as offenses and other toxic things within the virtual environment. Furthermore, AI can be used to maximize process efficiency and minimize operational costs.

The market of dedicated game hardware---counting portable and arcade---, revenue-wise and adjusted for inflation, has been stagnant since the 1980s.

PC and mobile are the ones actually growing the gaming market. We had a brief pandemic boom, mostly led by Nintendo, but that is gone now.

Guess we could further break that down (estimating mobile/PC operating environment shares):

iOS 30%
Windows 21%
Android 19%
Playstation 12%
Switch 10%
Xbox 6%
Linux 2%

PS5 outselling Switch and Xbox combined in Europe. Total Massacre.🤭

To be fair, one of those other systems is pretty much at market saturation. Switch is slaughtering them both in Asia.

  • 0
Scoopz I-mar (on 19 July 2024)

Switch is at the end of its life cycle. Launch aligned the Switch outpaces the PS5, whilst the PS5 tracks behind PS4, with Sony thinking its peaked already. So no massacre here. Just poor analysis and an absence of context.

Mozart1511 Scoopz (on 19 July 2024)

Yes. The reports do not provide a systemic view of the gaming market, therefore, it is a "massacre" when compared to the same generation, but it is a worrying view to see that the past generation is difficult to overcome.
