The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360 launched in the US in November 2005, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. Xbox 360 US:

Gap change in latest month: 337,989 - NS

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,231,883 - X360

Total Lead: 8,417,644 - Switch

Switch Total Sales: 42,958,144

Xbox 360 Total Sales: 34,540,500

November 2023 is the 81st month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the Nintendo Switch outsold the Xbox 360  by 337,989 units.

Congrats to the Switch, and well done Xbox 360. Both of these are wonderful consoles.

Would the next console the Switch is competing against be the PS2 in the USA? If so did the PS2 sell near 46.4M in USA?

Yes PS2 is next and yes It sold 46.4 millions. If the switch beats the PS2 the only thing after that is the DS at 51.1 M

I would say it is a for sure thing Switch will outsell PS2 US lifetime sales. Getting to the DS though might be tricky, since we don't the details on the next system or when it launches. I am personally hoping it is fully backwards-compatible with Switch, and launches at the same $299. If so, then current Switch/Switch OLED would just be discontinued (as the new system could play current titles), with Nintendo keeping the Switch Lite around for some time until an eventual Switch 2 launches. But who knows what could happen.

Ok, so if I'm not mistaken these are the current numbers:
NDS at 51.1M
PS2 at 46.4M
Switch at 42.96M

I think Switch can sell at least 3M in the upcoming 6 months or so, given that during the last 12 months it has sold around 6M.

But having the Switch sell 9M would require at least 2 more years of the Nintendo Switch being the only Nintendo console on the market. Rumors have the next generation console to be released sometime next year (but there have been so many rumors its hard not to believe). We'll just have to play it by ear then.

$299 adjusted for inflation is about $375 Today, so I expect the launch price to be $399

Now to see if the next Nintendo system has the guts to ride on a similar success !

X360 still has one huge holiday season left so I think that X360 will decrease the gap after all is said and done. My prediction for month 103 is that Switch will lead with around 5 million units, so I guess that the peak of the gap will stay at month 58 with a ~ 13 millions lead for Switch. Great race, although X360 never was in the position to outsell Switch...
