VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

Agreed. The Spiderman 2 Ps5 bundle followed by the console redesign will push high numbers. Now if Sony has a ”true” showcase the hype will be outta this world!!!👍

Amazing for the PS5 and super good for switch, especially running in its 7th year on the market!

I’m noticing the PS4 numbers are quite up this year and i see that reflected in real life where they are readily available as a cheaper option next to PS5 everywhere for the first time in years!

Not sure if numbers for PS5 are amazing considering the internal target though.

Switch is neck-and-neck with PS5 everywhere except for Europe (where the PS5 is dominant) and Japan (where Switch is dominant.)

  • +2
firebush03 SanAndreasX (on 26 August 2023)

…so Switch and PS5 are neck-and-neck in North America? Pretty crazy given that Switch is in its seventh year and PS5 in its third.

Xbox is dead.

Almost as good as yours :)

the fact that my comment is the one getting downvoted highlights the state of fanboy-ism. y’all need to get over the “oh Xbox has a good game?? You mean bad game” bs. This is coming from a Nintendo/(little bit of )Sony gamer.

Here, get a tissue.

  • 0
firebush03 Draconidas (on 31 August 2023)

bro stuck in 2005 skull emoji. the only ppl needing tissues are the ones crying about other consoles' success. I get to play all consoles and all games...meanwhile, you're too stubborn to branch out and enjoy new experiences.

  • 0
Draconidas firebush03 (on 31 August 2023)

Here. Take the box. Plenty of tissues.

  • 0
firebush03 Draconidas (on 02 September 2023)

why you even have the box in the first place?? Seems suspect to me…you crying about Zelda now or something?

  • 0
Draconidas firebush03 (on 02 September 2023)

For people like you. So easily triggered.

  • 0
firebush03 Draconidas (on 02 September 2023)

hmm…okay. so you’re just donating to the community, that’s it?? I see…totally not a box you have in your backup supply (you run through them pretty fast so you got lots of backups). Gotcha. Well I appreciate the offer, but you’re good to us—I mean, keep them for someone else.

  • 0
Draconidas firebush03 (on 02 September 2023)

Nah. I'm not donating. It's a prize. The Triggered of the Week. You earned it. I'll keep it safe for you. I'm pretty much sure you'll need it sooner or later :)

  • 0
firebush03 Draconidas (on 02 September 2023)

this reminds me of in sitcoms when some guy wins some big prize and another guy is like “here I’ll take it for you. for storage purpose” or some goofy one-liner like that. you can use the tissues, I prefer paper towels (tissues dry out my nose and throat). I know it’s hard missing out on experiences such as Zelda and HiFi Rush :/ man you’re really gonna need some tissues wow

  • 0
Draconidas firebush03 (on 03 September 2023)

sitcoms huh? Yeah that was the intention. Dry nose? A skin moisturizer can solve that. Your throat? Well... there's something for that too :)

  • 0
firebush03 Draconidas (on 03 September 2023)

brother why use skin moisturizer on the interior of my nose and (dwayne the rock Johnson stare) for my throat when I could simply use a paper towel?? you’re all good to use your tissues!! watching sitcoms because you’ve run out of games to play (you only play Sony games and you go through them pretty fast).

Draconidas firebush03 (on 03 September 2023)

Dude, you are really desperate to find something about my gaming preferences lol. Anyways... I'm done with the conversation. Already looking for the next Triggered of the Week. Cya!

firebush03 Draconidas (on 04 September 2023)

i see. see you later bud. surely this abrupt ending has nothing to do with the fact that you want to keep the tissues for yourself…totally not! Anyways, hopefully those tissues aren’t used for anything now that you have nobody to donate to.

Is there any big game for the Switch for August and September?

  • +1
firebush03 CourageTCD (on 02 September 2023)

is Starfield not on Xbox?

Ljink96 (on 25 August 2023)

Nearly 7 years in and still putting up numbers like this, Switch is insane. Good to see PS5 hitting where it should being a newer console. The holiday season should be interesting.

2023 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 9.83 million units, [...] and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 3.14 million units.

That's more than 3:1. Hopeful Starfield helps boost Xbox console sales.

Microsoft needs to "differentiate" themselves. I'd make a console, even a $600 one, with powerful NVidia hardware in it. I loved the One X. Be different than Sony. The only things good about Microsoft are backwards compatibility and the controller design and cost.

  • -1
BonfiresDown (on 24 August 2023)

Will be interesting to see what Starfield can do. Like Spencer I don’t expect some huge sudden rally, but I do expect that sales will stop declining yoy.

Garrus (on 24 August 2023)

PS5 makes sense. I'm a frustrated ex Nintendo and Xbox gamer. Nintendo is not building decent hardware which is ruining their games. They failed and left the home console market. Xbox raised their prices and basically stopped making games. Phil has no fire in his belly. 360 > One > Series. That's downhill for 2 generations now.

Sony is the default choice. Very powerful hardware for a lower price ($400 USD), no Series S shenanigan's, pro model coming, and everything is just good in Sony land. The PS5 controller is MUCH improved from the horrible old PS controllers. I hated those old one, the PS5 controller is ok.

The only 2 things I hate about Sony are the controller layout, still find Nintendo + Xbox layout better, and I think Sony should give gamers a choice and bring those people over to their platform, instead of having only one controller design. The 2nd thing being the console is too large and ugly. I think the Series S is the most attractive console.

3rd thing could be Sony doesn't keep your cloud saves for free without a subscription. Very Lame.

Fix those 3 things and I'd leave the others behind. A 4th thing would be to add total mouse and keyboard support, but Microsoft screwed that up and Sony didn't even try.

No one cares mate. Your opinion doesn't reflect reality with the Switch's sales making it the 3rd best selling console of all time. Nintendo's strategy is one that the gaming community at large clearly endorsed. Following the opinions of the online vocal minority that you belong to would be a surefire way to commercial disaster in their next generation.

Im happy you like Sony. I do to. I own all 3 console platforms and enjoy and appreciate what each one brings to the table as opposed to wanting them to all take the same approach and converge.

Garrus Scoopz (on 26 August 2023)

Switch is a portable, it is selling well like the Game boy did, the DS did, even the 3DS did

it is not succeeding as a home console, don't pretend otherwise, totally different market

"Nintendo is not building decent gaming hardware" is objectively true. Nothing since the Gamecube. 20 long years. That's why they left the market.

  • 0
FlashmanHarry Garrus (on 27 August 2023)

For something that's not succeeding, it's still going to win this generation. The poor PS5 will be doing well to even get close to the PS4.

  • -1
Garrus FlashmanHarry (on 28 August 2023)

it's not in the generation

did people talk about gameboy versus Genesis sales?

DS versus PS2?

no, they used to understand that those are different markets

  • -2
Garrus Scoopz (on 26 August 2023)

it's a good portable, that's fine, but it is not driving gaming forward anymore

  • -2
fedfed Garrus (on 30 August 2023)

and why it should? there is no law that says that. if next Nintendo console will be a new NES with1980 visuals but manages to sell over 160mil those are the sales. next generation really just mean "new" console.
