Xbox Series X|S Outsells Nintendo GameCube - Sales
by William D'Angelo , posted on 03 July 2023 / 8,535 ViewsMicrosoft's latest video game consoles, the Xbox Series X|S, which is part of the ninth generation of video game consoles, has outsold the lifetime sales of the Nintendo GameCube, according to VGChartz estimates.
The Xbox Series X|S has sold an estimated 21.96 million units worldwide through May 2023, while the Nintendo GameCube sold 21.74 million units lifetime.
Up next for the Xbox Series X|S is the original Xbox with 24.65 million units, followed the Atari 2600 with 30.00 million units sold and the Nintendo 64 with 32.93 million units sold.
Breaking down sales by region, the Xbox Series X|S has sold an estimated 11.82 million units in North America, 5.98 million units in Europe, 0.44 million units in Japan, and 3.72 million units in the rest of the world. This compares to the GameCube, which sold 12.55 million units in North America, 4.44 million units in Europe, 4.04 million units in Japan, and 0.71 million units in the rest of the world.
Breaking down Xbox Series X|S Europe sales, the console has sold an estimated 2.03 million units in the UK, 0.88 million units in Germany, and 0.78 million units in France.
The Xbox Series X|S launched in November 2020.

It's insane to think about how well beloved the GameCube is now, but back in the day.......you could walk into a Walmart and get a brand new GameCube for only $50 by 2003 lol
Pretty good start for the Series consoles after only 2 and a half years with hardly any "must-have" exclusive titles. Starfield does seem to be laying out the groundwork for Xbox's future major exclusive titles. 4 of them already confirmed for 2024. So I think Series consoles have a really good chance of reaching, if not eclipsing, 360 numbers by the end of the generation.
I think it's a few reasons.
- People who were kids and teens during that time (or even early 20s) might have had to sell their games over the years or missed out on some. And considering Nintendo has never put GameCube games on Virtual Console or Switch Online, many are tough or expensive to get.
- I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people who played GameCube games never even had a GameCube and played them on Wii. Wii Family Edition and Wii Mini don't support GameCube games, but the main model before then did. So that's about 89 million units that can play GameCube games. Thus, about 111 million hardware units over time play GameCube games. Keep in mind, that's not that different from Wii at all. Wii sold 101.63 million units and Wii U sold 13.56 million units. That's 115.19 million units.
should pass original xbox sales in october or november
With GC nintendo has and Advance means about 104M lifetime sales in only few years. No like Xbox flop numbers and only one console.GC and Advance has more sales than ps2 in the same time frame
xD what the literal hell is this comment?!? My guy, GBA was a handheld system that was only $100 when it launched and Nintendo was the only option in the handheld market since the PSP hadn't launched yet. Yeah, no crap it sold that much in a few years combined with the GC! Xbox doesn't even have a handheld system lol. Just home consoles.
Which is why your comparison is nonsense. The GameCube flopped commercially. There's nothing wrong with admitting that. It led to the Wii with absurd sales.
woah...yeah, something personal seems to be going on here. VGChartz always highlights when consoles pass legacy systems with a news article. In a few years it will pass many more and none of those milestones will change the past and the credibility of a previous console. Not really sure why there is a need to downplay the current successes of a console just because you don't feel it belongs in the same conversation (or breath) as another console. Anyway, let's take that breath.
