Switch vs DS Sales Comparison - April 2023 - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 02 June 2023 / 5,910 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch will start its comeback strong next month with TotK, but there's a very long back though.

It's now that the battle REALLY begins

battle is over, the DS is about to be replaced by the 3DS, there's no battle when a new product is released already

Yeah but the Switch still has to close the gap which is no easy feat. What if next year Switch begins to get close but suddenly Switch 2 gets announced and the Switch's sales tanks?

The switch should start eating into the ds lead but I think it's a bit too far behind to catch it at this point, unless there's a price cut or major revision.

All depends on how far off a succesor is. If they hold a successor off till late 2025, the Switch should sell over 160 million. It still does a million a month easily outside holiday months.

does it mean anything is it outsells a product that was replaced? why not compare the DS+3DS sales versus the Switch then?

Well the ds was significantly cheaper and had a ridiculous amount of hardware revisions. The switch has had no price cuts and 2 basic revisions (the lite is cheaper but takes out to many features to be worth it, the oled is an improvement but not a big enough one to get people buy again)

I'm predicting between March and September of 2025. If that's the case, it's going to struggle without a price drop. And that's something I don't see Nintendo doing. They'd rather sell 30 million more units at the current price than 40 million at half the profit.

Unlike us, they aren't interested in how high the switch sales get. As long as the money is rolling in, that's all that matters.

But keep in mind the sales will tank once the successor is announced, not released. So whatever the release date is, take away 5-6 months of sales before that.

It's still insane to me that the switch hasn't dropped in price. I imagine that they'll drop the price around the time the switch successor comes out, which should expand their market a bit. My official total sales estimate is 169 million.

What a climb Switch will have to make, but with Tears of The Kingdom it could do just that!! ^^

A lower low means trend continuation in the gap chart. No reversal in sight currently.
