A new report from Bloomberg claims that Sony is looking to release the next-generation PlayStation VR headset in Holiday 2022.

"[Sony] is aiming to release the successor in the holiday period next year," reads the report citing sources with knowledge of Sony's plans.

The same sources also claim the next-generation PlayStation VR headset will use Samsung OLED panels. "Sony Group Corp. plans to use Samsung Display Co. OLED panels in its next-generation PlayStation VR goggles," reads the report.

Next-Gen PlayStation VR Announced for PS5, Launches in 2022 or Later

Sony announced the next-generation virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 5 earlier this year with plans to launch it in 2022 or later.

"Today, I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with more dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity," Sony Interactive Entertainment senior vice president of platform planning and management Hideaki Nishino said at the time.

Nishino added, "There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality."

Why wouldn't Sony use their own panels?

Sony produces OLED panels for professional monitors, not for customer products. Even their OLED TVs use LG panels. It is probably cheaper for them to buy panels than to run the whole operation to produce them in a competitive market. It is a common practice.

The panels can't be bigger than what they make for their phones though. So there shouldn't be too much additional cost and they would keep the operation in house.

Well, we know with 100% certainty that they cannot produce the panels they need for less than what they can buy from Samsung for. If they could, they would.

IIRC Sony and Samsung built the industries largest and at the time newest panel manufacturing plant through a joint venture but the downturn in Sony's TV division saw them sell their half before it was fully operational and since most TV brands today use the same or similar panels from a few makers and the tech each TV brand integrates into those screens are what they use to differentiate themselves from each other.
The benefit that Sony once gained from TV manufacture with it's CRT development and the ongoing role that development played in maintaining their reputation for producing high quality TV's was by the time they made that decision either gone or looking from the standpoint of how the TV division operates going forward no longer worth the investment. so making their decision to exit largescale panel manufacturing the right call.
