Nintendo Switch Sales Top 20 Million Units in the US - Sales

Nintendo's hybrid video game console, the Nintendo Switch, has surpassed 20 million units sold to consumers in the US, according to VGChartz estimates.
The Nintendo Switch reached the milestone for the week ending June 6, 2020. The console sold 98,487 units to bring its lifetime sales to 20,079,298 units.
It has taken the Nintendo Switch 40 months to sell 20 million units in the US. Comparing this to other current consoles, it took the PlayStation 4 a total of 48 months to reach 20 million units sold in the US, and 51 months for the Xbox One.
Comparing Switch sales in the US to other platforms by Nintendo, it took the Wii 31 months to sell 20 million units, the DS 43 months, and the 3DS 81 months.
Here is a list of the top 10 best-selling Nintendo Switch games worldwide, according to Nintendo's shipment figures through March 31, 2020:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 24.77 million
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 18.84 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 17.41 million
- Super Mario Odyssey – 17.41 million
- Pokemon Sword / Pokemon Shield – 17.37 million
- Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! – 11.97 million
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 11.77 million (first 11 days) / 13.41 million (first six weeks)
- Splatoon 2 – 10.13 million
- Super Mario Party – 10.10 million
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 6.60 million
The Nintendo Switch launched on Mach 3, 2017. The handheld only version, the Nintendo Switch Lite, launched on September 20, 2019.

What makes this achievement more amazing is that not only the Switch sold 20M in 8 less months than the PS4, but the Switch managed to sell 20M in 40 Months with only 3 Holiday seasons compared to PS4's 4 Holiday Seasons in had over 48Months, which really shows how much faster the Switch is selling in the U.S and shows the Switch's dominance.
Wii sold 41 million in the US. I'd say that could also be the lifetime target for Switch in the US. It's about half time.
The Switch has the advantage of being a hybrid, which IMO gives it a lengthier lifespan because its technology is not going to feel outdated for years to come. Not saying I don't want Switch 2, but I want Switch 2 to be a continuation of Switch rather than a completely new platform with the other one being pointless (I'd hate to see Nintendo repeat the same mistake they did by prematurely ending the SNES and Wii).
Also, there's a lot more growth, the Switch is the successor to the Wii and DS/3DS marketspace. And Nintendo has time to release some key products that might appeal to some of those who have yet to buy into the new generation. Nintendo built this fanbase over years: NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, DS and Wii. Switch is the next in line.

The biggest question with Switch is if Nintendo will do a Switch Pro or an actual Switch 2 - Switch 2 in the sense that it would "start over" in terms of installed base numbers, whereas a Switch Pro would be treated more as a PS4 Pro/Xbox One X kind of deal. If Nintendo does a Switch Pro, and therefore extends the lifetime of the family, I think Switch as a real shot at taking the PS2's crown. Yes, I said it. Imagine this: next summer, Nintendo releases three new Switches. Two of them, Switch Lite and regular Switch, based on a 7-nm die shrink of the current processor. A third, Switch Pro, based on a 7-nm upgraded processor. Switch Lite drops to $149; Switch drops to $249; and Switch Pro with its upgraded processor and hopefully 1080p OLED display goes for $349. All still priced under either PS5 or XSX, with the bottom $149 Switch Lite now reaching the 3DS price-range. Sales would skyrocket for years to come.
Damn, what a fantastic top ten list! Switch users have such good taste compared to Xbox and Playstation users. There's not a single sports franchise, CoD, or generic racing sim to be round in this list.
Wow I can't believe how much faster it hit 20 million than the PS4. I was kind of under the impression it was behind in the US. Apparently its crushing it! Wow the Wii to 20 million will never be beat, too bad it died off rather quickly.
If only it didn't have supply constraints in recent months! The Switch was poised to cash in over the isolation period and alas they were nearly impossible to find, and even now it's reallly difficult in my area. I know Nintendo typically have a console cycle of 6 years (give or take) but I'm not sure the Switch can cut the mustard for another 3 years considering next gen is almost here. You only have to look at how many games are NOT coming to the Switch in 2020-21 and this will only increase as time goes on. Hell, even last gen ports like Borderlands or X-COM had to be majorly downgraded to run on the Switch. I feel like the Switch has a bright future but IMO they should be considering a "Switch 2" in holiday 2022, not 23-24 as many experts have predicted.
45-50 million is what I’m thinking in terms of lifetime US sales at this rate.
