Epic Games CEO: Unreal Engine 5 Tech Will Be Awesome on PS5 and Xbox Series X - News

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney via Twitter said Epic and Sony spent years discussing the future of graphics and storage, which is why the demo ran on the PS5.
The Nanite and Lumen technology in Unreal Engine 5 will both be fully supported on the PS5 and Xbox Series X and will look awesome on both consoles and high-end PCs. The features will be scaled down to run on current-generation consoles.
"The Unreal Engine 5 demo on PlayStation 5 was the culmination of years of discussions between Sony and Epic on future graphics and storage architectures," said Sweeney. "The Nanite and Lumen tech powering it will be fully supported on both PS5 and Xbox Series X and will be awesome on both."

"And with features for scaling the content down to run on current generation platforms using traditional rendering and lighting techniques," he added.
Unreal Engine 5 will launch in preview in early 2021 with a full release in late 2021. The engine will support the PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, Windows PC, Mac, iOS, and Android.
Sony and Microsoft will launch their next generation consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, respectively, in Holiday 2020.

the issue is it was running at 1440p at 30 fps, since it was near maxing out the gpu. What happens if you add multiple npc and particle effects, explosions and such. Though the game had 8k textures, if they dropped it to 4k would it look much different? i wonder if mesh shading/variable rate shading is possible with this kind of tech shown in the demo.
Maybe the demo could have run at a higher resolution and framerate on Series X? It's unclear. It's awesome that Sony is coming to the party with such a great SSD but the one in Series X is no slouch and when it comes to CU's and memory bandwidth the Series X is clearly in front.
It's reminiscent of the battle in the 4th Gen, where the SNES had the better graphics abilities and the Mega Drive (Genesis) has the superior speed...
I notice he only pointed out Nanite and Lumen tech present on XSX. That SSD is far more important and capable than anyone realized. PS5 is going to be a beast of a machine.
so multiplats will look the same next gen, it's only ps5 exclusives that use the ssd to it's advantage with unreal 5 , where things can stand out. I'm not sure how long tim and sony have been in the talks regarding storage solutions, since back in 2016, he thought we would need 40 teraflops to have quixel tech environments with non static lighting.
I looked up Sweeneys exact wording, because i got curious after reading he supossedly said such and such a couple of times.
“You know, we’re getting to the point now where we can render photo-realistic static scenes without humans with static lighting,” Sweeney said in an interview with Gamespot. “Today’s hardware can do that, so part of that problem is solved. Getting to the point of photo-realistic dynamic environments, especially with very advanced shading models like wet scenes, or reflective scenes, or anisotropic paint, though…maybe forty Teraflops is the level where we can achieve all of that.”
- Photorealistic is open for interpretation. I woudn't call the UE5 demo photorealistic. The protagonist is far from, so is the environment, the little foliage, the statues.

That part of the article is incorrect. UE5 has been confirmed for all current gen consoles, including the Switch.
