The combined sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One after 75 months on the market are six percent higher than the combined sales of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 after the same amount of time, according to Video Game Industry Analyst at The NPD Group Mat Piscatella.

The PS4 and Xbox One are also 16 percent ahead of the combined sales of the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox after the same amount of time.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 sold a combined 72.13 million units lifetime in the US, according to VGChartz estimates. The PS4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 60.12 million units through February 8, which means the two consoles need to sell another 12.01 million units to outsell the PS3 and Xbox 360.

In the end they will all be pretty similar, Zhugex noted that PS4/XBO are slowing down notably faster than PS3/360.

Lack of the second peak with kinect and move was expected that the PS360 would pick up. WW though I think PS4+X1 will finish ahea even if only because PS4 can do 130M alone.

I see he took the time to align the PS3 & 360 with each other. They were released a year apart, as opposed to the same month like the PS4 & XBO. As of the end of December, aligned sales were indeed about 6.3% higher for the PS4 & XBO. However, that lead is quickly evaporating. At the start of 2019, that lead was 15.3%. At current rates, the PS4 & XBO will be at a deficit against the PS3 & 360 before the end of this year. However, they have maintained and grown their lead over combined PS2+OXbox sales, and will pass those systems in lifetime sales entirely very soon. At final count, the PS2 & Xbox had a combined total of 60.9M, while as of Dec. 2019 the PS4 & XBO were at 59.6M, so only 1.3M to go.

Console gaming not going anywhere. Can people finally shut up on this being “the last console generation”?

siebensus4 (4 days ago)

It's only in the US. Worldwide we have a different picture. PS3 + 360 were 173.2 M combined, but currently PS4 + XBO have only 153.5 M. So worldwide the sales of PS4 + XBO are 11.3 % lower after 75 months. The gap of 19.7 M should be closed after all is said and done, though.

Anybody has any idea what would be the ratio between them? According to VGC it was 28.2 to 24.4 at the end of 2018.
