Ratchet & Clank Plays Like Ratchet & Clank

Ratchet & Clank Plays Like Ratchet & Clank - Preview

I was pretty worried that a game based on a movie based on a game version of Ratchet & Clank, one of my favorite franchises, would feel very much like a cash-in, even with Insomniac developing. The good news is that while this definitely is a cash-in, it doesn’t feel like one, which creates a satisfying experience for fans of the old games.

If you were hoping for sequel-level changes, you may be a little disappointed here. Ratchet & Clank is a franchise reboot, and it borrows a lot from the games that came before it. The basic formula here is unchanged; smash, blast, and platform your way to the end of the linear level. Luckily when it came time for Sony to tie in the game to the movie, they didn't outsource development to some B-team, but gave it back to its original creators, and Insomniac seem to be doing a great job with this entry.

Familiar guns also make an appearance like fan-favorites Groovitron and Mr. Zurkon, although new ones are also present like the Pixelator, which is a shotgun that pixelates your enemies with every blast. The trusty wrench makes its triumphant return as well. It serves its bashing and breaking purpose well, as well as twists bolts to activate switches.

Platforming is still tight and fun, and the gunplay is carried by a variety of atypical weaponry. If you are looking for a new leap for the series, I can’t say I found one during my time with the game, but I’ll certainly enjoy what’s here when it release. It’s full of quipy dialog, rambunctious characters, and bright gameplay. The graphics have never looked better either.

Ratchet & Clank will be available for PS4 in the spring of 2016.

This is what I wanted. A full ratchet experience that plays like ratchet. A4O dissapointed, nexus was short and FFA didnt last long. I hope this sells well and encourages them to work on a new ratchet clank subseries on the scale of future series

This article seems to come off extremely negative but, hey, what did you expect? They don't change Mario or Zelda or anything like that. They follow a similar formula for a reason. It's what folks have come to expect and what they love about the franchise in the first place.

It irritates me to know this game is complete and they refuse to release until 2016 so it can be released alongside the movie while the 2015 lineup is empty.

How many are exclusives?

I don't understand why a game needs to be exclusive before some people want to play them. I genuinely don't.

Up Your Arsenal was the last decent Ratchet and Clank. Deadlocked was trash and it's been all bad since then.
