No Split Screen Co-Op for Halo 5: Guardians

No Split Screen Co-Op for Halo 5: Guardians - News

by Jared Katz , posted on 09 June 2015 / 7,157 Views

Today Halo fans got both some good news and some rather unfortunate news

First the bad. It has been confirmed that Halo 5: Guardians will be the first Halo game to not have split screen co-op. There is currently no explanation from 343 Industries or Microsoft for the removal of this feature.

On the other hand it's been confirmed that players won’t need to have an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play online co-op.

343 Industries has also announced that it will add 15 additional multiplayer maps as free DLC. These maps are expected to all be released by June of next year.

I like how the article focuses on the negative and puts the positive (15 free DLC maps) at the very bottom under the video.

Perhaps because a major staple of the series is being taken away. I compare it to Gears of War losing local co-op.

Halo 5 launches the end of October and 15 maps between now and June '16 isn't a huge amount of content to be positive about, given that this game will be selling subs to XBLG then giving out extra content for it for free makes business sense.

Ok, Halo has ALWAYS had split screen Co-op so WTF?

Mr Puggsly (on 09 June 2015)

Are they saying no split screen at all or just campaign?

Nothing about split-screen multiplayer, yet. Just no split-screen co-op.

Would be strange if you can't do the party online play like you could with 3/4/reach but if they want to hope to keep it locked at 60fps and not compromise that for anything including fun factor then I would reckon that feature will go too, well until E3 because I could see them doing a 180 of this hopefully.

Few things have depressed me more than the death of local coop... Nintendo seemed to be holding it down but even Splatoon offered some pointless 1v1 mode.

I don't have an Xbox 1, though, so I suppose it doesn't matter... Out of curiosity, how can you play online coop without an Xbox live account if it's not split screen?

What they mean is that you don't need a GOLD account, you can play with any SILVER account, but you still need to be online to play coop, only diference is you can play online coop without paying for xbox live GOLD suscription.

Huge let down :/, always played split screen with my cousin.

Oh 343... you let me down. I always played Halo in coop with my girlfriend. No way I'll buy 2xX1 or play it alone. >.<

I'm disappointed in the lack of split screen coop. It has always been a way of me and my brother to bond. Yet 15 free maps?! I could totally get behind that!

It's both the end of the world and a new reason to hate on Halo....

Seriously it's not the main meat and veg of the game, if that was the case then people wouldn't be playing it online as much and even then most games have dropped split screen these days and the majority have been fine with it, yeah it sucks but times change.

Help us Bungie... you are our only hope.

Ha, they're to busy with the Destiny sequel :/

No reason to get an XBO, I guess. I'm a big fan of Halo but Legendary co-op with my sibs was always a big part of that.

No point in getting any console then. Nowadays, split-screen is being supported less and less. Consoles simply can't handle split-screen on graphically intense triple A games.

No split-screen doesn't mean you can't enjoy a great game though.

Local co-op was always the main selling point for me when it came to the Halo series.
Now I really have no reason, ever, to pick up an Xbox One.

60 fps can suck my d***.
I'd rather play in 30fps SD to be able to use a co-op split screen mode (and local 4-players multiplayer)

Chazore SirFortesque (on 10 June 2015)

I'd rather choose 60fps anyday tbh, not that many people do split scren these days and not many games support it at that.

Ganoncrotch SirFortesque (on 10 June 2015)

Chazore do you think it would be impossible to program a split screen version of a game to run at 30fps and allow the single player full screen master race to enjoy their 60fps? Just stating that something being 60fps is great, but if that means you need to go and buy another X1 and set it up on another screen to play couch co-op Halo... that's a bit much. Online co-op can never compare to couch co-op IMO.

That's pretty terrible news tbh.

Another death-blow to people who actually enjoy interacting with people in person rather than through a headset.

People need to get mad about this, if we can make Steam change their minds we can do the same for 343. This is a huge mistake and they have to change it. I don't care if they have to push the game back but, they must correct this error or they might just lose alot of customers.

This news has ruined my day. I am tired of these gimmicks that ruin everything from movies to games and now, now its killed Halo for me. I won't buy this game if they don't change this. I have always played with friends either at my place or theirs, and we always had a great time, some of my best moments playing games come from co-op campaign, and Halo was one of the few that still have it, and now, now its just gone. damn you 343 and damn you 60fps. I now have to go find something else to play now, hopefully they don't do this with Gears of War.

I'm sorry that you 15 free maps have ruined your day and killed Halo for you.
All sarcasm aside now, because of the amount of people ridiculing 30fps and claiming how unplayable it is coughPCelitestscough every FPS console game is gonna aim for that 60fps mark. All we can hope for now is a solution for split-screen mode with 30fps cap.

I like the 15 new maps, but splitscreen co-op is a shame since couch mp is already as rare as it is on both PS4 and Xone
