Kaz Hirai, who oversees Sony's video game and consumer electronic businesses spoke at a roundtable with reporters during the Consumer Electronic Show. He reiterated that the PlayStation 3 was designed to have a 10 year life cycle and there is no need to rush out the PlayStation 4.
A reporter asked Hirai about Andrew House's comment that there would be no PlayStation 4 announcement at E3 this year. House is the head of Sony's video game division. "Andy is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3,” Hirai said. “I’ve always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that."
However, even with a 10 year life cycle for the PlayStation 3, that doesn't mean there won't be any overlap between the current generation and the next generation. The PlayStation 2 which is 10 years old is still selling despite the fact that the PlayStation 3 has been on the market since 2006. While there won't be an announcement at this years E3, Hirai didn't rule out one next year.
