PSP2 Announced, Codenamed NGP, Coming This Holiday

The much-anticipated PSP2 is not going to be called a PSP2 at all. Instead, it'll be codenamed NGP (Next Generation Portable) and it's coming this holiday season in Japan. Sony's unveiling tonight in Japan produced a ton of details, so come with me on a magical journey/bulleted list:
- Revolves around five key concepts: Revolutionary User Interface, Social Connectivity, Location-based Entertainment, Converging Real and Virtual (augmented) Reality
- 5" OLED touchscreen
- 960 x 544 resolution (four times more than the PSP); graphics will rival PS3
- Dual analog sticks (not nubs!)
- 3G
- Built-in WiFi
- Rear-mounted touchpad (directly under the front screen, and the same size, too)
- Accelerometer/gyroscope (same tech as in PlayStation Move)
- Electronic compass
- GPS
- Front- and rear-facing cameras
- UMD format being abandoned; games will be on flash-based "new media" (looks a bit like a DS cartridge, but no specific name yet)
- Compatible with PlayStation Suite (basically the Android phone PSN)
- New user interface called LiveArea, featuring cross-game social networking
- Trophies
- First handful of game demos: Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone, Resistance, Little Deviants

That all sounds super cool, no? Here are the official tech specs from Sony, and check out the pile of NGP images in the gallery below (sorry about some of the engadget watermarks):
- CPU: ARM Cortex-A9 core (4 core)
- GPU: SGX543MP4+
- External Dimensions: Approx. 182.0 x 18.6 x 83.5mm (width x height x depth) (tentative, excludes largest projection)
- Screen: 5 inches (16:9), 960 x 544, Approx. 16 million colors, OLED
- Touchscreen: Multi-touch screen (capacitive type)
- Rear touchpad: Multi-touch pad (capacitive type)
- Cameras: Front camera; rear camera
- Sound: Built-in stereo speakers; built-in microphone
- Sensors: Six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer); three-axis electronic compass
- Location: Built-in GPS; Wi-Fi location service support
- Keys/Switches: PS button; power button; directional buttons (Up/Down/Right/Left); action buttons (Triangle, Circle, Cross, Square); shoulder buttons (Right/Left); right and left sticks; Start button; Select button; volume buttons (+/-)
- Wireless communications: Mobile network connectivity (3G); IEEE 802.11b/g/n (n = 1x1) (Wi-Fi) (Infrastructure mode/Ad-hoc mode); Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (A2DP/AVRCP/HSP)

There's only one question that remains: can Sony's NGP compete with the 3DS? We won't have to wait long to find out.

Now the real question is... will it have Rrrrriiiiiidge Rrrrrraaaaceeeeeer?
Specs look awesome but only really interesting hardware feature to me is the rear touchpad. I'm not sure what that will be like or how well it will work (touch pad that you can't see might be tricky) but its certainly an intriguing design choice that will cause it to be something different. Unlike the rest of the console. I'm also worried by the demos listed. Of those only LBP is the right sort of thing for a portable game (well I don't know little deviants to be honest, could be as well). Software was one of the things that killed the PSP, Sony assumed that what consumers wanted was exactly the same thing as they wanted on their home consoles. I am somewhat biased, but this definitely is not enough to change my prediction that the 3DS will dominate the coming generation of handhelds. Price will be a factor of course, but I think to have a chance Sony would have to undercut the price of the 3DS - with those specs it seems unlikely that they will.
teigaga, I think thats where your problem is, most of those games you've mentioned did not sell in bucket loads. Killzone, Resistance, Uncharted, and little big planet never stood up to the level that Microsoft or Nintendo's first party games did, which in most cases sold over 5 and 10 million copies... doesn't matter how much you paste up Sony's wonderful Tech specs, the facts are without MUST HAVE killer titles, Sony's consoles will always lag behind the rest. believe or it not, Sony is in last place for a reason!... great tech also means high prices!. and if you didn't know, 69% of the world is still in a recession. so while I love the PSP2 Specs, I wanna really play games in 3D, to me that knocks out everythign that Sony has shown me,.. Nintendo all the way baby.
I'm sorry but, are you serious? Sony has just shown the most amazing line up of games, such as Killzone, Resistance, Uncharted, and little big planet, just to name a few which have sold truck loads on the PS3. Not only that but they have announced a new CoD, which will sell trillions more, AND they showed that the NGP is capable of playing port PS3 games such as MGS4! I haven't been so excited about a consoles software line-up in a long time! I am probably being a bit bias because most of those games dont appeal 2 me but more than anything im judging on populariyy/sales not their quality. Little big planet and uncharted have sold well but Killzone and resistance are both considered flops with Kz selling jus over 1mil and resistance not even reaching that mark yet. But i guess i cant offer any alternatives because sony has never really had any massive 1st party titles like halo, zelda or mario which help shift systems. But i dont think they should bother pushing games with "meh" success and a weak following, instead focus on new Ips or develop ones with real potential to sell to the masses. COD being announced is good but i dont see people picking up this version over the PS3 or 360. i guess thats where my problems lie, I doubt the PSP2 biggest selling titles are gonna be home console ports but instead the experience created exclusively for that handheld.
@teigaga, my first thoughts about NGP: WOW!!!!!!!!! @Red4ADevil, you have to be joking me..NGP is way out of the league of 3DS, and it will more than likely cost more than the 3DS, look at the specs! Or would you like me to compare both handlhelds!! Use your logic. I for once prefer to play a hanheld with look a like PS3 graphics, playing the 3DS w/ downgraded graphics....mmmmhhhh, no thanks, plus if people see me with one they might think im a child, embarrasing(and this is mainly the audience Nintendo has, 14 and younger), and i already have 3D w/ my PS3, so the 3D is irrelevant for me. Just to throw it outhere, there are afew TV's coming this fall that do not require 3D glasses to be able to experience 3D. @Burning Typhoon, just remember that theres alot of kids outhere that wear very thight pants, girl pants if you ask me, you can barely fit anything in their pockets...ouch.
@Burning Typhoon What kind of pants are you wearing if you can ''easily fit 2 NGPs in a single pocket''? My DSi barely fit in my jeans pocket and NGP is like 1.5 time the size of the 3DS which is the same size as the DSi.
On thats all going to boil down too; I don't care what console it is (even for a nintendo loyalist like myself) If its anything over the 3DS price then kiss sony goodbye. But were going to have to wait. Sony, I hope you know what your doing cuz if don't, then your gonna get bitten in the ass even harder this second time.
That is not the launch line-up! those are just a few featured games. The system is compatible with every downloadable PSP title, 2 touch panels, hd screen, 2 analogs, trophies, full psn experience, gps, wi-fi, 3g, sixaxis. That's why it's called the Nintendo Got Pwned!!
@atma998 And, your cons are based on opion... I can easily fit at least 2 NGPs in a single pocket... How you guys can't fit a single one on your pocket just baffles me.. On launch day, I'll be sure to get screen protectors, and some sort of protective shell to go around it, along with a wrist band. If I had done that with my PSP, it wouldn't look so damn worn out... But, at least it works.
Pros: better graphics, better connectivity features, new touch screens features and 2 analog sticks Cons: The console is too big in size (even more than original PSP!!), no retrocompatibility with PSP games, launch line-up of games very meh and almost the same kind of games the PSP had as diversity of genre goes and low battery life. Now the only thing we have to know is the price (which will probably be part of the cons when confirmed). No matter what, it's now safe to assume the 3DS will easily outsell PSP2 next gen.
okay those who're saying size doesn't matter and if you say so you're not a true gamer are either noobs, or fanboys. nuff said.
@teiaga "the initial software reveal looks like sony's going in the wrong direction. All of those games struggle to sell huge quantities on the ps3 so i doubt their gonna generate much ethusiasm outside of the few sony loyalists." I'm sorry but, are you serious? Sony has just shown the most amazing line up of games, such as Killzone, Resistance, Uncharted, and little big planet, just to name a few which have sold truck loads on the PS3. Not only that but they have announced a new CoD, which will sell trillions more, AND they showed that the NGP is capable of playing port PS3 games such as MGS4! I haven't been so excited about a consoles software line-up in a long time!
Techwise it sounds perfect but there are a few thing that bug me. Design wise it looks a bit awkward and slightly dated, it actually looks worse than the PSPgo which looked really cool. I dont kno why they didnt adopt the slide out asthetic found on the pspgo, maybe they jus want to re-release it in 2years or so with improved design. The anolog sticks look a bit too small and erect, the 3DS's looks more comfortable. if the control pad was on a seperate slide out panel they would have a lot more freedom in the size of the buttons which look tiny. A slide out panel would have allowed for a smaller compact size but as of right now it looks a bit too big and far from sleek. Small issue but if the image at the top is the new user interface it looks ugly. If there trying to create this image of this handheld being future sent than they need to change a few thing because right now i don see why anyone would look at this and say wow. Obviously on the software side we'll have 2 wait till E3 before we can judge butt the initial software reveal looks like sony's going in the wrong direction. All of those games struggle to sell huge quantities on the ps3 so i doubt their gonna generate much ethusiasm outside of the few sony loyalists. Sony should be more smart with their first party line up as opposed to jus porting what evers coming out for their home console. Little big planet yes, evrything else no. They need to coe out with new Ips which will help them sell this console It will be amazing for their business in japan if they could get a enhanced port of monster hunter tri around launch, and a multi-plat release of dragon quest X which currently is wii exclusive.
Not bad. I like the rear capacitive touchpad, that Little Deviants was interesting. So was the AR game Smart As in a way. And with the capacitive touch screen, it could be just like an iOS, nice way to compete there! So the announcement works, I'm interested. Need more information.
@Areym The 3DS is about the same size as a DSLite, which easily fits into my jeans pocket. The analog stick on the 3DS is covered up when the system is turned off. But the NGP's sticks are exposed and vulnerable. The 3DS also seems to be a bit smaller: the entire system is just a bit wider than the NGP's screen, and the sides add another couple of inches. On a handheld, a couple of inches is a big deal.
@Solid-Stark I proud of having innovative game play with great visuals and glass free 3D and AR elements. @welshbloke I liked this way more than i liked the original PSP and i may get one after paying for my 3DS (mostly cuz i will never get a PS3 and i love uncharted) but and it is a HUUGE BUT if this thing coasts anything more than 299,99 i will just get a better graphic card for my PC ^^ -for some reason i all ready having a vision of the future Kutaragui at E3 stage saying "U better get two jobs to get one of these for only 399,99 US DOLLARS"
I'm expected this baby will cost $350 - $400 when the price is finally announced. That probably won't happen until E3. Start saving your pennies now. By the time it's released the 3DS will have already sold well over 4 million units worldwide. I also want to know the battery life time for this NGP. Will gamers be able to turn in their UMD games for Flash Memory card versions of those games?
In my opinion it looks great. Only problem I see is what everyone else sees. The analog sticks would get in the way of stashing it somewhere like a pocket or small leather like case. If they would switch it back to nubs then it would be just right. Price wise I would like $300 - $350, but I wouldn't pay more than $400.
Lots of lovely detail but no price I will be shocked if they can deliver this at an affordable price point without seriously subsidising it.
I want! For all those hating, you are not true gamers. Real gamers would be proud they can have an HD console like experience on the go.
Once again, the thumbsticks are just looking too small. When are they going to realise that we need something sizeable to grip onto for precision motion?
Looks cool although the 3ds pushed sony to unveil the handheld before they wanted to.
3ds whas soo calles all powerfull, now psp2 totaly destroys the 3ds graphicly, now all the fanboys are saying its to big, get over it.
The size its a real problem for me, i can fit a DS lite or a 3DS (they are almost the same size) really tight on a my pocket and transport then in a very simply form on the front pocket of my jacket not the NGP has analog that may broken or loss its middle point if stucked for some time in the same position, also that screen (THAT IM LOVING IT SO FAR) has nothing protecting it from scratches that is also problem , i think that i would be happier with circle pads and slide model like the PSP GO, now about the price, 350 or more anyway i dont care that much cuz i not gonna get one im all ready pre-ordered my 3DS to play Kid Icarus in triii-diii
Several questions remain. What will be the launch line-up? How much will it cost? How long does the battery last? The second and third were my worries when I first saw these specs a few days ago.
of course we would complain about the size of it. i don't give a shit if the ps3 or 360 or wii are the size of a coffee table. well actually that woudl suck, but they are HOME cconsoles. the size don't matter. who cares if you have a ps3 or ps3 slim. but a handheld device i need to take with me. i need to put it in my pocket and still be comfortable. I don't want to have to take it out when i sit down, or have any restrictions. And look at pics, the PSP is much larger than the 3DS, and this NGP is larger still. Sorry but i'm not getting a handheld device to play at home. As so far only games have been really mentioned have been ports it seems. Why play them on this ngp if you are home and not just on the ps3? Portable gaming is meant for just that. it being portable, and going out with it. If it restricts me by being a hinderance in my pocket that is a HUGE turnoff. I've gone out some days with my ds and been gone for 8-10 hours and not once ended up using it. But it didn't bother me at all. It was just in my pocket like a phone.
You will be able to download PSP games from the PSN to all those saying no backwards compatibility.
I have one question for everyone complaining about the size of this NGP.... Can you fit a 3DS in your pocket? IS this any bigger then it's direct competitor, 3DS??
My god, people are seriously complaining about not being able to fit it into a pocket? Is that really what you're concerned about with a device that's meant to be played in your hands? This thing looks amazing, and I am really pumped for it now. I really didn't care about either 3DS or PSP2, but after seeing this announcement, I want a NGP (PSP2).
Congrats Sony! Now you have a portable too big and awkward to fit into a pocket that can't play any of its predecessor's games!
So Im assuming that the PSP1 games are not compatible with the NGP since its a totally different format. ALL 30 of my UMD including movies are useless on this device. Well that just sucks. It would been nice if they went with the slide version of the PSP2 that was all over the internet that was a very cool design but this one I was actually amaze at how high tech this came out. Im very interested in getting one but want to wait to hear out about backward compatibility.
Very cool. I love the rear touch panel, right blunty51, it's all from behind the screen, so finger free. (Great idea). Does the 3DS have gyro? Dual sticks is cool but probably dual-numb would've been more compact, we'll just have to wait and see. PS3-ish graphics is unbelievable. I wonder how they'll pull this off without having a horrible battery life and exaggerated price point. The battle is on!
The main problem with this is obvious: it's launching at least eight months after the 3DS. If the 3DS is immediately successful out of the gate then this sucker could go down. Let's face it, with all the iDevices out there now the market can probably only support one expensive gaming portable...
Looks pretty sweet, but I can't help wondering: Won't the analog sticks be a little annoying when you carry it around in your pocket? Hmm...
I wonder what the price of this thing is? Can you say 599 US Dollars all over again?
i guess this is just a post of complaints. no need to praise the obvious WOW to it. so here are worries/complaints 1. Looks big, can this fit in my pocket or will it be too bulky? 2. Speaking of pockets, how do the dual analog stick handle being in my pocket. will they get worn down break adn so on from being possibly pushed in directions constantly 3. What's the price, this sounds like it could be like $399 range.
Oh I absolutely love the design. So slick and dual analogs are a nice touch. Still need to see how all the features will be incorporated and here so game announcements but looking pretty nice now. I'm still going to pick up a 3DS, but I am interested in this for now (as I was never interested in PSP1). Mainly waiting for Sony to show off the "wow factor" of the product whether it be using one of the features announced or graphical capabilities (although doubtful the latter will be a wow factor for me. Can't wait for E3.
Gotta love the Nintendo fanboy defense force... Please people refrain from commenting bad spirited comments. I'm excited about both and I'll be getting both
This is truly a next generation portable device, and I want that thing! So many possibilitys! cant wait for it!
Damn, this is very impressive, especially the touch sensitive pad at the bottom, which i think essentially enables touch-screen gaming without your finger/stylus getting in the way. But the price/battery life is going to be a factor!
ah crap, I want it. I'm such a freaking sucker, but a dual analog handheld... I want. I don't even care about the graphics, just those lovely dual analog sticks there...
I think the release date it a little too far down the road (when they say this holiday, do they mean November-December 2011, or is the Japanese Holiday extended into February?). Other then that, it looks cool. A more traditional alternative to 3D, but with Wii-mote capabilities, a touch screen AND touch-pad, two thumb sticks and graphics that will match early 360/PS3 games....this actually looks kind of cool. Still I expect 3DS to outsell PSP2 just like the DS outsold PSP1, by a landslide. Nice to see trophies on handheld games, that would be a big factor to me if I were to get another handheld console.
I just hope the price is gonna be alright for me. Don't want me to rob a bank or wait for another year but this machine is definitely powerful.
Wow!! F'in awesome!! Ill pay up to 500 bills for it!!! awesome machine plus awesome game line up already!!!! 3ds what? lol this killed the small amount of anticipation i had for 3ds! The game line up is so much better than 3ds - the only game im interested on the 3ds is the new RE game which im sure will be ported to the psp2 with far better graphics. This is pure power. let the little kids play the 3ds and leave the psp2 for the rest of us! god bless SONY.
Wow, and I thought the 3DS was a high price point, this is going to be astronomical. Personally, I'm not sure exactly what this has as it's big selling point. The 3DS obviously has 3D as well as huge handheld franchises like Nintendogs and surely Pokemon at some time. The NGP has an impressive spec sheet, but will no doubt cost around the same price as an iPad and due to the poor performance of the PSP and it's lack of killer apps could well be purchased only by the hardcore and ignored by the masses.
I just read some of the comments left by some people. Nothing innovative!! Lol people are expecting a handheld that can teleport you around the world and travel you through time. Please the specs mentioned in this PSP 2 are amazing for a handheld consol. Why is it the people who are downplaying the PSP2 are the ones you see commenting about how great the 3DS is going to be Lol. Its funny how the world works isn't it. 3DS is innovative because it uses glassless 3D. PSP2 isn't innovative because it has a tonne of features thats been done before yet PS3 isn't innovative and its 3D compatible?????
OMG, how do they fit all that into one small handheld like that? GIMME NOW! I don't care if it's $400, I've got plenty of time to save.
Either it is goint cost a lot, or they will need to sell it at loss. Lol.... to those saying it would be costing as much or even less than the 3DS (a device already expenssive, by the way)
Two analog sticks, rear trackpad, motion sensing, better format, incredible screen and very good resolution, technical prowess, cameras, and nothing new huh? I've decided what my next gen handheld gonna be.
Judging by this long list of features and technical prowess I suspect this little cutie will be anything if not cheap ^^ Good thing then, that $onys timing is so splendid. Some countries still are in recession, others have just started to recuperate and then again others are seemingly going for the double dip.
It's nice to see that it retained it's PSP shape which is important. The features listed aren't necessarily huge innovations but just nice additions. Now let's wait and see about the price and the launch titles to really judge if this will be the handheld of 2011. Quite frankly with all the crap the 3DS is getting with people feeling nauseated etc I can't see it being the biggest success right off the bat. I know the option is there to turn it off, but you don't spend that much money on something to strip away it's main feature.. Here's hoping the PSP2 (NGP) will be successful.
So.. the only innovative thing is the rear-touchpad which is at least a good idea. I'm still wondering how it will be implemented in games and if it will be comfortable for your hands to use it.. I can't imagine using both the rear pad and the front touch screen at the same time.... Naw, it's not enough to get me. I'll stay on the DS/3DS boat...
Now, all I wonder about is price, this thing has the makings for Sony's next pricing folly...
Well-sounds good and expensive. I like big t...screens and i hope they won"t recycle so much old games as nintendos the 3DS. noone needs two new handhelds with old games.
Now all we need is what really matters: The games and the price when it launches. I for one would like to know how the battery life on this compares to the PSP and to the 3DS.
The hate psp/ngp has been getting on this site is just plain annoying. "too expensive", "Sony has learned nothing", "3ds is better", "nothing special" (yeah right) as if you guys would actually give it a chance.
@SecondWar its only a codename, not the actuall name. Like Project Natal is now Kinect
Well that sounds like a nice upgrade to the PSP (really should have kept the name as it is an upgrade ^^) though i'm affraid of the price.... and why the hell is there are rear trackpad when there is a touch screen??????? I barely get the concept of it in the first place too...
What a suck-ass name. The only good looking thing is theyre using game cartridges instead of discs, which always seemed like a bad idea for a portable.
Pessimism is running riot here. I think the table will turn in the portable races hopefully the production isn't as bad I think it is >.<
@sexc_abbas I will eat my pants if this goes on sale for less than 300USD.
Not so erhm.... portable (thanks to the size aaand the sticks) <I dare u to fit that in any pocket> Its funny how guys are saying "DAY ONE PURCHASE" damn we even know the price and did not saw any game in action yet hahHAHAHA But more funny will be the day in that Sony announces the price (no less than 350USD) and the fan boys will say "That's totally worth it"
What a powerhouse! Oh, and finally flash-based games, UMD would have been the biggest disappointment, imo. No info about batterie and price? Makes me believe there's one (or two) hitch(s). Anyone remember the mentioned overheating problems during developing NGP? Uh Sony does this pocket-PS3 really works?
The games will have a super AA because of the high resolution and the small screen size .. and its will get a full HD quality too.
The only thing that interests me about PSP2/NGP (next gen, ha!) is will PS3 get a FW update to allow it to play PSP games once PSP finally dies? Other than that PSP2 doesn't hold any more interest than PSP or DS did for me, i.e. none.
I think it's what was expected. Nothing new and exciting really, just a nice combination of features already available on other devices.
Well I'm definitley interested in this handheld now and I don't really like handhelds. Theres still a few questions unanswered though. I hope all the games we get for the PSP2 will not be ports of the PS3 versions because I'd rather play them on my PS3, How big is the harddrive? or does it even have a harddrive? and what price range are they hoping to go for. All that stuff sounds expensive
The hates here is sickening!! Someone says "history repeats again" well guess what psp2 will have cod, so you can rest assured america will go nuts with this awesome portable! Anywho, I'm liking it so far.
@kain_kusanagi ... Actually you can buy glasses-less 3d TVs in japan right now.. so you can get what the 3ds has
No one is saying anything about this but the picture of the Killzone game looks like it's in 3D. Will the NGP have 3D but need glasses?
Love the system, incredibly disappointed with the lack of ANY game announcements. Just "this stuff is coming." No names, no idea when. A bunch of tech demos... pretty scary for something that's going to be out in 10 months to have no specific games announced. Let's hope we see more at GDC and E3.
shit !! superb !!! day one purchase for me :) ... i really hope they will port all the great ps3 games to it.
really really nice :) now i want to see, if 3D is the point you would choose a handheld! i prefer this one, it has a lot more features like the 3ds !!! let's see :)
I highly doubt that Sony can launch their new handheld for under $300... this thing will retail for no less than $349.99 in the US, mark my words. Maybe Pachter was right... maybe it will be D.O.A.
Even with all these improvements it's still just a portable console. The 3DS has something you can't get anywhere else, glassesless 3D. The PSP2 or whatever they call it will still feel like a system with the same kind of games you'd rather play on your HDTV.
it looks bloody epic.... definalty day one purchase !!! and the 5" OLED "touchscreen" is going to be a big selling point of this console !! and about the price, it seems like its going to be around 250.00-280 at launch (hopefully)
Definitely has some promise. Let me be able to play COD online on the go and I might have to think about it. After I find out the price of course
Seems like they aren't changing their direction much. The 3DS on the other hand might be a bit more aimed at the core than the DS was, but not that much that the expanded audience get's abandoned. So this generation of handheld gaming starts like the last one did I'd say.
Wow.....You Might Even Be Able To Play This Contraption For Like 1/2 Hr. Before The Battery Dies. Thats If You Will Be Able To Afford It In The 1st Place. Rather Disappointing.
