Some Users Report Kinect Causing RROD Issues

by Harry Monogenis, posted on 31 December 2010 / 10,882 Views

According to several Xbox 360 users on the official Xbox Forums, Kinect has been causing problems for them. Most notably being the dreaded Red Ring of Dead (RROD).

Let's not pretend here. The Xbox 360 has without a doubt seen some pretty tough times over the past few years when it comes to hardware. The dreaded RROD was a fault known worldwide -- you didn't even need to know much about the Xbox 360 at the time, it was talked about a lot.

The RROD was mostly found on the older Xbox 360 models. The console's GPU would overheat, which caused it to automatically shut down. The next time the user turned it on, three red rings would be displayed on the "Rings of Life", located around the power button. Once a console has the dreaded Red Rings, it will no longer work.

Several complaints made via the official Xbox forums suggest that Kinect is causing older Xbox 360 models to get the Red Rings. There have actually been quite a few topics created on this matter, with nearly every single post being marked as "popular", receiving thousands of views, and hundreds of responses -- some even complaining about the same matter.

There isn't any solid proof that Kinect is to blame for these issues, the consoles might be dying of old age. You can find several of the complaints via the source.

Oh, and one more thing, AussieGecko. Looking back at the posts of this article, I NEVER responded or intended to respond to you. Faulty perception is... faulty. Maybe I was right all along. ;)

LivingMetal (on 04 January 2011)

@AussieGecko Yes, I have heard of the phrase "Pot Kettle Black." But I'm not Black. I happen to be Asian and South American. Chinese and Peruvian more specifically in fact. But seriously, I don't think you can find one unreasonable negative Xbox 360 comment not in jest from me. Some people just don't prefer the Xbox 360 as their console of choice with reasonable preferences. It's not my problem you cannot accept that. If you did, you would not find it so offensive that my comments are "against the 360" or however you want to perceive it.

AussieGecko (on 04 January 2011)

@livingmetal I didnt realised you replied on that one 2 me so I will reply on this one to you. You are not reasonable it is funny you talk about trolls coz mate that is what you seem to be against the 360. 360 fans are downplaying this because well honeslty one news report about it. If something is bad you get more then 1 report about it. It cant be as wide spread as people are trying to release Secondly name 1 positive 360 thread which you havent tried to downplay where you have posted in it. You have a ps3 preference to the point of it being further. (apparently we are not allowed to say fanboy) Ever heard of the phrase Pot Kettle Black? or the elaborated version of course.

@ damnl0ser You made the baseless accusation to begin with: "Do you seriously believe that all Xbox forum go'ers are fans of the 360? I would rest assured that there are plenty of BS fanboy accounts there just like every other forum on the internet." The principle here is that the problem is potentially real whether it's some or all users complaining about it. And I NEVER made a baseless accusation of you to begin with. I said: "I'm not making that accusation..." ...because your own logic can be used against you. I was only trying to make you see the other side of the coin. You've already made one accusation, and now you are accusing me of making an accusation. So I reiterate: "Grow up, children. Double standard and name-calling (and now adding false accusation) is a sign of immaturity. Truth." I'm sorry, man. I sorry you have to throw things out of context because you cannot maturely and successful counter argue my point.

AussieGecko (on 03 January 2011)

@gtcarro explain how 360 is fading in Europe, is only just behind in EMMEA where apparently that is a Sony stronghold. Japan is obvious, but not fading... more faded

gtcarro (on 03 January 2011)

Americans love Microsoft "high quality" products, and its because of them (and their HUGE sales), that 360 still is in the market (because in the rest of the word, 360 is starting to fade). If Americans love xbox360, than they also love RROD... so... Im happy for them! Congrats for this new... "achievement"

RyougaZell (on 02 January 2011)

Cool. I complain about the failure rate of both HD consoles and I'm a troll :)

tripleb2k (on 02 January 2011)

strange that an external piece of hardware is causing a problem with overheating. I'm not a computer tech but that doesn't sound right. RROD is an old problem and the fact it's still affecting old consoles shouldn't be a surprise. people maybe jumping to conclusions that its kinects fault when most know it isn't. it's a hardware problem that existed before so people shouldn't automatically connect the 2

damndl0ser (on 02 January 2011)

@livingbetal I am a troll now? You seriously need to look at my posting history. I own a 360 and a Ps3 and love both consoles. And if this BS were to be brought up about the PS3 I would defend it just as well. Your an instigator and very immature, esp... when you try make baseless accusations against me in particular. None of your comments hold water. Just like normal your anti 360 and it shows, anyone who has been here and read 3 or more of your posts know this....

LivingMetal (on 01 January 2011)

@ damndl0ser Exactly. If we should NOT believe the users on the Xbox forums because they might be potential PS3 trolls trying to start trouble, why should we believe YOU for favoring downplaying potential bad Xbox news? There are PS3 and Xbox 360 trolls alike. You want to be so quick to point out the PS3 trolls, then it's only fair for someone to make that conclusion about you as a Xbox 360 troll. I'm not making that accusation, but you sure are quick to do so about others. Grow up, children. Double standard and name-calling is a sign of immaturity. Truth.

bannedagain (on 01 January 2011)

Oh god, Evertime something new comes out we have to go over that the oldest models are RROD'ing. Look it's how many people? 2-3 people. WOW thats enough to write a article. Well lets have another article next month or so about RROD when 3 people complain about a new game that RROD there old xbox 360. It's done, stop these articles. We know the old ones had problems. There should be a rule of thumb that if it's old xbox's, it's not worthy of a article. Also will add to the erasing of comments. What a way to let people see what others have to say. Thats why I never comment in these article's in the gamrfeed. If the normal people who write article's in the threads bellow can handle a little criticism, so can you. SO let people's comments be heard.

ND3G (on 01 January 2011)

As soon as I read the part about "older consoles" I stopped caring. We all know the older consoles get the RROD. This is hardly news. Kinect doesn't cause RROD, the fact that MS is not allowed to use lead solder causes RROD.

hagelt18 (on 01 January 2011)

My comment got deleted but I wasn't even trolling... I just said no matter what your opinion is, the fact remains that shit is still shit. Whether you love or hate MS, the RROD is a shit deal no matter what the cause is. I like all three companies but that's not going to keep me from recognizing flaws. The Nintendo Entertainment System, for example had pretty extensive hardware issues. That's just how it was and no amount of passion or love could change that (consistently =P).

dunno001 (on 01 January 2011)

Why do articles like this always bring out the trolls? Anyway, I've deleted those comments, warned people for it, and banned the repeat offenders. As for the article, well... as has been said, it's the older 360s. While I can't say that every one of them is going to die, I can see that the increased system use coupled with the extra processing power needed for Kinect can increase the potential for RRODing a system.

Hephaestos (on 01 January 2011)

yeah... console do tend to be overused in end year holiday vacations... rrod sounds normal to expect

slowmo (on 01 January 2011)

We post this as news expecting to build the sites credibility, seriously??? Can we say anecdotal, this is ridiculous.

reidlosdog (on 01 January 2011)

@Author of the article Please make it known for everyone that this is specifically proned to the older models, which are already proned to it. No cases of this have been shown for the new slim models.

The_Leducs (on 01 January 2011)

Kinect uses processing power, so it makes the xbox work harder. Making it overheat due to the extra work and crappy quality manufacturing that was already known.

damndl0ser (on 01 January 2011)

@livingmetal Just like we should never believe anything negative about the PS3 from the "pathetic little 360 boys". Sigh..... grow up children.

BoneArk (on 01 January 2011)

A good and bad week for Microsoft. Good they sold over 50 million 360s. Bad that this is happening. I personally thought about getting a 360 at first, but, the RROD is the only reason I didn't get it. I love my Wii btw. :-)

LivingMetal (on 01 January 2011)

@ damnedl0ser Maybe we should NEVER believe anything negative from a "claimed" Xbox 360 user because it could all be a pathetic little PS3 fanboy, right? Well, you did say "Same shit different day..." and I agree with you especially when the article did say "older Xbox 360 models" which are prone to the RROD. "Shit" quality is "shit" quality. Glad we found some common ground.

NotStan (on 01 January 2011)

peace hunter, look at the post below my original post. A perfect example. Didnt even have to wade far into the comment box to find one. And yes I am laughing because I do find it amusing

damndl0ser (on 01 January 2011)

@thismeintiel Do you seriously believe that all Xbox forum go'ers are fans of the 360? I would rest assured that there are plenty of BS fanboy accounts there just like every other forum on the internet. No ones saying that the 360 didn't have RROD issues. All I am saying is that this is more BS being drudged up just when the 360 is starting to nudge ahead again. Same shit different day...

peace_lover (on 01 January 2011)

@NotStan are you sure you're laughing...?, because it doesn't sound like that... the old 360 failure rate indeed are so high.., so get over it, and buy the slim one if people still want to stick with it, it has nothing to do with PS3 "crowd" honestly...

Lostplanet22 (on 01 January 2011)

The E68 problem is a hard drive problem. just plug it in and out Had it a couple of weeks ago =p

DreSmartStb (on 01 January 2011)

it is possible to have had problems since I bought the kinect one is the E68 that appears whenever I turn the console with the kinect very strange...

NotStan (on 01 January 2011)

Gets me laughing every time, PS3 crowd pretending to be like "aww bless.. guess thats why sales are high now"(see below) or downright idiotic stories from some members like "yeah I know someone who has 10 xbox, that means there are only 5 million users right?". Really, I didnt know that journalists on here include reporting flamebait news in their job description. So this happened to some with severely old models, LETS BLOW THIS OUT OF PROPORTION" petty and funny at the same time.

this is such a sad thing to happen:-( probably explain increases in 360 sales...

Zlejedi (on 01 January 2011)

Probably the ony way kinect is causing those is through increased game time those consoles received due to new toy.

Nighthawk117 (on 01 January 2011)

All we are saying..... is give peace a chance.....All we are saying...... I won't get banned for the aforementioned statement, wiil I guys? Unlike my last statement?

welshbloke (on 01 January 2011)

Phew at last a chance for some Xbox bashing. With solid evidence obtained from the Xbox forums this can only be considered cast iron proof of well nothing but hell lets report it anyway.

thismeintiel (on 01 January 2011)

@ damndl0ser How is this fanboys trying to bash the 360 when the source is from 360 owners themselves on the Xbox forums? And RROD exists whether 360 is in 2nd or 3rd. Just can't wait for the 360 fans to start spouting what they spouted last time this happened. "Well, that's what you get for not getting the Elite." Of course, cause it should be ok for all companies to have cheaper models where it is acceptable for them to die much earlier. "Just go out and buy a new Slim." Yep, I'm sure that's exactly what MS wants you to do.

damndl0ser (on 01 January 2011)

Will this RROD Bullshit ever end? Jeez, some fanboys always looking to go negative and try and bash the 360 simply because its doing better than their console of choice...... @optoma , you do realize that a majority of electronics are designed here in the states. They are just shipped out to China to be made like everyone else does it. What an idiotic comment.

RyougaZell (on 01 January 2011)

@BlueRabbit17: A co-worker had 3 Xbox360 go RROD on him. He gave up and bought a PS3 several months ago. He got himself a slim unit because another co-worker of us has already has already passed through 2 PS3 and 3 Xbox as well... he's probably really unlucky because he's the only one whose PS3 have gone YLOD.

Roma (on 31 December 2010)

lol MS :P well we have two of them and one died and the other one seems too be dying as well it might happen the next time i turn it on :O :P the good thing though i have not played it for more than 6 months i hope it does not die when dead space 2 or portal 2 comes out

RyougaZell (on 31 December 2010)

Heh... this post goes great with the one saying Xbox360 has reached 50million units sold worldwide. I wonder how many of those have RROD and caused users to buy a 2nd or 3rd unit.

heruamon (on 31 December 2010)

LOL...get a Jasper or a new 360s and ur problem will be solved

poroporo (on 31 December 2010)

The older consoles were already prone to RRoD, it's only logical that an additional load on the cpu/gpu might cause a hardware failure, even if we're talking 5-10% extra processing power.

peace_lover (on 31 December 2010)

@Adobo : can't you see the source..??

piggychan (on 31 December 2010)

oh well good thing I migrated to a slim 360

Adobo (on 31 December 2010)

So many crazed sony fanboys and sony employees are already exploiting this news.

chuckyj1 (on 31 December 2010)

hmm.... Doubt it has any connection, because for the older models it uses it's own power supply. It also isn't any more taxing on the GPU than any other current games. I think the older models are just finishing themselves off. I have the xbox 360 S version. No worries here :)

think-man (on 31 December 2010)

And this is the very reason why I will only ever own a ps3, xbox is way to unreliable.

Juma009 (on 31 December 2010)

This happened to two of my friends, I swear over xmas weekend they got the Kinect all of a sudden their 360 RRODed.

binary solo (on 31 December 2010)

This would have been news if it was causing 360s consoles to RROD, but given the RROD is occurring in skus already known to be susceptible to RROD it's really a bit of a non-issue at this point. It will help sell more 360's because many RROD consoles will be out of the extended 3-year warranty, and at this point people will be more inclined to replace rather than repair.

Nsanity (on 31 December 2010)

Handful of users on a forum is hardly credible.

gekkokamen (on 31 December 2010)

Kinect or not , what is this news again? old X360s (meaning, not the slim one) still exist, millions of them, and each and every one of them will drop like flies, eventually. It's just a matter of usage.

oni-link (on 31 December 2010)

@illegalPaladin Well how do you expect them to catch up to the Wii hardware sales otherwise. C'mon they gotta do something ;)

blue7x7 (on 31 December 2010)

Doesn't this always happen when something popular comes out for the Xbox 360 it's always blamed for causing the RROD. Halo Reach, Modern Warfare 2, and pretty much every popular game has always been blamed for causing the 360 to RROD. Now Kinect is being blamed. Do people forget that the Xbox 360 is a faulty machine. I don't think anything external causes the Xbox 360 RROD but the Xbox 360 itself.

Toastrules (on 31 December 2010)

@IllegalPaladin Beat me to it >.<

NoobSlayer92 (on 31 December 2010)

*Gasp*

IllegalPaladin (on 31 December 2010)

Sony and Microsoft are in it together, they want everybody to upgrade to the new ones :P

Genera1MLD (on 31 December 2010)

here we go again, people over reacting to old news, the ONLY 360's affected are old pre 360 s models not the new 360 s models (basicly the old systems without the built in wifi reciever), the new 360 s cannot get the rrod as there are no red LED's around the power button, i would have thought after just 6 months people would have been aware of this.

MARCUSDJACKSON (on 31 December 2010)

never saw this coming. a friend of mine bought a new slim 360 last month and it gets RROD this month and now this? well anyway GEARS 3 will be out this fall, and it will be the best TPS ever made!

A203D (on 31 December 2010)

Do we know if this affects the newer 360 models or only the older ones. the article is ambigious to that extent.

A Bad Clown (on 31 December 2010)

It's probably just from the dust clogging on old systems, when people start them up after a while and if they haven't ever cleaned them the RROD is almost certain.

Wagram (on 31 December 2010)

I would like to say that i'm shocked.

Omac (on 31 December 2010)

May be a lot of people blowing off their old systems to try out Kinect. Could of already going to rrod even with out using Kinect.

ArnoldRimmer (on 31 December 2010)

Sounds reasonable! RROD is an overheating problem. And since Microsoft decided to remove that chip from the Kinect sensor and implement it's function in software, a 360 using Kinect has a significantly higher CPU usage than a 360 without Kinect, causing higher temperatures as well. So Kinect doesn't automatically cause RRODs, but the danger of getting a RROD is of course bigger when the 360 is using Kinect, especially when using a game that uses skeleton tracking. People who already own a 360s won't have to worry, because the 360s is unlikely to get a RROD. But people who have a pre-Jasper 360 model should be concerned.

CaptainHavok (on 31 December 2010)

@Hyruken Front page? There's a back page? Only one news page here, friend. It all goes in the same place.

Xbbjf9s (on 31 December 2010)

@grandia- to be fair the title does say "some". Anyway, don't the new models have the quote "kinect ready" on the boxes? I when I saw that I always wondered if there would be an issue with older models. Either way this is a wait and see kind of thing.

Grandia (on 31 December 2010)

When I klicked to your source then I saw 2 Threds with that issue. One of them has 75 Comments and the other has 10 Comments, furthermore most of the Comments in the Threads don't come fro usere who have Problems. I did not think that 10 People on the Internet count for 50 Million Xbox 360 Usere Worldwide.

Hyruken (on 31 December 2010)

Thought it was impossible for the 360 to RROD now as didn't MS change that system? So sounds a bit like bullshit to me. The fact this is on the front page as newss pretty laughable tbh.

MattAnderson (on 31 December 2010)

Its funny because RRoD used to be talked about all the time but nowadays you rarely here about it. I've never had to deal with it probably because my first 360 was an elite which had the falcon chipset, and I've since replaced that Xbox with one of the new S models which I believe has a very low failure rate.

PlaystaionGamer (on 31 December 2010)

INSERT SHOCKED FACE! nah i dont think it would be Kinect, its just there system would die just happens to be when they Brought Kinect

CaptainHavok (on 31 December 2010)

Hard to say if it's the case. It's not a power issue, though. The older 360's have to use external power for Kinect, only the newer ones have a special USB port with extra power for Kinect. That and games don't use power, the optical drive does. Either Microsoft or somebody smarter than me will have to verify if these RROD's are truly Kinect-related.

toastboy44562 (on 31 December 2010)

i dont think this is true...kinect uses far less power than let's say a game like halo or gears of war (I think).
