Weekly Analysis, 2 October 2010 - FIFA Soccer 11 Debuts - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 08 October 2010 / 5,437 Views

Overview – FIFA Soccer 11 leads software sales this week as it debuts with over 2 million in sales across five platforms. Five other games debuted in the top 50 as software sales gain week on week. However even with strong debuts hardware totals are down slightly this week. Continue to read for an in depth analysis of this week’s sales.

Hardware

Worldwide Hardware – Week on week sales as a whole are down slightly even though it was a strong week for game debuts. The PlayStation 3 decreased 12,000, the Xbox 360 18,000 and the DS 19,000. The PSP remains at the same level, while the Wii increases slightly up 6,000. However the increases in the Wii are not enough to offset the decreases in the PS3, X360 and DS.

Year on year sales are down for every system except the Xbox 360. The X360 the lowest selling system a year ago continues to see gains in sales since the release of the 360S model, up 19% or 29,000. The PlayStation 3 a year ago like the X360 now was seeing a boost in sales due to the release of the PS3 Slim. PS3 sales are down 45% or 123,000. The Wii a year ago had its first price drop from $249 to $199, which is the reason it is down 59% or 195,000. The DS is down 18% or 71,000 and the PSP is down 59% or 132,000.

Last 10 Weeks

Sales between the X360, PS3, and Wii are getting closer as the X360 and PS3 drop while the Wii increases. The gap between the three is currently 41,000. The bump from Halo: Reach (X360) continues to wear off as sales are down 100,000 from two weeks ago. The PS3 after two weeks of increases sees sales drop. The Wii after three weeks of decreases sees sales increase slightly. Compared with ten weeks ago the X360 is down 42,000, the PS3 is down 15,000 and the Wii is down 11,000.

Worldwide Software – Six games debuted in the top 50 with one game debuting on five different platforms. This week’s top debut is FIFA Soccer 11 as the PS3 version debuts at number 1 with sales of 1.25 million. The X360 version debuts at number 2 with sales of 868,000. The PS2 version debuts at number 23 with sales of 56,000. The Wii version debuts at number 25 with sales of 49,000. The PSP version is bringing up the rear at number 28 with sales of 38,000.

K-ON! Houkago Live!! for the PSP is the only other game to debut in the top 10 at number seven. The game sold 170,000 in its debut as the game is only available in Japan.

Eiyuu Densetsu: Zero no Kiseki for the PSP debuts at number 14. The game sold 77,000 in Japan as that is the only country the game is available.

Okamiden for the DS is also only available in Japan. The game debuts on the worldwide chart at number 15 with sales of 75,000.

Atelier Rorona: Alchemist of Arland for the PS3 debuts in America this week. The game debuts on the worldwide chart at number 37 with sales of 26,000.

Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team for the PSP is the last game to debut in the top 50. The game debuts at number 41 with sales of 23,000.

Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Halo: Reach (X360) at number three with sales of 419,000. The game passes the 5 million mark in just three weeks to become just the fifth game to accomplish this feat in three or less weeks.

At positions four through six are games in their second or third week on the market. At number four is Pokémon Black / White Version (DS) with sales of 378,000. At number five is Dead Rising 2 for the X360 with sales of 250,000 and at number six is Dead Rising 2 for the PS3 with sales of 207,000.

At positions eight through ten include two usual games. At number eight is F1 2010 for the PS3 with sales of 136,000. At number nine is Wii Sports with sales of 116,000 and rounding at the top ten is Wii Sports Resort with sales of 114,000.

Software

Week on week software sales are up for every platform except for the DS. The PS3 is up 82%, the Wii is up 6%, the X360 is up 27% and the PSP is up 22%. The DS is down 21%.

Year on year sales are up for the PS3 26% and up for the X360 27%. Down year on year are the Wii at 28%, the DS at 33% and the PSP at 4%.

@Wandamaximoff lol at your comment only youve overlooked a fatal flaw, the only place in the world where the 360 has any influence on its market share is North America, it has no influence in Europe and no influence in Japan and the sales in the EU and JAP are consistant with PS3 where as the 360 isnt consistant especially in Japan which by no coincidence is where pretty much 75% of MMO's and JRPG's come from. Now unless your blind you'll know as a gamer PS eyetoy was a flop, 360 live vision cam was a flop and move hasnt realy set the world on fire so dont get your hopes up for Kinect, the only real success story is the Wii however the novelty value has long since worn off hence sales of Wii falling, the best way forward is to just enjoy what youve got and what your getting rather than acting like a deranged fanboy trying to convince us all that going single format is the right choice, i dont think thats a good stratagy as most gamers enjoy a whole range of games on multiple formats ie is diablo 3 comming out on any console's or will halo ever grace the PS3 the simple answer is highly doubtfull, so it makes sence to have a 360, PS3, PC, Wii ect ect.

we can go on about sales figures all day for months on end but it doesnt change the fact that sticking to a single format seriously restricts our gaming experience's so id prefer to experience a huge range of games regardless of fanboy critics.

Hah, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock's terrible start amuses me. 80k on the PS3, 110k on the 360 first week, worldwide? Maybe they might have to, gasp and horror, innovate for the next one! I know, crazy, right?

"Ungo PS3

Go Wii!"

This is funny comming from a person so concerned with bannable situations. One more moralist following the style "do what I said, don't do what I do".

And the more interesting thing is that Wii is not going much far anymore. Its time has passed (the days where Nintendo was the owner of the top 20). Now, it's the turn of X360 and PS3 (not even 1 Wii game in the top 10 of this week). But you can say "go Wii" since Wii is actually going somewhere (it's going down). The "ungo PS3" also makes some sense in this perspective once it is doing the turnaround (and it's eating Wii market share with Move).

John Cleese explains why the game that people in America call soccer should be named football;

They just call it soccer, because it's not one of their sports being the most popular one on this planet. Americans ... hahaha
