Halo 3 sells 10 million copies worldwide - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 13 August 2009 / 30,130 Views

Halo 3 is the first Xbox title (on either the original or 360) to break 10 million copies worldwide as of the 8th August 2009 according to VGChartz research. This makes the title only the 35th game ever to reach this mark, the full list can be found here.

After launching to an astonishing 3.8 million copies in it's first week (a record which still stands) and with an average critic score of 9.6, long-term success for Halo 3 was assured. Nearly two years after launch, the game is still a regular in the worldwide weekly top 30 selling around 30,000 copies per week. In fact, the only reason why Halo 3 is likely to drop out of the top 30 in the coming months is due to the release of Halo 3: ODST - a side quest focusing on the Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. Preorders for that title are already well over a million in the US alone so it looks like Bungie will have another huge hit on their hands.

http://blogs.theage.com.au/entertainment/halo-3.jpg

Halo: Combat Evolved started the series back in 2001 where it launched alongside the original Xbox console and became a suprise smash hit - selling consistently until the launch of Halo 2 on the way to nearly 6.5 million units in total. The Halo franchise now stands at nearly 30 million total sales (including PC versions, add-ons, map packs, Halo Wars). The three main Halo games have sold nearly 25 million copies combined with each outselling the previous title (all figures in millions):

Japan Americas Others Worldwide
Halo 3 Xbox 360 0.12 7.24 2.64 10.00
Halo 2 Xbox 0.11 6.65 1.67 8.43
Halo: Combat Evolved Xbox 0.10 4.91 1.42 6.43

Halo 3 also takes the title as highest-selling single-platform HD game (i.e on Xbox360 or PS3 or both) this gen, although when adding Xbox 360 and PS3 then Grand Theft Auto IV and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare come out on top:

1
Grand Theft Auto IV Xbox360 / PS3 12.90
2 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Xbox360 / PS3 12.13
3 Halo 3 Xbox360 10.00
4 Call of Duty: World at War Xbox360 / PS3 9.18
5 Assassin's Creed Xbox360 / PS3 7.95
6 Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Xbox360 / PS3 6.18
7 Gears of War Xbox360 5.90
8 Gears of War 2 Xbox360 5.09
9 Resident Evil 5 Xbox360 / PS3 4.64
10 FIFA Soccer 09 Xbox360 / PS3 4.25
11 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3 4.13
12 Forza Motorsport 2 Xbox360 3.99
13 Madden NFL 09 Xbox360 / PS3 3.93
14 Fallout 3 Xbox360 / PS3 3.90
15 The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Xbox360 / PS3 3.71

So how far can Halo 3 go? As stated above, we feel that the upcoming release of ODST will slow Halo 3 sales, but another 1-2 million is still realistic, especially with budget releases and bundles. We expect ODST to sell well initially but ultimately end up at around half of Halo 3's total. Halo Reach on the other hand could be the next Halo game to challenge for ten million copies, especially being the last Halo title from Bungie. Where the series goes from there, and how many more Halo Wars style spinoffs we see is something only Microsoft knows at this point.

Halo 3 is currently available with Fable II in the "Games of the year" Xbox360 Elite hardware bundle. Halo 3: ODST launches on September 22nd and you can read the exclusive VGChartz interview with the development team here.

Game was awesome and ODST and Reach are going to sell like crazy. GT5 isn't going to sell 10 million on the PS3. People are nuts if they actually believe that. Even FF XIII isn't going to sell 10 million.

AGREED! Congrats Bungie & Microsoft for the landmark acheivement.

Congrats to one of the best games this generation :D.

And yes there is some GT5 trolling, however I always notice in pro-GT5 threads, there ends up being either Mario Kart trolling or Forza 3 trolling.

Congrats to Bungie, but I was wondering what other console games have done 10 million in under 100 weeks? It seems like that is the platinum standard in terms of software sales. Probably a very "elite" group of games...

A thoroughly well deserved achievement. This is an iconic game synonymous with the Xbox brand. Interesting to see that it was the massive increase in Others territories (vs H2 and H:CE) that really got Halo 3 there.

I really dont wanna start a thread about Gt5 because people will turn it to a troll and flambait thread. I dont have the nerves aswell to argue of how much it will sell.

@Tbone

If you want to argue about GT5 sales why don't you start a 132th thread on that topic? You will then realize that most of people here think like me.

This is epic, 10 million is big sales! Big victory for MS and the Halo franchise.

This thread is not about GT5 btw.

  1. Congratz to Halo 3.
  2. I agree with heruamon, i hope Gt5 releases this year so it all can be settled.

  3. Atma if the rumors are true that ps3 will get a price cut of 100 euros in Europe than Gt5 will sell 5 million only in Europe.

@ atma988

I said anything about 10 millions? I just said that GT5 will definitely become one of the best selling single-console titles this gen. Like Halo 3. 10M isn't necessary for it, but I sure that GT5 will sell 7-9M units and it will be very good.

Has anyone heard anything solid about the Halo movie. Lots of rumours about Steven Spielberg but nothing firm. Just did an interview with the guy behind Operation Chastity, the UK Halo fan film, and that looks pretty amazing: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2009-08/13/halo-fan-seeks-%C2%A330,000-for-ultimate-fan-film.aspx

Congratulations to Halo. Back in 2007, one of the big debates was which game would sell more, Halo 3 or Mario Galaxy. I thought that Mario Galaxy would ultimately sell more, but I was wrong. (It was Wii Fit/Mario Kart that took off instead.)

mrstickball, you were right: Halo 3 had the better long-term sales!

--OkeyDokey-- says:

It's not just marketing that sells a game. Sony marketed the hell out of Resistance 2, InFamous and Killzone 2 and none of these games will ever sell 10 million copies. They are all great games, just like Halo 3, they just aren't as popular. Even Uncharted was marketed very well and neither the original or it's sequel will sell 10 million. Uncharted is a pretty popular game.

TheConduit says:
First Xbox game to sell 10million

and probable the last

I don't it. Halo: Reach will probably surpass it. The only game on the PS3 that has a chance to break 10 million is FF XIII. GT5 won't

  • 0
XanderZane (on 13 August 2009)

atma998 says:
LOL at people who thinks GT5 will reach 10 mil

Congratz to Halo 3! btw

GT5 won't reach 10 million. The GT5 Prologue didn't sell that great and didn't even score well overall. GT5 should sell 4-5 million with most of the sales coming out of Japan and Europe. Doesn't even look like the GT5 will ever make it out this year to go head to head with Forza 3.

This is what happens when a talented developer is married with great publishing support.

To those that think Bungie is looking elsewhere for their future games to be published, look at the above numbers and again, rinse and repeat.

Great article. It will be interesting to see how many more exclusive HD games, if any, can hit the 10 million mark this gen. Of the ones announced so far, I think only GT5 and Halo Reach have a shot.

  • 0
nightsurge (on 13 August 2009)

@OkeyDokey:

6.43 million on a 20 million userbase isn't that big?! Then Halo 2 reached 8.43 million on a 25 million userbase.

Seems like Halo: CE was "bigger" than any PS3 or 360 exclusive (except for Halo 3) so far.

  • 0
wiifan75 (on 13 August 2009)

As a Ninty fan, I need to start a coalition to get gamers out there to start buying up new copies of Mario Kart 64. It lost 35th spot. It's just gonna keep moving down that chart over the years. LOL Can't believe GoldenEye 007 is only 43rd.

  • 0
disolitude (on 13 August 2009)

To anyone saying "oh marketing budget sold this game"... that argument doesn't hold much water.

If the game sold 10 million in the first 6 months and then stopped selling, that would be hype. However the game keeps on selling, meaning word of mouth, people playing it at freinds houses...etc.

Its an amazing game, just admit it or don't bother posting here.

"Halo 3 sales but another 1-2 million in still realistic"
is this a typo?

Halo 3 really deserves it. Where did you get the information "Halo ODST preorders are > 1 million already in US alone" from? Is it your data or was there an official annnouncement?

And NO, it isn't just the marketing that made Halo a success. It is the game itself, that made it a success.
