The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

 

Switch Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 243,374 – Switch

Total Lead: 1,135,108 – Switch

Switch Total Sales: 6,078,757

DS Total Sales: 4,943,649

August 2017 is the 6th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 243,374 units. After two months the Switch is currently ahead of the DS by 1.14 million units.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. The Switch has sold 6.08 million units, while the DS sold 4.94 million units during the same timeframe.

Just wait till moms learn about that Brain Age game heh... it was about the most effective software I've seen for selling to non-gamers since Tetris on the Gameboy.

The DS Lite released 19 months after the original DS in the US (in Japan it was only 15 months).

Maybe the PSP would be a better comparison?

The DS is the highest selling handheld device. Thus why the purpose of this article is to compare the Switch with the highest selling handheld to compare the launch sales. The graph indicates that the Switch is outpacing the highest selling handheld device.

The PSP comparison would literally provide no meritable information, only comparing the switch with a low-selling product.
