E3 2011 Eyes-On: Medieval Moves: Deadmund's Quest - Preview

Sure it wasn’t the most exciting thing at Sony’s E3 conference, but there were some genuinely interesting things shown during Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest’s trailer.  I got a chance to watch the game being played for a while and get a bit more info on the title.

Deadmund’s Quest is by the same studio that made Sports Champions for Playstation Move and it aims to take all of the motion mechanics of the original game and turn it into a full action adventure title.  You play as Prince Edmund whose kingdom is under attack by a skeleton army with a wizard/mage/magical jerk at the helm who turns Edmund and all of his friends into skeletons as well.  Thus Edmund becomes Deadmund and our tail of action and perhaps adventure begins.

The whole idea of the game was to make something using only one to one motion controls.  I was told you can use just one move controller if you like but that the game gets even better with two similar to Sports Champions.  Beyond that what I saw was the same move set from the trailer but in a training area so that we uncoordinated press didn’t have to face against anything more threatening than an inanimate target.  From what I watched the movements seemed to match the intended purpose pretty well.

According to the Sony representative the game will feature a separate arcade mode to give gamers more to do after the story is done as well as cooperative and competitive multiplayer for two players online or local.  After some gentle prodding with some hard hitting journalist questions (go me!) he also told me that there will be boss fights in the final version and that those worried about how easy the game seemed during the conference should know that the difficulty was set to the lowest possible.  Like Sports Champions before it Deadmund’s Quest will feature a plethora of difficulty levels going from the ridiculously easy to the painfully hard.

Only time will tell if this will turn into a patched together monster made from spare motion control mechanics or if it’ll show what the Move is all about.  We’ll just have to wait and see when the game releases in fall 2011.
