3DS vs DS – VGChartz Gap Charts – May 2014 Update

3DS Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 1,262,824 - DS

Gap change over last 12 months: 16,323,647 - DS

Total Lead: 24,402,352 – DS

3DS Total Sales: 43,088,602

DS Total Sales: 67,490,954

In the latest month of sales for the 3DS, the gap grew 1,262,824 units in favor of its predecessor the DS.  The DS currently leads by 24,402,352 in the first 40 months. Over the last 12 months the DS has gained 16,323,647 units on the 3DS. The gap is expected to continue to grow in favor of the DS.

An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The DS first launched in November 2004, while the 3DS launched in February 2011. The 3DS has sold 43,088,602 units in the first 36 months, and the DS 67,490,954 units.

So the gap has doubled from 12m to 24m in just five moths. If this continues it won't be long before the gap will be larger than the 3ds's total sales...

It might never sell like the DS, but it still continues to be the portable console of the generation. I imagine Smash and Pokemon and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate in Japan get some sales up there. Least it's not flopping.

The DS is the most successful gaming system of all time. The 3DS sales are good, but will never reach DS levels.
