Weekly Sales Analysis, 18 December 2010 - Wii, DS, X360 1 Mil+ - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 24 December 2010 / 7,596 ViewsOverview – It was a light week for debuts with only two games debuting in the top 50, but neither of them is in the top 30. Having said that total software sales year on year are up for every platform, except for the DS. One game sold over 1 million, the top 14 sold over 500,000 and the top 56 sold over 100,000. Hardware has increased for every platform week on week and should increase again next week, the biggest week of the year for sales. Three platforms, the Wii, DS, and Xbox 360 have sold over 1 million units, with a chance of four platforms selling over 1 million next week. Total DS sales to date are currently just under 143 million. The Wii passes the 82 million mark. Xbox 360 sales will reach 50 million next week, as the PlayStation 3 will also hit a milestone, 45 million units sold.

Worldwide Hardware – Week on week sales have increased across the board, as three platforms sold more than 1 million units. The Wii is this week’s top platform with sales of 1.7 million, an increase of 145,000 (9%). The DS is the second bestselling platform and the bestselling handheld with sales of 1.5 million, an increase of 173,000 (13%). The Xbox 360 is the third platform to sell 1 million or more units with sales of 1 million, an increase of 318,000 (46%). This is the biggest increase this week. The PlayStation 3 with the second biggest increase this week, is up 183,000 (28%) for sales of 831,000. The PSP, last but not least, has sales increase 65,000 (14%) to 517,000.
Year on year sales are up for the Xbox 360 and are down for every other platform, but there are no significant drops, greater than 20%. The Xbox 360 is up significantly with an increase of 323,000 (48%). The PSP has the smallest drop year on year, down 41,000 (-7%). The Wii has the second smallest drop, down 100,000 (-6%). The PlayStation 3 is down 188,000 (-18%) and the DS with the biggest drop is down 268,000 (-15%).

The last ten weeks of sales for Home Consoles remain interesting as sales are up between three and 12 times compared with ten weeks ago. The Wii is up 12 fold with the X360 up six fold and the PS3 up three and a half fold. The Wii has been in first for five straight weeks, the X360 in second for five straight weeks and the PS3 in third for seven straight weeks.
Worldwide Software – Two games debuted in the top 50 this week, but neither of them was in the top 30. This week’s top debut is Inazuma Eleven 3: Sekai e no Chousen!! The Ogre (DS) is at number 35 with sales of 196,000. The game debuted in Japan and has no plans of being launched anywhere else in the world.
The other debut in the top 50 is Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3 (PS3) at number 37 with sales of 186,000. The game debuted in Japan with a release date to be announced in America and EMEAA.
Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Wii Sports at number one with sales of 1.5 million as the game passes the 72 million mark. New Super Mario Bros. Wii jumps to number two with sales of 846,000. Kinect Adventures! (X360) remains at number three with sales of 754,000 as sales cross the 4 million mark. Wii Sports Resort is at number four with sales of 747,000. Just Dance 2 (Wii) is at number five with sales of 720,000, passing the 3 million mark.
Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) is at number six with sales of 689,000 as the game passes the 2 million mark. Super Mario All-Stars: Limited Edition (Wii) jumps into the top 10 at number seven with sales of 647,000 as the game passes the 1 million mark. The reason for this jump in sales is that the game launched in America this week. Call of Duty: Black Ops (X360) is at number eight with sales of 621,000. Wii Fit Plus is at number nine with sales of 595,000. Gran Turismo 5 (PS3) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 574,000 as sales reach the 4 million mark.

Week on week software totals are up for every platform. The Wii sees the greatest gain up an impressive 2.6 million (21%) to 15 million games sold. Why no mention at all that Wii was discounted by nearly all major chain retailers in US this week? You would have had to be a fool not to get out and pick up a Wii this week if it was on your list of items to purchase. Not to mention the additional impulse purchase because of $50 to $75 gift cards available. Maybe that effected sales just a bit?
HOW HAS THE DS HAD THE BIGGEST DROP (15%) WHEN THE PS3 HAS 18% (3% MORE THAN THE DS) ???

just 1 bit of confusion, isnt kinect adventures bundled with the kinect sensor and thats sold over 5 million so how has kinect adventures only sold 4 million ???? just thought id point that out.
why is everyone going on about a price cut to the 360, it got 1 earlier this year.
the 360 s replaced the elite and the super elite at the same time, the super elite in the uk cost 250 pounds "the super elite had a 250gb hdd" also the new arcade is 10 pounds cheaper than the old arcade that cost 160 pounds from september 2009 after microsoft increased the price from 130 pounds (some crap about the euro currency exchange with the dollar).
the ps3 on the other hand may have some real nice exclusive titles lined up next year but so has microsoft and as of the past 5 years id say its completly clear sony is fighting a loosing battle going by the recent WW sales figures the ps3 is now 5 million behind the 360 where as 6 weeks ago the gap was only 4 million.
time to face the music GT5 just failed to deliver as the ps3's killer app that mostly all ps3 fans were hopping do rule xmass sales but kinect stole the show.
@jkudlacz, don't rule out the Kinect effect. This will give the Xbox 360 long legs... just wait for it. People that use it love it, now a lot of people get to use it at once...
I think it is time for PS3 to pick up. Wii will start dropping as well as XBOX right after the holidays. I think PS3 has the best selection of exclusive games in 2011 and they are spread out evenly over next 12 months.

No 360 price cut. If anything people are spending MORE on the platform than ever. And sales ate still up. Live is more. Kinect is selling in the bundles. And the base console hasn't dropped in price. I echo the comment that considering japan is a virtual zero it's astounding the ww numbers.
wow, love the kinec effects
@Voltaire, the 360 has had a redesign but not a price cut, it didn't even get a price cut last year, just offered elite for the same price as pro was previously.
So these numbers are impressive indeed, just wait until the price cut comes.
Wondering if numbers will really be up next week, because Xmas day is saturday so there's effectively only a 6 day selling week. Last year 26th was Saturday, which means big shopping spreee the day after Xmas so pumping up the sales, everything went up except for PS3. But this year could be different, flat to slightly down across the board maybe.
@Voltaire
Sarcasm.
Impressive numbers for 360, Wii and DS again
Its on like Donkey Kong
Considering how dead 360 is in Japan, reaching 1 mil. WW is super impressive.
I am surprised to see how bad the 360 was doing last year compared the the PS3. I was thinking the PS3 wasn't doing so great this holiday season, but it is doing quite a bit better than the 360 was doing compared to the PS3 last year.
Or am I missing something?
Next week, Wii should be close to 1.8M, DS 1.6M, PS3 close to 1M, PSP around 550,000 and 360 over 1M again.
@Voltaire
And Kinect you cant forget about that either
Overall though great week for all hardware and to think that next week is gonna be bigger =O
Correction: the Wii is in first for 5 straight weeks and the Xbox 360 in second for 5 week as well.
@kynes
What is this, 2007?
The 360 numbers are truely impressive. Its amazing what a redesign and a price cut and do.
Wii is down 100K, looks like wii will be doing about 2.1M YoY, not bad considering I hoped it wont do worse than 4M.
It's clear that the wii users don't buy games.
Good numbers.
