A Minecraft Movie Surpasses $700 Million at the Global Box Office - News

A Minecraft Movie in its opening weekend shattered expectations earning over $300 million and topped $550 million at the global box office through two weekends.

Through three weekends the movie has surpassed $700 million at the global box office for a current total of $717.83 million.

A Minecraft Movie is now the second highest grossing video game based movie of all time trailing only The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $1.36 billion.

A Minecraft Movie had a production budget of $150 million before you add marketing costs. A movie usually needs to earn 2-2.5 times the production budget to break even at the box office.

Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all-time with over 300 million units sold as of October 2023.

Don't think it has been confirmed but as a similar case scenario, Mattel received 5% of box office gross from the Barbie film, they also had a big boost to merchandise sales though thanks to the film. Microsoft is probably looking at about ~5% then because I doubt they have a bigger % than Mattel.

WB probably takes the vast marjority of the profits, that don't go to the movie theaters. Like Ryuu96 said its probably in the single digits of %'s or a fixed sum, they agreed on early on.

I think Microsoft made a good financial decision buying Mojang... 2.5~ Billion smacko's, 9 years ago.

Since they released...

Minecraft Dungeons.
Minecraft Earth.
Minecraft Legends.
And a movie.

Minecraft sales continued from 54~ Million in 2014 to 350+ Million in 2025.

And endless amounts of toys and tie-in media.

It will be interesting to see if the movie has the legs to beat Mario's 1.34~ Billion Box Office haul.
