The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006 in North America and Japan and in March 2007 in Europe. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

Sometimes I forget just how rough the first half of the PS3's life was. It ended up selling quite well in the end though.

PS5 has a tough battle here. Only 21mil ahead of PS3...gonna be really close. /s

edit: I just realized something. The PS3 sold nearly (edit) <20mil> after November 2012...this is (edit) <more than> what the Wii U was able to push despite PS4 having released in 2013, and the Wii U literally being an entirely new console lol. Rough times.

edit 2: are the downvotes bc my math was off or bc I’m acknowledging the truth that PS5 is only ahead by 21mil (which means PS3 will probably win)? /s

You are wrong, PS3 sold close to 20M after november 2012 .. It was at almost 70M in the end of november 2012.

my bad, you’re right. Math got screwed up in my head…though post-Nov2012 PS3 outselling Wii U is still pretty crazy. Thank you for the correction, just fixed it.
