The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Wii.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the Nintendo Wii launched in November 2006. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

When this chart started it was interesting, but due to stock i think we'll have to wait a couple of years before enjoying this again.

Considering how long this hardware drought is lasting (and how much more seems to be going to last), I wonder if Sony will continue with the PS5 or if they will release the PS6 once it ends.

I dare say this is not just stock issues. There's a new dynamic, especially when Xbox outsells ps in Japan. Too many platforms and sony is tarnished.

The opening graph only shows ONE line in orange.
That line is NOT tracking the Wii's lead.
It should either be reconstructed to show the Wii's lead, or it should be relabled.

Kind of sad that Sony finally released their best console and they can't make any of them. It should be the top selling. Everything is great except for the design and a PS5 slim would sell like hotcakes.

At least their profit is extreme. I didn't realize that Sony made the most profit off the PS1. The PS2 was then slightly less and then the PS3 was never-ending losses. PS4 was a good recovery and the PS5 is making Sony the most money (not sure why, the $500 price?).

The Xbox might outsell the PS5 in total units for the first time next month. That's a first since the 360 era.

Why should it not be $500? It was sold at a loss at launch. The losses were offset by their subscription service and high digital sales which make more profit than physical sales.
This is the first time Playstation didn't have a year where they lost money overall during a console transition thanks to that.
The PS4 so far was by far the most profitable Playstation console, several times more so than the PS1 and PS2.
