Weekly Sales Analysis, 17 September 2011 - Dragon Quest 25 Years - News

Overview

The 3DS remains above 200,000; however the PlayStation 3 falls below that mark this week as sales are  40,000 (32%) above where they were before the price cut. Even with the 3DS this year, hardware sales are down by a quarter compared to last year. Software sales are down both week on week and year on year. There are four debuts in the top 40, which is down from seven last week. The 25 year anniversary of Dragon Quest is being celebrated with the release of Dragon Quest 25 Shuunen Kinin: Famicom & Super Famicom Dragon Quest I-II-III (Wii) in Japan. Software milestones this week: Dead Island (X360) crosses the half a million mark; Wii Sports Resort passes the 28 million mark; and Call of Duty: Black Ops (X360) reaches the 13 million mark. Five games sold over 100,000, down from seven last week, and the top 13 sold over 50,000, down from 16 last week.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware

Week on week sales are down for every platform except for the Wii. The 3DS is at the top with sales of 213,000, which is down only 2,000 (-1%). PlayStation 3 sales are down 44,000 (-21%) to 164,000 units sold. The Xbox 360 is down 4,000 (-3%) to 118,000. The DS is down 3,000 (-3%) week on week, as it sold 84,000 units this week. The PSP sold 73,000 units, which is down 5,000 (-6%). Total week on week sales are down 56,000 (-7%) to 760,000.

Year on year sales are down for every platform. The PlayStation 3 is down 36,000 (-18%), the Wii is down 40,000 (-29%), and the Xbox 360 is down a massive 146,000 (-55%) due to Halo: Reach launching one year ago. The PSP is down 52,000 (-42%) and the DS is down a massive 207,000 (-71%) partly due to Pokémon: Black / White also launching one year ago. Total year on year sales are down 260,000 (-25%).

Hardware Home Consoles

For this week the gap between the three home consoles has shrunk due to the initial surge from the PlayStation 3 price cut wearing off. The PlayStation 3 has a 43 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 31 percent market share; and the Wii has a 26 percent market share. The PlayStation 3 has been in sole position of first for the last eleven weeks. The gap between the Xbox 360 and Wii has shrunk slightly: however the Xbox 360 is still in second for a fourth straight week. Compared with ten weeks ago PlayStation 3 sales are up, and Wii and Xbox 360 sales are down.

Hardware Handhelds

3DS remains well ahead of the DS and PSP outselling both of them combined for sixth straight week. The gap between the DS and PSP remains small at just 11,000 this week compared to 49,000 the week of July 9. The DS has a 54 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the PSP a 46 percent. Compared with ten weeks ago 3DS sales are up and the DS and PSP sales are down.

Worldwide Software

Four games debuted in the top 40 this week, down from seven last week. Dragon Quest 25 Shuunen Kinin: Famicom & Super Famicom Dragon Quest I-II-III (Wii), the 25 year anniversary collection, debuted at the top this week with sales of 266,000. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.

God of War: Origins Collection (PS3) debuted at number 11 with sales of 59,000. The game launched in the Americas and EMEAA and will launch in Japan on October 6.

The Gunstringer (X360) debuted at number 37 with sales of 17,000. The game launched in the Americas and EMEAA and will launch in Japan on October 6.

BIT.TRIP SAGA (3DS) debuted at number 40 with sales of 15,000. The game launched in the Americas, with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Dead Island (X360) at number two with sales of 198,000. Dead Island (X360) is at number three with sales of 173,000. NHL 12 (X360) is at number four with sales of 113,000. Resistance 3 (PS3) is at number five with sales of 101,000.

Madden NFL 12 (X360) is at number six with sales of 87,000. Madden NFL 12 (PS3) is at number seven with sales of 75,000.  NFL 12 (PS3) is at number eight with sales of 72,000. Mario Kart Wii is at number nine with sales of 65,000. Wii Sports Resort rounds out the top 10 with sales of 64,000.

Software

Week on week software totals are up for the Wii and DS and down for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PSP and 3DS. The PlayStation 3 takes the top spot this week with 1.63 million games sold, a decrease of 808,000 (-33%). The Wii sold 1.40 million games, an increase of 228,000 (19%). Xbox 360 software sales are down 285,000 (-17%) to 1.36 million. The DS sold 723,000 games, which is up just 8,000 (1%). PSP game sales are down to 266,000 games sold, a decrease of 33,000 (-11%). The 3DS sold 244,000 games, a decrease of 48,000 (-16%). Total combined software is down week on week to 5.63 million games sold a decrease of 937,000 (-14%).

Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3 and down for every other platform. The PlayStation 3 is up 309 (23%), the Wii is down 248,000 (-15%) and the Xbox 360 is down a massive 3.72 million (-73%). The DS is down a massive 3.18 million (-81%) and the PSP is also down a massive 1.06 million (-80%). Total combined software is down 7.65 million (-58%) games sold year on year.

Software Home Consoles

For this week the gap between the three home consoles software sales has shrunk. The PlayStation 3 has a 37 percent market share, the Wii with a 32 percent, and the Xbox 360 with a 31 percent. PlayStation 3 software sales are at the top for a fourth week. The Wii isn’t in last for the first time in a month. Next week the Xbox 360 is going to have a strong lead, due to the release of Gears of War 3. Compared to ten weeks ago all three platforms software sales are up.

Software Handhelds

The DS remains at the top as the gap between it and the PSP grow, as the DS has a 73 percent market share and the PSP has a 27 percent market share. 3DS software sales are right behind the PSP. Compared to ten weeks ago the 3DS is up and the DS and PSP are down.

Reach caused 360 to jump from 159K to 264K. Or 66%. Gears 3 pre-orders are pretty much at Reach levels. I wonder if Gears can achieve at least a 50% spike, so 118K --> ~180K. With the special edition console I can see that happening.

This is a fairly good illustration showing the generation is at an end. Particularly where the console that flopped is outselling everything in hardware.

This really shows how much of an impact Halo has on the shifting of consoles, which honestly suprises me somehwat as by now I would have thought that halo would sell to current owners more than anything
