Overview

Hardware sales are down slightly for a second, again mainly due to the decrease in 3DS as people wait for the price cut which occurs in next weeks chart. Year on year hardware sales are down by an average of 35 percent. Total software sales down both week on week and year on year. There are five debuts in the top 40, which is up from two last week and there are no software milestones this week. One game sold over 100,000, up from zero last week, and the top 10 sold over 50,000, down from 13 last week.

Worldwide Hardware

Week on week sales are up for the Wii and Xbox 360, flat for the PlayStation 3 and PSP, and down for the DS and 3DS. The PlayStation 3 sold the most hardware this week with 138,000 units sold, which is the same as last week. The Xbox 360 sold 120,000 units this week, which is up just 1,000 (1%) compared to last week. Wii sales are also up 1,000 (1%) to 115,000 units sold. The DS is the bestselling handheld with sales of 115,000 units; this is a decrease of 2,000 (-2%). The PSP sold 96,000 units, the same as last week. The 3DS is in last place sold 32,000 units, a decrease of 17,000 (-35%). The 3DS is getting a huge price cut for next week’s charts; therefore expect the 3DS to take the top spot. Total week on week sales decreased 17,000 (-3%) to 616,000 units.

Year on year sales are down for every platform, ranging from down 27,000 units all the way up to 173,000 units. The PlayStation 3 is down 40,000 (-22%), the Wii is down 41,000 (-26%), and the Xbox 360 is down 83,000 (-41%). The PSP is down 27,000 (-22%) and the DS is down 173,000 (-60%).

Hardware Home Consoles

The PlayStation 3 has been in sole position of first for the last five weeks and been ahead of the Xbox 360 for eight weeks now. The Wii is in third for the second straight week and third time in four weeks. Compared with ten weeks ago PlayStation 3 sales are up, and Wii and Xbox 360 sales are down.

Hardware Handhelds

The gap between the DS and PSP shrinks to the smallest amount since the week of June 4. 3DS sales fall for a third week to its lowest point, however this week represents the lowest point the 3DS will hit for a very long time, as the price cut hits next week’s chart. Compared with ten weeks ago DS and PSP sales are up and 3DS sales are down.

Worldwide Software

Five games debuted in the top 40 this week, up from two last week. J-League Pro Soccer Club o Tsukurou! 7 Euro Plus (PSP) debuted at the top this week with sales of 101,000. It is the only game to sell 100,000 or more copies. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Kirby: Mass Attack (DS) debuted at number five with sales of 73,000. The game launched in Japan and will release on September 19 in both the Americas and EMEAA.

Toriko: Gourmet Survival! (PSP) debuted at number six with sales of 66,000. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.

All Kamen Rider: Rider Generation (DS) debuted at number 10 with sales of 52,000. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Fishing Resort (Wii) debuted at number 27 with sales of 22,000. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Zumba Fitness (Wii) at number two with sales of 92,000. Mario Kart Wii is at number three with sales of 82,000. Wii Sports Resort is at number four with sales of 75,000.

Pokémon Black / White Version (DS) is at number seven with sales of 64,000. Rhythm Heaven (Wii) is at number eight with sales of 64,000. Just Dance 2 (Wii) is at number nine with sales of 52,000.

Software

Week on week software totals are up for PSP, flat for the DS, and down for every other platform. The Wii takes the top spot this week with 1.26 million games sold, a decrease of 85,000 (-6%). The PlayStation 3 sold 1.00 million games, a decrease of 176,000 (-15%). Xbox 360 software sales drop below one million to 980,000, which is a decrease of 151,000 (13%). The DS sold 820,000 games, a decrease of just 2,000 (1%), which is essentially flat compared to last week. PSP game sales are up compared to last week with 459,000 games sold, an increase of 82,000. The 3DS sold 133,000 games, a decrease of 30,000 (-18%). Total combined software is down week on week to 4.66 million games sold a decrease of 362,000 (-7%).

Year on year software totals are down across the board. The PlayStation 3 is down 164,000 (-14%), the Wii is down 530,000 (-30%) and the Xbox 360 is down 48,000 (-5%). The DS is down 648,000 (-44%) and the PSP is down 132,000 (-22%). Total combined software is down 1.39 million (-23%) games sold year on year.

Software Home Consoles

Wii software sales are at the top for a third straight week, and for the seventh time in ten weeks. PlayStation 3 software sales are in second for a third straight week and Xbox 360 software sales are in third for a seventh straight week. Compared to ten weeks ago PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 software sales are down.

Software Handhelds

3DS software sales drop for a sixth straight week and are in third for a fifth straight week. 3DS software sales should pick up considerably for next week’s chart. PSP software sales after being flat for three consecutive weeks are up this week. DS software remains well ahead of the PSP though the gap is now below the 2:1 margin, at 1.79:1. Compared with ten weeks ago the PSP is up and the DS and 3DS are down.

IMO the fact that the active PS3 user base is a bit larger than active 360 user base as I read a few weeks ago is true, YTD PS3 SW sales are a bit above 360 ones and PS3 SW sales are a bit above 360 ones for the last 7 weeks... What do think VGC ? The RROD and defective % is part of the answer ?

Fix your weekly software numbers !!!
we have known for now a month that they are wrong thanks to Sony and Nintendo Shipment, and still weeks in weeks out you keep giving out blatantly wrong numbers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wii software is only outselling PS3 and Xbox360 in an imaginary world full of fairies....

The plans do exist for Fishing Resort (Wii) to be released in North America. XSEED Games will handle the publishing duties this Fall
