PS3 Game Values Drop and 360 Values Increase as PSN Still Down
by VGChartz Staff, posted on 12 May 2011 / 11,082 ViewsAs the PlayStation Network enters week #217 of downtime (at least it feels like that long) due to hackers that may or may not have been "hacktivist" group Anonymous, the resale values of the biggest online games have taken major hits. Well... they've taken hits on the PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 versions, overall, are up in value, most likely do to gamers migrating across platform lines for their online gaming fix.
Check out these handy dandy charts from the VideoGamePriceCharts.com blog compiled from the list of most popular online games (from Major Nelson) and game resale values from VideoGamePriceCharts.com (PS3 and 360, determined by a collation of used game prices from all over the internet):

As you can see, the average resale values of the current top 10 online games have raised slightly for the Xbox 360 (a 0.7% increase), while PlayStation 3 resale values have dropped by an average of 7.4%.
With the most recent news out of Sony putting the PSN's return at around May 31 (maybe), things are probably going to continue to get worse before they get better for Sony fans.
Thanks to analyst Jesse Divnich for finding this.
If you don't want to read bad news while Psn is down, I suggest steering clear of all independent game sites, and stick to the Sony ones until this problem is resolved. Please don't attack the site and its authors.
LOL @ this news. Spinned so hard to make it into another PSN negative discussion....only in VGC folks.
DERP Sorry, that's the only thing I could think about after reading this article...
This is worse for PS3 fans because they can't play the games in multiplayer online mode when PSN is down, would think that would be obvious...? That is why the value would go down, makes sense. The question is do they bounce back up quickly when PSN is restored, and how do they compare to the Wii. If Wii also dropped in price, than it could be coincidence and it's more good news for 360 than anything else. If Wii rose in price like the 360 than it is more significant the PS3 dropped...
How is this worse for PS3 fans? They can now get games more affordably. Seems like a good thing. Fanboy articles are really annoying.
(Wii+PS3 is more common than 360+PS3, so I would expect Wii sales to be impacted too...)
I think this is very interesting and appropriate. Wow, network outage has a very measurable impact... That said, I think it is very strange that Wii is not included in this comparison.
Wow just wow, this article was really pointless. Resale prices? Really? Whats next?
Meh PSN is down, no big surprise. Good for PS3 owners getting a better deal, But nothing to really brag about either way.
This story is pointless. But, anybody who thinks this downtime isn't damaging the PS3 is in cloud cuckooland. Getting PSN back online is a priorty, keeping it online and safe is going to be Sony's biggest challenge. Not to mention winning back consumer confidence and winning back those that have jumped ship. Sony have it all to do now.
This isn't going to effect Sony or Microsoft, since these are all resell games. They aren't going to see a dime of this money anyways. The PSN outage is a huge problem, but the fact that it's FREE shouldn't disappoint gamers as much as if they were actually paying for it. I see so many gamers bitching about PSN being down, yet they don't put any money into it for the PS3. Gamers who are playing EQ2, Star Wars Galaxy, Free Realms may even be more peeves since they put money into play those games.
Now is a good time to buy PS3 games used on ebay, amazon marketplace and what not. It would be interesting to see if the price of used PSP games also went down. Most PSP users probably don't even bother with PSN so maybe not though.
@ Jordahn Almost always multi-plat on 360 trade in for less than PS3 games due to the 360 copies acutally selling more. Since the title sells more new, that means more are traded in in comparison to the PS3 copies thus lowering the need to get more traded in at a higher price. There is almost always more 360 copies of a game traded in than a PS3 copy, just the simple rules of supply and demand.
If 'anonymous' did not do the hack, then I am sure Xbox live will be hit sometime in the future. Now that will be interesting; Microsoft would have to set up mass counseling centers for their customers, "Help, I can't take this anymore. It's been five minutes and I still cannot play Black Ops 2, (cry cry cry)"
Well-that"s exactly why MS gave the hackers so much money and the order to hack the PSN. The same did rupert murdoch with the german Pay TV channel Premiere. This is much cheaper than the 500mio dollar kinect campaign. The casual kinect gamers don"t buy games and they don"t waste money for xbox live. But the migrating PS3 core gamers will.
I've been mainly going through my back log of campaigns I still need to finish.
not surprised , as a major Sony supporter, they have really fucked up, I am so disappointed , in how they have handled the PSN outage, " were working around the clock " BULL SHIT, if they were working around the clock it would of been back up 10 days ago. I understand things happen, but this is unexceptable.
These statisctic must be iffy if a "popular" game like FIFA 11 can rise in price so much.
Some variables to consider: -Are more PS3 games being returned as opposed to 360 games (supply and demand) -Are the PS3 games harder to sell than the 360 games (again, supply and demand) -Is the amount of time since release effecting the price (older games go down in price) -Who would you rather be: Ben Affleck or Matt Damon (rhetorical question)
That is better for us consumers who buy used games. Sony doesn't care about this as second hand does not contribute to their bottom line. @ Jorhhan: Sony products may have sold more to begin with as there are more 360 owners who terade in more games thus higher supply lowering the price of the used games (just an Econ 1010 theory)
The change is Xbox 360 prices can hardly be related to the PSN downtime. It should be pretty obvious that PS3 owners would hold off purchasing much for this PS3 during this time though.
@Michael-5 Maybe it did affect PS3 sales. Maybe they were supposed to be higher.
So when sony drops 17% in used resale value they come about the same as Xbox... and why should Sony be worried about 2nd hand market??? Also you are posting the "maybe" as wrong information since the source is a lot different in the content than you want to show...
lol you would think that. Vgchartz is the most biased website to sony products i have ever been on.
I rarely trade in games, anyway. Plus, just because you get less for your games as trade in, that doesn't mean that Ga,estop is passing the savings on to customers. I bet the actual price they sell for is pretty close if not identical to the 360 versions. And last but not least, it's used games. People that trade in games are used to getting screwed over by Gamestop and the others. It doesn't really help or hurt the manufacturer (that receives nothing for the sale/trade in of used games), or anybody else. It's just a matter for Gamestop and the guy trading the game in to worry about. It's not that serious.
Sounds like we should all be using the internet to buy old PS3 games we missed before PSN goes back online then.
whoohoo!! if values really do drop, i'm gonna load up on used games :) after i get Brink and LA Noire, or course ;)
I just checked the price of a pre-owned copy of MW2 from gamestop's website the PS3 version acuatlly cost $2 more than the 360 version. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. ---- TRADE IN VALUES. This isn't what gamestop sells them for you realize right? This is what gamestop, and what people on sites like craigslist/ebay may give you for your used game when you sell it. Please read better before posting.
This just looks like a normal correction since PS3 games were more expensive to begin with.
I see it as only a win for ps3 gamers, and a loss for 360 gamers. I still don't know if this change will be a long term one.

i sold ModNation for only $17 like new, that's lame.it worth like $20 or more before PSN was down.
This is going to be ugly. I'll come back tomorrow to read the fanboy wars.
@Kupomogli: Its the truth right now, without Online Play, many PS3 games loose Value. Fact. i am more biased towards sony than to any other, but i (we) cant deny that 360 is the more Valuable Console, until PSN comes back up. and they didnt say 360 is better, only that PS3 games lost worth. And yes, there are lists stored at any retailer that display the 'worth' of a game. (for Example Gamestop: their list is saying how much youll get by trading a game in. i dont think they lower resale/pre-owned prices, but its just like VGC displayed up there.) .. Hopefully PSN comes back up soon. ^_^
Yet PS3 sales remain unaffected. I wonder if and when this outage will affect PS3 sales, especially since the Black Ops map Pack just came out on 360 exclusively.
@kupomogli no need to get all emotional. its factual data of the retail prices. of course the retail price of PS3 games will drop drastically since psn is down its not rocket science.
VGChartz: XBOX360 is better than PS3. You might as well use that as your next headline. Everyone who reads VGChartz news knows that's what you really want to post.
