Xbox Officially Announces Disc-to-Digital Feature - News

Xbox has officially announced its disc-to-digital feature that will let Xbox players transfer their physical disc games to digital versions. It will be available for Xbox Insiders for testing starting August 31.
This new feature is a way to broaden Xbox's "commitment to game preservation." The majority of Xbox Series X and Xbox One discs support this new feature. Thousands of titles will be available and more will be added over time.
Xbox says "players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.
"We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time. While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come."

How? With console prices sky rocketing you think people are going to switch so they can go back to buying disc which barely anyone is doing? Xbox physical sales are in the toilet now even their own ecosystem cares about physical.
This is just like the BC issue that everyone thought was such a big deal and Xbox release one of the most comprehensive BC programs in console history. What does that do for them? Nothing. It leads to them having one of the worst gens since the original Xbox. The majority doesn't care. PS makes over 50% of their revenue from 10 GAAS games.
All I got from that is "Bah, you're an idiot, nobody wants discs anymore!!". Have fun with your digital library of PlayStation games that are disappearing.
Microsoft next console will be digital only to be, this is just BC...and almost all microsoft games are not even on the dics
It's actually very simple. Playstation is not a monopoly in the gaming industry and the industry itself is subject to fluctuations in consumer interest. Good/Bad decisions will have an impact on their bottom line.
If they can go from the PS2 160m (where they were actually closer to a monopoly) to the PS3 80m, anything is possible. Especially as developers are making games more hardware agnostic.
I don't think anyone is saying the disc topic alone will cripple their audience or give Xbox a win next gen, but none of the platform holders are above goodwill. History has shown us this many times already
Playstation has a total monopoly and bad decisions (within reason) won't impact their bottom line. Going all digital is not a bad enough decision to dethrone them. An XBSS costs the same as a PS5 and XBSX you can forget about. No-one's really buying the XBSS so if they arent buying that why buy a helix which will obviously be a lot more expensive.
Maybe Nintendo should do this too
Let's not forget that back in 2013 Xbox got very anti-consumer before the Xbox One launch. The people calling the shots tend to get greedy when they are in a strong position, so competition like this keeps it healthy so credit where credit is due to Xbox for the effort. People have to vote with their wallets, however.
Not really lol.. you know where this going right? Xbox is clearly going disc less next gen . All this preservation is just keeping the current games alive, as there wont be a disc drive next gen. Like sony,

Xbox, you’re doing things right. This is pro-consumer, and I love the idea of having my own digital library.
Really hoping they will go back to the 360/XB program and fix it to do the same thing. My guess is they have it all planned out, but it was easier to implement for XBO/Series game discs because they have the serial numbers already imprinted on them. XB/360 discs do not, but they are working on a way to address that so people who insert an original disc will get the same entitlements.
Today has been a good day. Already ordered the X25 controller, this was announced and tomorrow I will try my hand at an X25 console.

Amazing that anyone still thinks Xbox can win next gen. Didn't Phil make it clear that the war is over? They aren't trying to win any gen and next gen will see the lowest consoles ever on both sides.

This is truly the best of both worlds. You're able to have a physical copy as a backup if the internet goes down for a long time or you somehow get banned from Xbox network while still having the convenience of not having to swap discs.

I like how physical movies often times come with a code for a digital copy, so it's awesome to see that feature come to gaming as well. Kudos to Microsoft.
Clearly a response to playstation's digital only dystopia. Wonder if playststion will adopt the same policy?
This will be irrelevant in 2 years when xbox is digital only. And people will be complaining about the end of physical disks like sony fans. Xbox wouldn't be making this disc to digital announcement, if they were planning on including a disc drive next gen.
Its more then just having a phyiscal disk. Its also about game preservation and consumers not losing their older titles due to a new generation. Xbox and PC have already adapted to digital. The idea is also allowing the customer access to the very thing they gave money to own.
Disk drives won't exist in the near future but able to carry your phyiscal media into the digital future is a major benefit.
If they actually cared, theyd keep backwards compatibility alive and keep discs going.
At the end of the day, they dont truly give a damm about you or i. They just care about profits.
I dont disagree with you, but unfortunately no one wants to pay to keep disks alive.
Remember Xbox dont have to do Phyiscal to Digital but its atleast a consumer friendly practice.
they have had this in the works for a long time. specifically because they are also going all digital. they are the most digital heavy of the big 3 by a huge margin.
Xbox is the only console manufacturers still care about people who own lots of discs. More people need to support Xbox in the future. Strong Xbox = more competition so that Sony/Nintendo not being greedy

We really gotta make Playstation do the same. Although its doubtful they'll recieve enough boycotts for that to happen. Casuals will buy PS6 day one for GTA6, FIFA/FC, Madden etc.
Hmm I wonder how they make sure the same disc isn't claimed on multiple accounts. Anyways it's neat to have both options, but it's maybe also a bit hyped up considering this is basicly how it worked for most games on PC in the years between steam was introduced and physical games were canned and everyone just insisted physical PC games didn't matter during that period.
Edit: Okay I guess the difference would be you can still play the physical game on other accounts? Presumably at least

Phyiscal games that require online still require online servers. Many games require online access to play and a disk doesn't solve that.
Do your research, more then 90% does not need online to play..not sure why soo many think that way..
Some of the most popular games require online and also come on disk. Example: Fortnite.
