Overview
Hardware sales are down for home consoles (-6% to -8%) and down considerably for handhelds (-22% to 035%) and software sales are down for every platform (-4% to -39%), except for the Xbox 360 (6%). All three home consoles and the DS are between 150,000 and 200,000, while the PSP and 3DS (only released in Japan) are between 50,000 and 100,000. The only hardware milestone this week is for the Wii which passes the 86 million mark. When it comes to software milestones, ordered in their position this week: Pokémon Black / White Version (DS) sales rocket past the 9 million mark; Wii Sports crosses 76 million; Killzone 3 (PS3) passes 1 million; and Halo: Reach (X360) reaches the 8 million mark. Three games sold over 200,000, nine sold over 100,000 and the top 18 sold over 50,000.
Worldwide Hardware
Week on week sales are down across the board, with home consoles taking a small hit and handhelds taking a dive. The DS is this week’s top platform as sales decrease 56,000 (-22%) to 193,000. The PlayStation 3 is the second bestselling platform and bestselling home console with sales of 185,000, a decrease of 15,000 (-8%). The Wii drops 10,000 (-6%) to 161,000. The Xbox 360 also drops 10,000 (-6%), sales are down to 157,000. Both PSP and 3DS (which is currently only available in Japan) sales fall below 100,000 this week. The PSP sees a decrease of 29,000 (-25%) to 87,000. The 3DS is down to 66,000, a decrease of 35,000 (-54%). Total sales fall below 1 million to 849,000, a drop of 155,000 (-16%).
Year on year sales continue to follow the pattern, down for every platform, except for the Xbox 360 which is up slightly. The Xbox 360 has seen an increase of 14,000 (10%). The PSP has the smallest decrease down 61,000 (-41%). The PlayStation 3 has the second smallest decrease as it drops 63,000 (-25%). The Wii is down 111,000 (-41%). The DS with the biggest drop is down 137,000 (-42%). Total sales are down 292,000 (-26%) compared to one year ago.
All three home consoles have dropped for a fourth straight week. The PlayStation 3 is in the lead for a fifth week, the Wii in second for a third week and the Xbox 360 in third for a third week. Sales continue to remain near each other for all three, as during most weeks this year, when one increases the others does as well.
3DS sales drop for a fourth straight week, since its release in Japan. Expect sales to increase next week as it is launching in EMEAA, and should increase the following week as it is launching in America.
Worldwide Software
Three games debuted in the top 40, down from four the previous week. Homefront (X360) is this week’s top debut, as the game also debuted for the PlayStation 3 and PC. The Xbox 360 version debuts at number two with sales of 589,000. The PlayStation 3 version debuts at number three with sales of 240,000. The PC version debuts at number 16 with sales of 54,000. The game debuted in America and EMEAA and will launch in Japan on April 14. The game was developed by Kaos Studios.
Shogun 2: Total War (PC) debuts at number seven with sale of 118,000. The game launched in America and EMEAA and has no plans to be released in Japan. The game was developed by The Creative Assembly.
Top Spin 4 (PS3) debuts at number 39 and the Xbox 360 version debuts just behind it at number 40. The PlayStation 3 version debuts with sales of 26,000 and the Xbox 360 version debuts with sales of 24,000. The game launched in America and EMEAA and has no plans to be released in Japan. The game was developed by 2K Czech.
Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Pokémon Black / White Version (DS) stays at number one this week with sales of 955,000. Wii Sports is up one spot to number four with sales of 144,000.
Killzone 3 (PS3) jumps up two spots to number five with sales of 141,000. Dragon Age II (X360) last week’s top debut falls to number six from number two, with sales of 129,000. Just Dance 2 (Wii) stays at number eight with sales of 111,000. Wii Sports Resort stays at number nine with sales of 105,000. Kinect Adventures! (X360) rounds out the top ten with sales of 93,000.
Software sales take a hit this week as the Xbox 360 is the only platform to be up week on week. The Xbox 360 is up 111,000 (6%) to 2.01 million games sold. The DS sees a decrease of 1.34 million (-39%) to 2.07 million. This drop can be attributed to the release of Pokémon Black / White Version in America last week. The Wii is down 65,000 (-4%) to 1.78 million games sold. The PlayStation 3 is drops 254,000 (-13%) to 1.72 million games sold. The PSP decreases 81,000 (-16%) to 426,000 games sold. The 3DS drops 35,000 (-34%) to 67,000 games sold. Total combined software is down week on week to 8.07 million games sold a decrease of 1.66 million (-17%).
Year on year software total are down for every platform except for the Xbox 360, which is up 225,000 (13%). The PS3 is down 1.79 million, the Wii is down 837,000, the DS is down 553,000, and the PSP is down 175,000. Total combined software is down 3.06 million games sold year on year.
Home consoles software sales remain neck and neck for another week, as the gap is less than 300,000 this week. Xbox 360 takes the top spot from the PlayStation 3 which falls to third this week. Expect sales to remain really close until a major game launches.
DS software after four straight weeks of increases, decrease this week which was to be expected as the new Pokémon launched last week in America. PSP software sales decrease for a third straight week, as software sales fall below 500,000 for the first time this year. 3DS software sales only being available in Japan and with limited supply see a decrease in software sales for a third week.

It looks like, XBOX 360 and Wii are slowly dying. I think PS3 will have a great year, probably price cut after the summer will increase sales even more. PS3 has so much new software coming out this year that people will definitely invest into PS3 and now with 3D TVs coming down in price it will actually help them even more.

well, around a million in japan, plus 1.2 millions on preorders, it does not seems so difficult to get to that point.
3DS is going to finally see software rocket up in the next two weeks, and hardware sales should be pretty crazy too. I see it selling 3 million by the end of the fisical year, not sure about Nintendo's projected 4 million.
