Overview – The DS, Wii, and Xbox 360 are up week on week, while the PlayStation 3 and PSP drop. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (PC) is the top selling game of the week, while only 1 game debuts with over 100,000 in sales. Some slight adjustments for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 did occur for the last 10 weeks as new data came in.
Hardware – Week on week sales is up for Microsoft and Nintendo’s systems and down for Sony’s systems. The DS and Wii are up 13,000 and 5,000 respectively. With no major releases for either system this shows the strength of the Nintendo brand. The Xbox 360 is up slightly, 3,000, on the release of the $199 360S Arcade in America, where it saw an increase of 20,000. This was offset by drops in EMEAA and Japan. The PlayStation 3 dropped 16,000 after the release of the white PS3 Slim and Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes (PS3) in Japan last week. The PSP is also down 16,000 after some major releases in Japan last week.
The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 continue to outperform where they were a year ago. The PS3 is up 54,000 while the Xbox 360 continues to sell twice as much compared to last year, up an impressive 112,000. The DS, PSP, and Wii are down year on year. The Wii is down 76,000, going from outselling the PS3 and X360 combined to only outselling the PS3 by only 11,000. The DS dropped 135,000; however it is still the best selling system for the week and the PSP fell 39,000. Expect handhelds to continue to be down year on year as the release of the 3DS approaches.
The Xbox 360 continues to outperform its rivals on the strength of the 360S and the newly released 360S Arcade model in America. It has outsold the PlayStation 3 for 8 straight week and the Wii 7 straight weeks. There have been some minor adjustments to past sales of the PS3 and X360 this week as new data became available. The PS3 saw increases of about 10,000 a week the past 10 weeks, while the X360 also saw an increase for the past 8 weeks, since the 360S was released in America. The Wii did not get an adjustment and its sales have settled in the 150,000 range. The PlayStation 3, after the bump last week on strong software releases, fell 16,000, but is still 11,000 higher than it was 2 weeks ago.
Software – After a week of strong debuts only 2 games debuted in the top 50. Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X (PSP) was this week’s top debut, debuting at number 3 with sales of 109,000 in Japan. StormLover (PSP) debuts at number 46 with sales of 17,000.
Other debuts outside the top 50 include Heart Catch PreCure! Oshare Collection (DS) at number 59 with sales of 15,000. Battle Spirits: Digital Starter (DS) debuts at number 63 with sales of 14,000 and J-League Winning Eleven 2010: Club Championship (PS2) at number 93 with sales of 10,000, which is the only PlayStation 2 game in the top 100. However for a system that is ten years old and is from last generation that is impressive.
Rounding out the top 10 at positions one and two are StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (PC) with sales of 328,000 and Wii Sports with sales of 129,000. At positions four through ten are Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Wii with sales of 101,000, Wii Sports Resort with sales of 100,000, Wii Party with sales of 80,000, Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies for the DS with sales of 68,000, Pokémon Heart Gold / Soul Silver Version for the DS with sales of 67,000, Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes for the PS3 with sales of 61,000 and Wii Fit Plus with sales of 58,000.
Overall, software week on week is down across the board as only one game debuted with over 100,000 in sales. The PlayStation 3 and PSP had the biggest drops after a strong week of debuts last week in Japan. They both fell 21% or 297,000 for the PS3 and 149,000 for the PSP. The Xbox 360 fell 11% or 143,000. The DS and Wii decreased 9% and 7%, or 140,000 and 131,000 respectively.
Year on year is a mix with some increasing while others fell. The PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PSP are all up, 33%, 5%, and 6% respectively, or 282,000, 58,000 and 32,000. The DS and Wii are down, falling 9% and 23% respectively, or 148,000 and 515,000.

Now if only the software numbers for the 360 could increase.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the picture now is completely different from what it was in 2008 between PS3 and 360. In 2008 the 360 price cut killed basically all momentum that the PS3 had coming off of it's price cut from the year before. I mean for crying out loud, the 360 even consistently outsold it in Japan for a while. Now clearly PS3's strength has reached a point where its momentum can no longer be cut. Hell, if anything PS3 sales seem to have increased since the 360S came out. And that's in the middle of the slow summer months.

Congratulations to the PS3, PSP and X360 on the increases. Dragon Quest IX deserves a mention too, a stellar performance indeed.
