Take-Two CEO Says 'PC Platform is Becoming More and More Important'

Take-Two CEO Says 'PC Platform is Becoming More and More Important' - News

by William D'Angelo , posted 2 days ago / 2,202 Views

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick in an investors meeting held this week attended by GamesRadar revealed the PC market is becoming more important for them. This is despite Grand Theft Auto VI not releasing day one on PC.

"I assume this is a question regarding the cadence of PC launches," Zelnick said when asked about if the console shortages would change the delivery of games on PC. "The strategy of the company is, over time, generally speaking, to launch for any platforms for which there's a meaningful audience. But that isn't always the case, and certainly, if platforms were no longer viable, we could change that strategy."

He added, "And I would note that the PC platform is becoming more and more important to our company over time."

A PC released for Grand Theft Auto VI has not officially been announced, but is likely given the track record of developer Rockstar.

Grand Theft Auto V first released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013, followed by the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2014. It wouldn't get a PC release until April 2015.

Grand Theft Auto VI will launch for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19.

And thats why they delayed the PC version. They need people to double dip.

I'm actually surprised by the amount of comments about piracy when Zelnick doesn't mention it in any form. But sure, all PC players do it on pirated games.

Well, except for Capcom games, of course, given that PC is their main platform, and has been for years now.

Capcom sell most units on PC because they’re selling $8 Resident evil and monster hunter games primarily.

It makes the majority of its revenue on console still.

Valve 20.6% of revenue. Playstation 10.6% of revenue. Xbox and Nintendo aren't a large enough percentage to force disclosure.

  • +8

Do those numbers even sound correct to you? Where’s the other 70% coming from?

  • +4

my guy you have capcoms own report right there. They have non gaming divisions that account for over 26% of their total revenue. which is shown in the report. Like I said before they don't have to disclose other partners if their percentage is too low, that's why epic and other game store vendors aren't on there. valve and sony are high enough they do have to disclose and it shows that steam is twice the revenue of playstation. they have mobile game revenue, other pc key selling revenue etc.

  • +9

The report is in Japanese and the numbers you are claiming are in it sound not even close to being correct

  • +4

Hahaha you're actually shoving your fingers in your ears shouting lalalala when you can just run it through a translator or even an LLM. My god man.

Maybe you should call the finance department of capcom cause at this point that's who you're arguing with

  • +4

It’s pretty obvious that people took a number from a financial
report that they didn’t understand and reported as meaning something that it didn’t. Then other “news” sites just copy and paste it.

PlayStation + Steam representing 30% of total revenue is 100% wrong. In their last financial report “Digital Comtents” were 80% of total revenue. Mobile contents were ¥600m vs. The ¥54.6b of Digital contents.

Capcom doesn’t have some magical revenue source that accounts for the rest of their revenue.

  • +4

Are you completely ignoring that iave said MULTIPLE times capcom don't have to disclose partners that don't meet the threshold for reporting. Valve and Sony do hence why they reported 20.6 and 10.7 percent for those.

Microsoft, Nintendo, Epic, all the pc key seller, their own key selling, physical stores don't meet the threshold for reporting.

Capcom get 8% of their revenue from physical sales.
26% from non gaming related revenue.
33% from Sony and Valve.
1.2% from mobile related sales.

The rest are digital sales from tonnes of partners storefront and partners on PC and MS and Nintendo where no single one meets the threshold.

You're so consistently stubborn when all of this data is literally available to you. I told you over and over that valve and Sony were the only ones that met the threshold to be reported and you just over and over ignored it and asked where the rest was.

Literally every single thing I've said you have access to but I need to hold your hand and guide you through it apparently. So in conclusion, valve is their single biggest source of revenue. It's not ALL their pc revenue, everyone else is too low to report, so steam alone makes up 20.6% and playstation store is half of that.

8% of revenue coming from physical sales are obviously console sales. Capcom just don't have to tell us how much revenue they get from pc as a whole or console platforms as a whole. Valve is just by far the biggest slice of that pie.

  • +4

They also said PC is 54.5% of sales by unit, and Console is 45.5%

You can work out from that quite easily that console still generates way more revenue.

Take a new title even. RE: Requiem on console sells most of its copies Inthe USA and Europe, where the game costs $70 and 80 Euros - which is $91.86. On Steam the biggest platform is China with 22% of all sales, and Asia being the biggest region by far. In China the game at full price was $50 and other Asian regions are all similar.

It’s obvious there is a massive average unit price disparity between Steam and Console.

Then there are the massive sales on Steam. Take Resident Evil 3 as an example. Even in the USA it was reduced to $4 on Steam this year, during March and again in April. In China(its biggest market) it was under $3.

Sales happen on console too but there nowhere near as big, and you will very rarely see old titles like RE3 in the topsellers list or even close, because PC gamer are way more price sensitive, especially when your core markets are Asia and South America(Brazil is the third largest country for RE3 sales). When RE3 went on sale at this prices it charted as high as 5th position on Steam on the 20th of March (based on revenue, meaning sale units were insanely high).

As soon as Steam became the big platform for Capcom you can see from their quarterly sales data how all these old catalogue title now regularly sell like 200-400k a quarter(a million a year).

The average sales price on Steam for a Capcom game is probably like half of the average sales price per unit on Console. Capcom never disclose this breakdown though, they champion units because it sounds impressive.

  • +1

"probably like" "you can work out easily that"

I've given you capcoms own numbers in revenue, Steam alone is not only the biggest slice of unit sales it is also the biggest slice of revenge. Not including all the other pc storefronts including capcoms own.

the conversation is over.

Random numbers from a financial statement mean nothing unless you know how they are calculated or what they are saying exactly. Especially when they clearly don’t correlate to the reality they appear to be proclaiming.

For example in Sony’s financial release they register Physical sale revenue and Digital Revenue, but they are calculated in different ways and they basically overstate the difference by about 300%. It is never explained anywhere in the accounts that they are calculated in this way, and if you simply don’t know it then you’d never have the correct information.

Accounts are incredibly flexible and most of the time are unreadable without explicit knowledge of the accounting practises and specific terminology used.

What's wrong with modding? Even most publishers don't seem to mind it, and many even straight up embrace it.

Translation:
"We would support PC Day 1 if you guys didn't pirate brand new games"

  • +2

Awful excuse, this isn't the 00s any longer how many new PC games get pirated to a notable degree compared to actual sales? I honestly think the biggest case in newer times was probably emulation of switch 1 games and those sold like hotcakes anyways.

  • +4

Most of the PlayStation games had no DRM and were all on pirate sites day one. I remember reports saying some individual pirate sites had more downloads than Steam had sales for one of these games.

  • +2

Is this aimed at me? Because it just sort of adds into what I'm saying, pirating was (and still is) huge for old games, new ones are not remotely in the same category.

  • 0

What is defined as new? Those game were launched in the last 5 years and were on pirate sites day one of the PC launch

  • 0

They are old game though? Unless I'm misunderstanding what games you're talking about.

  • 0

So if sony released Wolverine on PC day one, it wouldn't get pirated? But if they released GT7 it would be fair game? Is that it?

  • 0

Your statements make no sense. What Playstation games were you talking about specifically? And yeah ironically a late port is probably more vulnerable to pirating than a Day 1 release, not saying whether or not that's fair but it undermines the whole point of holding off on a PC release. The same people who were anticipating a Steam release and planning to buy it aren't gonna go "oh wait I can pirate it instead?" in the extremely rare case where that's an option day 1.
Old games were a different story, but I know a pretty varied PC crowd and the newest title I've heard of anybody pirating is Sims 4 from 2014.

  • 0

Pretty much every PS game. None of them had DRM except Stellar blade and the multilayer ones.

The fact that they are "old" here is besides the point. It wasn't the PS4/5 version that was cracked and playable. People were putting up the PC version on pirate websites day one.

Any new Pc game that doesn't have serious DRM will be available on pirated sites day one.

Games with Denuvo are even getting cracked now at a faster rate than in the past. Crimson Dessert has been cracked, and Doom: The dark ages previously.

  • 0

Okay. Still not something people that were planning to buy the games do and if you release day 1 people are more likely to want to buy it. There will always be people who insist on pirating for one reason or another but if Rockstar expect those people to buy a whole console and the game, weeeeell... But they insist that that's a legitimate reason to keep the game away from the 10s of millions of people who would buy the game legitimately on PC.
They've tried different excuses in the past for this release strategy but there's no way around it being an anti-consumer move.

  • 0

I think it's disingenuous to pretend that the internet isn't full of piracy. You start off saying 'awful excuse then proceed to excuse piracy'

  • +1

I don't think your statement really adds up, my point is it's a bad excuse because the effect on sales is tiny in today's world and that's exactly what I proceeded to say.

It's an anti consumer move and if pirating is their excuse they literally blame the consumer for it, when we all know it's to increase sales by double dipping, just like skipping physical and launch was excused with leaks and just so happens to increase their profit margin. The vast majority of developers launch on PC day 1, in what world should the biggest game get a pass for skipping?

Sogreblute (1 day ago)

Why are there so many people talking about pirating on PC? If PC pirating was that bad as some of you claim then no one would release their game on PC and PC wouldn't be the dominate platform for gaming with the most gamers and the most games released yearly. It's obvious they just want people to double dip on GTA6.

I do wonder where they earn more with pcs easily mod the game instead of paying with that online money

  • 0

They earn the overwhelming majority of money on PS from GTO. There was a leak recently, and PC is a tiny proportion. PS4 is bigger than PC still.
