Americas Preorders Chart, 3rd July 2010

by William D'Angelo, posted on 08 July 2010 / 6,847 Views

In its last week of pre-orders Crackdown 2 added 25,000 units for a total of 100,000 for the Xbox 360. However with poor reviews and sales of the original favoring America 2:1 over EMEAA and Japan, expect week one sales to be around 150,000 in America and 75,000 for EMEEA and Japan combined, for a total of 200,000.

The only other game in its last week before release is Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable for the PSP with total pre-orders hitting 30,000, expect week one sales to be around 35,000 or so, around double the first Persona game on PSP.

After 5 weeks of steady declines in the weekly acceleration of pre-orders from a high of 68,000 to a low of 17,000, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty pre-orders jumped to 75,000 for the week with 4 weeks left until release. Pre-orders are now above the 500,000 mark. Pre-orders should steadily rise and may reach 1 million in total during the final week before launch.

Starcraft II America Preorder 3rd July 2010

Since E3 Halo: Reach has seen pre-orders steadily increase adding another 55,000 for a total of 439,000 with 11 weeks left until release. It is currently tracking 50,000 units below Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for the Xbox 360 at the same time frame. However the pace may change as advertising begins ramping up. Halo 3, the last main title in the series managed to sell 2,844,000 in its first week in America and 3,815,000 worldwide while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sold 3,286,000 in America and 4,942,000 worldwide. We'll keep a close eye on Reach pre-orders as it may become the highest selling game for first week sales on a single platform.

Halo Reach VS CoDMW2

Beyond Reach, Call of Duty Black Ops added another 41,000 pre-orders for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for a total of 262,000 pre-orders. Medal of Honor added another 46,000 pre-orders for a total of 150,000 with 15 weeks until launch. Gran Turismo 5 added 7,000 pre-orders for a total of 96,000. However expect pre-orders to start increasing more rapidly as November approaches.

I just don't understand the point of pre-ordering game software these days... as if you won't be able to just walk into any store and pick up any one of those games on launch day without pre-ordering it. Back in the day (when games still used the cartridge format), it wasn't uncommon for big releases like Donkey Kong Country or Mario 64 or Zelda: Ocarina of Time for example to be in short supply at launch due to the manufacturing constraints of the cartridge format, so it kind of made sense to pre-order it just in case you were left out in the cold on launch day. Fast forward to today, and game publishers can push millions of units the second the game in question goes gold. And I REALLY don't understand people who not only pre-order the game, but pay the whole thing off before it even comes out... as if plopping down $60 up front was going to make the game come out any faster for you or something.

@primogen18 Go to the vgchartz site, which can be accessed at the top of the page. Put your mouse over the "Data Analysis" tab then click on "pre-order chart" under the forecasting tools. Here is the link http://www.vgchartz.com/preorders.php

where are the longer charts? Why do they keep changing it and messing with the site. I hated the first new re-design, then they made it a little better, but I liked the long charts with sales and pre-orders beyond a few weeks or 50 top titles...

Pho_Hybrid (on 10 July 2010)

SC2 in 1st place? Awesome. RTS games on PC still have some strenght left, it even beats Halo:Reach.
