3D Being Considered For Wii Successor

by VGChartz Staff, posted on 17 June 2010 / 2,534 Views

With the 3DS revealed at E3, Nintendo is making a big push when it comes to the 3D market. Sony are also planning 3D for the PS3 as well so it seems the videogame market in general is pushing for 3D.

Speaking in Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Iwata hinted that 3D that the Wii's successor may be 3D compatible. Nintendo is looking for a 30% adoption rate for 3D before taking the dive, however.

"If you display a 3D image, the image quality becomes extremely bad, so we'd probably do it with the next system. We're thinking that the timing should be once the 3D television adoption rates crosses the 30% mark. We're looking at the adoption trends."

When asked if Nintendo figured there'd be some sort of "3D boom" and if that was why they adopted 3D for the 3DS, Iwata responded, referring to the VIrtual Boy,
"Absolutely not. Nintendo had an eye the charms of immersive 3D for games and released a 3D game machine 15 years ago, but the technology was not ready. After that, we looked for a chance, and decided two years back that we finally had the technology and parts to make a satisfying product."

Iwata also responded to the question of why they decided to adopt 3D for the 3DS. He says, "In 3D, it's easier to get a sense for position. In a game where the stages extend into the screen, it's surprisingly easier to control [compared to non 3D]. This is functionality for making games more pleasant to play, not just for show."

Iwata also seems to be a big supported of 3D technology as he also says that 3D is going to be part of the mainstream and the future.

"It allows us to realize images that are close to what you see in your daily life. In the future, 3D will become the mainstream of gaming."

What will ultimately be interesting and impressive is if Nintendo can pull off 3D on a TV without the need for 3D glasses.

Every console could do 3D, but you need more than twice the rendering power for 120 fps!!! I'm sure 3D with glasses has no future, because it is annoying. I hate the mediocre picture quality with these glasses. A lot of people need glasses to see at least something, BUT wearing two glasses at once and playing intense games isn't comfortable. What I would recommend is a high speed, highres CAM for realtime HEADTRACKING. Everybody is moving slightly in front of a gaming screen. If your sight is detected, that would imitate a 3D world. No need for shutter glasses and myriads of different 3D screen techs. McDaniel-77

I think, It would be reasonable for Nintendo to focus on a different novelty for Wii2 then glasses-free 3D display. Something original, innovative and hard to copy by competitors. But at the same time design their new console to support 3D tv. When adoption rate of that type of tv would reach 30% they could just enable that feature.

I should be getting Wii 2.

well I'm not buying a 3D TV

superchunk : +1 In France the HD TV penetration rate just crossed 50%, so realeising a HD console would make sense, at Wii's launch it was non sense, except if you thought the console would push the adoption rate quickly... but that was more the role of the PS3 (BRD and HD).

Kai Master (on 21 June 2010)

30 is a weird number, did he mean 33% (1/3)? I don't see a 30% penetration at the Wii 2's release, it will take 5-10 years at least.

If they're waiting for a 30% adoption rate for 3D, they're going to have to wait a while. Not Wii 2, and probably only a slim chance for Wii 3. When they start selling a 3D TV for less than $300, then they might catch on. Right now, it's just a novelty for rich people who want to blow 15K on a TV.

@superchunk: In the same way Sony used the PS3 to establish the Blu-Ray as the HD disc format, they are now using it to sell 3D TV sets. This strategy makes sense to Sony, who produces TV sets, but not to Microsoft or Nintendo.

I think they are aiming for a 2012 release of a Wii successor. Many of their main studios are delivering Wii and 3DS games this year. I guess they will now concentrate in HD titles to the launch line up. I estimate that will take at least two years to be developed, especially because Nintendo don't have experience with HD projects right now. I wouldn't rule out if they acquire some studios next year to help in this front. Anyway, by early 2011, Iwata might evaluate the 3D TV set adoption rate and decide about implementing it in the console. To do so, it will be necessary to double the graphical capacity of the console and I believe he want to release it at a low cost so that he can compete with the aging PS3 and 360.

Not a copy of anything. PS3 is willing put the cart before the horse. Nintendo waits for a real reason to push the new technology. Example is now, Wii is not HD because in 2006 HD was a very small part of people's homes. By 2012 when everyone puts out a new machine, HD will be in the greater majority of homes and it will then make sense. Same with 3D on a home consoles. It will be years before the technology is common in anyone's homes, so putting it out now is a cost for a company with no foreseeable return. Granted, in PS3 and 360's case, since they are HD, adding a 3D option to a game is not a huge detriment to video quality. Only issue is associated costs to build the 3D variant for the dev. So, its not a huge risk for Sony/MS to put out 3D games. Personally, I don't think 3D at home is going to take off until either those glasses are very cheap ($10 each or so) or TVs come out that do not require glasses (5 years out at least).

calvinandhobbes (on 17 June 2010)

shouldn't they join the hd bandwagon first? Also, it will look like a copy of the ps3!

JWS (on 17 June 2010)

Just as long as they don't use glasses i'm all for it. I also hope they name it WiiD

Goddbless (on 17 June 2010)

So 3D is the new bandwagon huh?

Ninten78 (on 17 June 2010)

If anyone can do it ,it's Nintendo!

Untamoi (on 17 June 2010)

@scottie: He also said "If you display a 3D image, the image quality becomes extremely bad, so we'd probably do it with the next system.". Notice that he said that they will probably do it with the next system (which is likely Wii successor). Sounds like they are definitely considering it. And who knows what adoption rate is when Wii successor is released...

spynx (on 17 June 2010)

It is possible to make 3ds tech on lcd. Sony has a prototype an won't display now.

johnsobas (on 17 June 2010)

i don't see it happening, it makes perfect sense for 3DS which has the screen built into the system but most people aren't gonna have 3D TVs, i know i won't i just bought a $1200 LCD HDTV last year. Then there is the issue of glasses, Nintendo doesn't like the idea of using glasses and i don't know of a solution for this with home consoles.

MrT-Tar (on 17 June 2010)

I can't stand the thought of glasses 3d now I've seen the 3DS

themizarkshow (on 17 June 2010)

If they can bring the 3DS tech to a console I'd be pretty psyched. Buying a new TV or wearing glasses sounds lame. If they can make it work on pretty much all HDteevee's though... fucking sweet.

Silver-Tiger (on 17 June 2010)

"If you display a 3D image, the image quality becomes extremely bad." Wrong. It just takes twice the processing power, and when you have a weak system, you obviously have to tone down the graphics. That's why the image gets worse.

scottie (on 17 June 2010)

I don't see anything that justifies the heading "3D Being Considered For Wii Successor" All I see is "Nintendo is looking for a 30% adoption rate for 3D before taking the dive" Which I personally would translate as "Nintendo completely and utterly rules out the possibility of 3D for Wii successor"
