New Super Mario Bros. Wii hits 1.3 million units sold

by Brett Walton, posted on 22 November 2009 / 9,803 Views

Preliminary VGChartz data is in for New Super Mario Bros Wii and it looks like the latest 2D Mario title is off to a very strong start. With over 900,000 units sold in the Americas in the first week, NSMB Wii will post the fourth biggest opening of the year so far behind Modern Warfare 2 (360 and PS3 versions) and Halo 3: ODST. Wii hardware sales surpassed 300,000 units this week in the Americas for the first time in 2009 - partly due to general holiday increases and partly due to the release of NSMB Wii. A similar increase was seen in Europe.

http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/newsupermariobroswii_hard.jpg

The game also sold over 400,000 units in Europe / Other Regions in the first two days on sale - more than any other Wii title with the exception of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii. With the Japanese release expected to bring in around 700,000 units in week one, total first week sales should be over two million units. This would make NSMB Wii the third fastest-selling Wii game to date behind Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii and with the holidays so close, VGChartz expects NSMB Wii to become the fastest-selling Wii game of all time in the first 6 weeks of worldwide release - easily beating the 5.1 million record set by Mario Kart Wii.

Keep checking VGChartz for the latest New Super Mario Bros. Wii sales news.

My 2nd midnight launch ever was thisgame and I even got a friend to buy one too.

atma998 (on 24 November 2009)

@Arius Dion Some people prefer to ''forget'' what the past showed us. Don't go to the Worldwide Weekly Chart's comment section if you don't want to see how many deluded people they are on this site.

ViolentPhlegm (on 24 November 2009)

@johnsobas: Where did you get the notion that npd had Wii at 1M last December? They had it at 2.15 million.

heruamon (on 24 November 2009)

Ohhhh...Reggie...lol!

Kalandorl (on 23 November 2009)

Watching the Hardcore fanboys laughing about the NSMBWii outselling MW2 is really amusing to me. Clearly they don't follow sales figures for Mario games. Unlike games like MW2, Mario games are extremely backloaded on sales. It might sell 1.3 million in week one, but unlike MW2 people will still be buying the game as a Xmas present 3 years later.

BoleroOfFire (on 23 November 2009)

Not surprised. I know a couple of people who are having trouble finding this game. People were starving for a 2-d Mario.

Kenology (on 23 November 2009)

@Blacksaber: Reggie said it'd outsell *A* version of MW2 on the HD Twins. Jeff said the 360 version, but that wasn't the bet, but rather an addendum/stealth goal post move after the fact by Jeff.

Arius Dion (on 23 November 2009)

How quickly people forget the whole MKWii Vs GTAIV incident, I see a replay of this. Also the yoy argument is getting weaker by the day. Last years Wii numbers were UNPRECEDENTED to come any where close to or even matching last years numbers is nothing short of fantastic. PS3 may be up yoy now but so what? Last year was abysmal. Wii down yoy yet still dominating, hate all you want. It won't change reality.

moondeep (on 23 November 2009)

Why do folks keep arguing that MW2 will have legs as if it were a Nintendo title? There's simply no logic or history to back that up. NSMB is a first-party Wii title that will have a similar sales curve to that of WiiFit, and it will easily surpass MW2 in lifetime sales. HOWEVER, that might take 2 years to get to that point, by which time there will be a MW3. Nintendo games are designed around sales over years, not weeks as is often the case with the HD twins. What is so hard to understand about this?

OmegaRugalv3 (on 23 November 2009)

By January ... no. When all is said and done? ... it will outsell MW2 with all system totals combined though. NSMBW will be the new Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii game that never stops 100 weeks later ....

Blacksaber (on 23 November 2009)

@Chris Reggie said it will be the 360 version by Jan. Still not sure if it will but that's another matter. Anyway good job NSMB Wii will pick this up soon!

ChrisIsNotSexy (on 23 November 2009)

@Tyagi You think MW2 will stop selling suddenly? Its 360 & PS3 & PC vs Wii. MW 2 will keep selling well above 1 million copies every week untill the end of the year. I dont see this game getting MW2's first week untill january. Sorry.

Soma (on 23 November 2009)

I don't think it will outsell it by January, nobody expected COD to sell that much. But at the end of the generation it will surely outsell them all. Also, if the Wii isn't up YoY doesn't matter, anything near would be really crazy numbers. The PS3 may be year over year, but that's because last year numbers were pretty poor.

OmegaRugalv3 (on 23 November 2009)

Considering Galaxy was only a 1 million seller in Japan while New Super Mario Bros DS was well over 5 million last time I checked ... I think it is safe to say that Japan will help the sales of NSMBWii big time. As for 360 version of MW2 vs NSMBW ... I think it's definately possible ... in time ... don't think January is enough time. Maybe a year or two from now when NSMBW joins MK Wii, Wii Sports, Wii Fit and Wii Play as games that just won't leave the damn chartz 100 weeks later ...

samus aran rules (on 23 November 2009)

I think one thing is safe to say already. NSMBW will be a bigger hit saleswise than Super Mario Galaxy, in Japan I predict NSMBW will outsell Galaxy´s total on it´s second week. I predict something like: Week 1: 750-900 k Week 2: 250-400 k In total I think the low end in Japan first two weeks is 1 million high end is 1,3 million. What do you think? Too high, too low? Keep in mind that preorders in Japan are rising like crazy for the game atm.

AnthonyW86 (on 23 November 2009)

Indeed i was wrong, was a quick post i guess. Somehow i added up the numbers of MW 1+2 and then some for the pc version(wich would make for a total of around 25m). Sometimes my mind just at up numbers on auto-pilot haha. My mistake about the mario kart bit then. But the rest of my post still stands. MW2 did outsell Galaxy in about a week, and it is very doubtfull that NSMB will sell as much by January as MW2 360 has already sold after two weeks.

Avinash_Tyagi (on 23 November 2009)

Anthony got owned

z101 (on 23 November 2009)

another LoL @ AnthonyW86. Look at the sales charts and then come back an apologise ;-) I don't know if NSMB will beat the MW2 numbers on one console by the end of january. But in lifetime sales it will easily beat combined (PS360+PC) MW2 sales.

atma998 (on 23 November 2009)

LoL @ AnthonyW86 Where did you find your numbers?

PEINe (on 23 November 2009)

actually mario kart for the wii alone has sold more than MW 1&2 for playstion 3 and x360 together

PEINe (on 23 November 2009)

wow anthonyw86 idiot mario kart wii sold around 18.44m copies. you are full of shit

AnthonyW86 (on 23 November 2009)

People still believing this will outsell MW2 must be joking. No mario game for the wii has sold more than the first MW, not even Mario Kart Wii. And MW2 sold as much in one week as Galaxy did in total up to now. And yes Reggie is full of sh**t. This will not sell more than MW2 x360 by the end of january. It won't even have sold as much as that game did in two weeks. This is just sales talk though, and NSMB looks like a great game to me. I'm actually tempted to buy a Wii for it, but i still find 200 bucks a tad to expensive.

Stefan.De.Machtige (on 23 November 2009)

@almcchesney Hmm. Reggie said that it would outsell MW2 on one console in the end of Januari. Januari!

almcchesney (on 23 November 2009)

hey reggie it didnt do as well as COD for 360, time to own, nintendo isnt the power house it used to be. Time to eat sh*t reggie

PEINe (on 23 November 2009)

wonderful. mario galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M, legend of zelda to go

Avinash_Tyagi (on 23 November 2009)

Looks like NSMB Wii pushed a lot of hardware, as according to ioi, sales will only be slightly down yoy, and since seasonal boost aren't anywhere big enough to account for that Week on week rise, much of the boost in Hardware was due to NSMB

V-r0cK (on 23 November 2009)

@ Kenology ...good thing you're just taking about some Sony fans, cuz im a Sony fan and i freakin love NSMB Wii. Nintendo deserves its success its receiving. Great start in sales for this game...i hope itll pass MW2 soon...or eventually =P

Kenology (on 23 November 2009)

Great numbers for an awesome title. Sony fans will always spin Nintendo success negatively because they're programed to do so. But this is a success, no doubt about it. Will be fun to see NSMB Wii outsell Modern Warfare 2 next year. The meltdown will be epic.

huaxiong90 (on 23 November 2009)

I recall some people saying it won't shift hardware.

KillerMan (on 23 November 2009)

Zucas: Remember that Wii had 50$ price drop this year. Impressive sales but not as impressive as last year.

Bladeforce (on 23 November 2009)

Sales of the Wii and DS will be far into the horizon whilst the others battle for the leftovers again

sep85dd (on 23 November 2009)

Can it outsell COD MWF 2? Can it Top Mario Galaxy sales? Maybe! But if it can beat Mario 64 or Mario World sales...i can´t belive that.

Hephaestos (on 23 November 2009)

i'm getting that for christmass... dunno if i give it to my gf to play with her bros and sis in her country or if I keep it.... in case I manage to have my familly play it (it's a mario game, so it's kind of tolerated...). Might just buy 2 of this...

johnsobas (on 23 November 2009)

azelover - so what about december? Wii did 1 million december NPD 2008. It's gonna absolutely crush that number this year. Yea i know it's because it was supply constrained, but that's also one of the reasons the numbers were so high in november.

sep85dd (on 23 November 2009)

What a start, Wow. I get the game tomorrow, so i hope, that it is great.

Gintoki (on 23 November 2009)

YEAH!!

c0rd (on 23 November 2009)

I agree with you, Azelover, though keep in mind this is only the third year. Nintendo still has time to bring sales up. All their main titles this year were "safe" (sequels or proven games). 2010 will be a different story, so it will be interesting to see...

Azelover (on 23 November 2009)

November NPDs will be followed by a lot of doom and gloom from the mainstream media. The Wii sold 2 million last year in November, at 300k a week it's a drastic decrease. Also NSMBWii's initial numbers will be much lower than MW2's, legs probably won't matter to the media initially. Just saying. But also there is the possibility investors have stopped looking for YOY increases. We'll see. From what I've read this definitely isn't good enough. Nobody else is doing better though, so I guess that's a positive way to see it.

Wii_Master (on 23 November 2009)

Also just remembered sumone else in this article before commented about people underestimating reggie and how there might be sumthin coming and thats why he included january i thin that l-jaule or soumeone whatever so yeah Dv8thwonder post made me think maybe they r gonna do a midnight launch for a red wii bundle with wii sports(as usual) and nsmbwii with a tag of 199 and the original bunde witth the white wii and wii sports will drop to 149!!! *dashes out mario style and sells the wii to get the red wii* *realizes that he can't play nsmbwii till then...* *dashes back out mario style with the propeller suit! and goes and buys a black wii and a white wii and then a red wii later on and then stacks them on each other. NSMBWii is played on red wii, black wii for MH3 and Metroid and all other FPS and shotting and white for third party* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wii_Master (on 23 November 2009)

ok why are people posting two times in a row anyway this is just crazy!! ok i expected 500K first week because i say mario games are long time not frontloaded this means that not only id this game sell like a frontloaded title but also like a mario title meaning this makes it easy to see that reggie is gonna win..,.

halogamer1989 (on 22 November 2009)

Good for Ninty.

fuzzykitten3769 (on 22 November 2009)

This game is a great addition to the Wii I'm happy that the sales numbers represent that. Kudos to Nintendo for gracing us once again with a great 2D platformer :)

atma998 (on 22 November 2009)

@Smeags Yeah lol, there will be a lot of sales charts with Wii Sports, Wii Fit Plus, NSMB Wii, Wii Sports Resort and Mario Kart Wii dominating the top 5 in 2010.

Dv8thwonder (on 22 November 2009)

NSMBWii Bundle on the way soon! Crossing everything for a red Wii to match the game.

Smeags (on 22 November 2009)

I sense that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will be another game that people ignore on the sales charts because it'll be in the top 10 for months and months to come. :-D Congrats to a great start, and for being a wonderful game!

Salnax (on 22 November 2009)

Not a bad opening for a game with legs

Sapphire (on 22 November 2009)

I kinda remember a while ago one of the article said one the store (gamestop or others) acclaimed that Nintendo needs to larger space store for the end of the year what would it be?

Zucas (on 22 November 2009)

Yea I think Wii being anywhere close to where it was last year is quite impressive. It has been relatively down all year and with stronger competition this time around and it is still getting similar holiday numbers to last year. Part of it does have to do with ample supply but still a good job for Nintendo.

inu_1607 (on 22 November 2009)

No doubt NSMB Wii will outsell ps3 version of MW2 in january and 360+PS3 before january 2011

Zucas (on 22 November 2009)

Just incredible sales. Nintendo definitely has another hit on their hands.

Avinash_Tyagi (on 22 November 2009)

The seasonal boost should be about 17-20%, so just the seasonal boost should carry Wii to about 650-670K, the rest of the rise will be on NSMB Wii.

Nintendogamer (on 22 November 2009)

@jlauro ahh so Reggie is hinting something, another thing to look forward to :P

jlauro (on 22 November 2009)

Also, it was prior to the release of either game... To be fair, MW2 did about 50% better than many predictions.

darthdevidem01 (on 22 November 2009)

wow if wii can't beat 2008 sales from the same week last year in NSMB Wii week it will be awful I hope it can....for avinash's predictions sake anyway ROFL ROFL ROFL?! GREAT SALES FOR A GREAT GAME!

jlauro (on 22 November 2009)

I think something is coming in January that will boost sales. He says you have to include January sales. There are some people greatly underestimating Reggie. I am not saying he will win the bet (he may), but if it fails, it's going to be a lot closer than some people are giving him credit for.

sonicshuffle (on 22 November 2009)

In america alone? You got high hopes.

Avinash_Tyagi (on 22 November 2009)

@shuffle His prediction was until the end of January and for only one platform, also over the next year or so, NSMB Wii should easily overcome MW2 combined sales

sonicshuffle (on 22 November 2009)

Hey Reggie. What's that I hear? MW2 has sold 10 million units? And NSMB? 1.3? Gee you can always take back what ya said.

Sapphire (on 22 November 2009)

another greatness from Nintendo

Avinash_Tyagi (on 22 November 2009)

Sorry sliver tiger, NSMB is going to crush MW2 in the long run, NSMB just has the legs

Avinash_Tyagi (on 22 November 2009)

Also Reggie's prediction was until the end of January, that's still a while off

Avinash_Tyagi (on 22 November 2009)

Nearly impossible, what are you smoking, let me introduce you to a friend I call Mario Kart Wii

Silver-Tiger (on 22 November 2009)

Oh, I want to add that I'm not a fanboy or anything. Just thinking realistic.

Silver-Tiger (on 22 November 2009)

@Nintendogamer: we are purely talkign about the game sales. The fact remains that he was FAR off the reality. Even if we talk about the long run, I don't think NSMB will outsell the 360 version. maybe the PS3, very possible, but not the 360 version. Look, from the prediction, MW2 will have sold 14 million copies at the end of the year. If we take that 7 million games are 360 versions (which is very favourable for the PS3 version, I don't think the PS3 version sold nearly as much as the 360, you can expect higher number on that one) then NSMB still has to sell nearly 5.5 million copies. to reach the 360 version. Nearly impossible.

ClaudeLv250 (on 22 November 2009)

I love how fanbrats get bent out of shape at Reggie's comment considering that Geoff started the pissing match by asking him which would sell more in the first place. This along with the fact that the bet goes through January tells me that facts and logic aren't being paid much attention. I want to see Mario 'win' just for the meltdowns that will ensue. Haven't seen any good ones since Epic Mickey.

Soriku (on 22 November 2009)

Wow. 700k in JP should give a big boost!.

sully1311 (on 22 November 2009)

great figures! game industry looking on the up!

Gobias (on 22 November 2009)

So wait...it didn't even beat the same week from 2008 in HW? Wow, that's pretty sad.

Nintendogamer (on 22 November 2009)

Anyway I thought he meant in the long-run.

Nintendogamer (on 22 November 2009)

@Silver-tiger so much a douche that MW2 made smaller boost to 360 and PS3 that NSMBwii did to wii ;). He's not that much of a douche. He is the reginator

Silver-Tiger (on 22 November 2009)

so much to beating MW2 on a single platform (Xbox 360), LOL. I did not even beat the PS3 version. Reggie, just keep it quiet next time, unless of course you want to make yourself look like a douche again.

c0rd (on 22 November 2009)

Next week (Black Friday) is going to be massive! Can't wait to see the huge numbers, it's been too long.

binary solo (on 22 November 2009)

Just by way of comparison: WE 23 Nov 2008 Wii Americas sales was 398K; Others sales was 349K; WW was 786K. I'm thinking 2009 will be close to or better than 90% of that target, which is nearly as close as Wii has got to the comparable 2008 week all year. Last week Wii was 14% behind, so if this week it is only 10% behinds I think NSMB Wii would be responsible for that 4% improvement. Probably close to what one would expect for the 3rd purely Mario game in the Wii generation.

Nintendogamer (on 22 November 2009)

If wii sales are very good! consider Wii sales to top 62 million before 2010, topping NES sales and celebrating on xmas day will be epic I wont be able to sleep on Christmas eve, I will play my wii throughout.

papflesje (on 22 November 2009)

DANG, the Wii sales are going to be something else when they come in for that week O_O

SaviorX (on 22 November 2009)

Kind of close to what I predicted it would do first week. JP- 621k NA- 846k EU/O- 353k 1.82 million may seem tame in comparison to Modern Warfare 2, but it is an amazing debut for a title that will consistently sell dozens of thousands a week for an extended period of time.

elmerion (on 22 November 2009)

Great, great news!! i cant why to try this game, lets hope it goes beyond 15 million

Nintendogamer (on 22 November 2009)

Could Wii sales be over 700,000 in the week ending 21st and 28th November?

Nintendogamer (on 22 November 2009)

300,000 in USA alone? must be, can't be just that worldwide.

binary solo (on 22 November 2009)

Great result. For the hardware lift I'd say if Wii HW goes above the same week from 2008 then they have NSMB Wii to thank for it. If it stays below the 2008 sales then the vast bulk of the lift from the previous week will be due to typical seasonal weekly increases from here on in, with NSMB Wiii contributing only a small % of the total HW sales increase.

Nintendogamer (on 22 November 2009)

Truly deserves it, what a remarkable game, Great graphics great fun factort, and multiplayer. just what we've been waiting for since Super mario world back in 1990, 19 years ago! or is it?
