2009 Year on Year Sales and Market Share Update to Nov 14th

by Brent Williams, posted on 19 November 2009 / 3,010 Views

Here we see data representing the global sales through to consumers, and change in sales performance, of the three home consoles over comparable periods for 2007, 2008 and 2009.  Also shown is the market share for each of the consoles over the same periods.

yoy ytd 14.11.09

Much like last week the sales of all three home consoles increased this week.  The Wii is up 17%, the PS3 up 15% and the 360 up 12%.  The boost for the Wii and PS3 is the usual seasonal bump. However, the increase for the 360 is harder to pin down as there may have been a bump due to the official and Modern Warfare 2 bundle.  If the 360 bump is because of the MW2 bundle then any further seasonal boost next week may be negated and the sales couild remain flat.

The PS3 does even better this week than last, up 52% on this week last year.  The PS3 is now up Year on year - year to date by a reasonable 9%.

The Wii continues its 2009 trend of being down on the 2008 figure, again this week it is down around 14% based on the corresponding week last year and exactly 20% in the year on year - year to date totals, 3.3million less sold this year.

The 360 undersells the corresponding 2008 week sales just by around 4% but still it manages to show an improvement in 2009 over 2008 totals for the year to date although that will likely change in the next two weeks.

It is an interesting time and in 2008 over the next two weeks we saw the Wii achieve 2.1m sales, the 360 1.1m and the PS3 0.64m.  It wont be difficult for the PS3 to better those moderate sales of 2008, but the 360 and particularly the Wii will surely be down.

@javierdacosta and rsbkeekilla not only that but its only market share for the year to date for all the individual years shown....

rsbkeekilla (on 20 November 2009)

@ javierdacosta It is simply referring to the market share for that year, not all sales combined. So in 2009, Sony has a bigger market share then the 360 because it has sold more consoles

javierdacosta (on 20 November 2009)

I don't get the market share part... when I look at those numbers it seems like the ps3 has a larger installed base than the 360, could you explain how you are measuring that. Thnaks

PS3 peak in 09? 360 & Wii in 08?

gurglesletch (on 20 November 2009)

just 3 months ago the ps3 was negative. What a huge change.

kowenicki (on 20 November 2009)

@baalzamon or you could just install both discs to the 360 and run the game quiter than on the PS3 and with faster loading times.... you are just trolling and your reasoning is rather simplisitc.

I think you've got to look as the US sales for 360 to put this week's 360 sales in context: It is down by 8%. That drop is entirely due to the US coming off the Walmart (& Amazon?) deals. Obviously without MW2 the drop would have been larger. What you need to consider is how long of a sales dampening effect will the $100 gift card have? I think it's a one week downer following the upper. So I think US 360 numbers will substantially up next week. At least back to the Walmart week level. Outside USA there seems to be a combination of MW2 and seasonal lift. Seasonal lift will continue and will negate any MW2 drop except maybe in those markets that saw massive 360 increases like UK. I'm thinking the USA will lead an increase, the rest of the world will have a small lift with individual markets having a bit of a dip. 360 does have a big hill to climb for YOY comparison, with 360 selling >400K WE 22 Nov 2008. It should get into the 300Ks, but the high 300ks I dunno,

Baalzamon (on 20 November 2009)

My mind is officially made up, the ps3 will pass the 360 ww sales before the end of 2012...we finally have a game coming out that has been hinted that will require 2 disks on the 360 and only 1 on the ps3...and that is a pain in the butt for some people (other than they won't have to listen to the loud dvd drive when they are switching)...by the way, the game is final fantasy xiii...http://www.product-reviews.net/2009/03/31/ps3s-final-fantasy-xiii-will-use-100-of-power-xbox-360-drools/ read it

@Boberman, eh, I don't see it in the black yet, it still is losing money per console which makes it very difficult to hit black, but maybe a possibility.

Boberman (on 20 November 2009)

@heruamon Your crazy to think Sony Networking(PS3) division is going to lose $500 this Quarter. Its Christmas time so it probably will be in the black.

NSMB Wii for America/Others next week, then Black Friday the week after. The crucial period is coming up!

@heruamon: the 360 had the same price cut...the elite went from $399 to $299, people need to stop calling it a swap and calling it the price cut it was. I'm going to say the 120 gb ps3 just replaced the 80 gb model from before, it didn't actually have a price cut. And Sony is doing fine, and they will do just fine next year.

"slornie says: Even considering the boost given to the Xbox from WalMart's deal in the USA, it was still behind the PS3 globally. When that expires, i think we'll see how poor the Xbox is doing, even during this holiday season." LOL...the Xbox is doing poorly...but it's up YoY...and making money, where as the PS3 in nice amount 9%, but it had a $100 price cut, and a multi-million redesign...interesting. It's going to be interesting to see what the 10-Q's have to say from this qtr. Loss of another $500 million?

slornie (on 19 November 2009)

Even considering the boost given to the Xbox from WalMart's deal in the USA, it was still behind the PS3 globally. When that expires, i think we'll see how poor the Xbox is doing, even during this holiday season.

go modern warfare2!!

haxxiy (on 19 November 2009)

Interesting. I'm rather impressed Wii still tracking below 2008 by that ammount (14%).

@darth they were poor(ish). some perspective... 360 sales arent exactly on fire at the moment (some ps3 fans might even say there were poor) but over the last 3 weeks it has sold 717,000.... the ps3 over the same period last year sold 640,000 or 12% down on the 360's this year. Anyway... its only a word.

BHR-3 (on 19 November 2009)

yeah boy ps3 up in all cats. up there ps3 sales will monstrous next year aswell

darthdevidem01 (on 19 November 2009)

stop calling PS3 sales "poor" in 2008 they weren't great but "poor" isn't the word
