Crackdown 2 will feature 4 player co-op / 16 player Multiplayer

New details have surfaced for the upcoming highly anticipated sequel to the Crackdown franchise. According to the official Xbox.com listing, the co-op and multiplayer elements will be expanded significantly - the first Crackdown only had 2 player co-op and no multiplayer. Crackdown 2 will now have 4 player co-op and a multiplayer mode for up to 16 players.

The original Crackdown had a great open world city ripe for multiplayer so fans of the series will see this as great news. It is interesting how this will play alongside APB (a crime fighting MMO due 2010), which is being developed by RealTime Worlds from where Ruffian Games originated from. My guess is that Crackdown 2's multiplayer will follow similar concepts to APB in terms of a Cops vs Robbers mode along with a standard Cops deathmatch.

Here is the excerpt from the Xbox.com gamepage:

The sequel to the award-winning vertical-world adventure, Crackdown 2 is the ultimate open-ended world action experience, only available on Xbox 360®. The game lets you be judge, jury, and executioner for a huge, fully explorable city. Crackdown 2 takes multiplayer gaming to unprecedented levels for the ultimate co-op and competitive multiplayer experience, providing you and your friends with the complete freedom to explore, destroy, and play your way as you restore justice and peace to Pacific City—by any means necessary.

Crackdown 2 is due to arrive sometime in 2010 and was an unexpected reveal at E3 2009.

What will be cool is if there is a persistent city players can jump in and out of, with a bit of Call of Duty 4 leveling up and so on. Have different points in the city you can control that give your faction certain advantages also. They do this, they will be onto something. I had fun with Crackdown, and am really enjoying inFAMOUS now. Will need to keep eyes open on this, to see how it pans out. Also hope they do add a bit stronger narrative for the game, or at least more diversity in the sandbox. I would be interested in having businesses controlled to give a faction revenue and so on.

The E3 trailer talks about the 'infected' and there is a shadow of a big monster like creature at the end. I wouldnt be surprised if a Horde style mode surfaces. :)

DOLBY: The original creators of Crackdown ARE working on this game. Ruffian games, the people making CD2 are entirely formed from RealTimeWorlds, the creators of Crackdown. The only difference is that David Jones isn't heading the project up. coolbeans: Crackdown 1 was built for the co-op campaign. It kind of hearkens back to the days of beat'em ups from the NES days.

Multiplayer was sorely lacking from the first game. I hope they beef up the single player element as well for the sequel.

@mrstickball, No haven't played Crackdown but it seemed to have an interesting narrative. I guess I'm also kind-of ragging on hearing other original SP games now turn to SP/MP like Bioshock 2 and Uncharted 2 (beta was fairly good but it still needs some work)

The original creators of Crackdown are NOT working on this game so I am a little unsure about this one. My guess is they will just copy and paste from other games but hopefully they will actually do a good job.

Oh wow 4 player co op. I had tons of fun with just 2 players. I can't wait to play this game. And a good multiplayer. Wow.

Thanks for correcting mistakes - such as not posting a picture and setting it as MS news. Will remember next time :)

coolbeans, did you ever play Crackdown? The narrative in Crackdown was NOT very strong. Actually, it was non-existent. The entire focus of the game was having leveling up to god-like status and wrecking the city. From what I heard, 2 player was fantastic, and I can absolutely vouch for the fact that CD was fantastic. If it does include 4 player offline co-op...Wow. That's gonna be a game for the ages.

Sounds epic, but I'm still getting tired of seeing SP-immerse stories get multiplayer. Makes it seem like every game needs to have it these days and it gets rather annoying.
