Best Narrative of 2015 - Article

by Joseph Trotter , posted on 08 January 2016 / 5,188 Views

The quality of narratives within games, spearheaded by the box-office success of narrative-driven adventure specialists Telltale Games, have come on leaps and bounds in the past few years. Telltale itself may feel hard done by to not find the fantastic Tales from the Borderlands on this list, but this is testament to the sheer number of quality narratives on offer in 2015. From the blockbuster madness of The Phantom Pain to the breathtakingly evocative Ori and the gripping Life is Strange, each nominee listed below presented a storyline that really propelled the game in question to new heights.

The Nominees:

Life is Strange

The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

Ori and the Blind Forest

Ori and the Blind Forest

Undertale

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Rise of the Tomb Raider

And the Winner is...

Ori and the Blind Forest

Community's Choice - The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (20% of the vote)

A beautiful game, with a charming and emotional story, not to mention fun platforming and action, Ori and the Blind Forest endeared all those lucky enough to play it. Victorious in a ferociously fought category, Ori not only has a great narrative and one of the strongest, most impactful openings of any video game, but is a fantastic game in its own right. Ori and the Blind Forest is our pick for Best Narrative of 2015.

Although it wasn't nominated, SOMA has the best narrative I've ever seen in gaming.

Don't usually disagree with these things but I think Life Is Strange has got a much better narrative than all of them easily. But the that's life ey?! It's very strange! :)
I'm being serious though... It's better.

How many awards has Ori walked away with by now? Jeez. And Xbotx bitch about Indie-station 4 when the best Xbox One game is an indie!

Narrative? Sure, the opening is touching and heartbreaking - but the story kinda loses it after that. And yes, I do own it for my X1. I'd go Rise after Ori. The story continues to unravel as you play with plenty of twists and turns.

Nice - I always felt that Ori... is a bit forgotten in all kinds of 2015 polls due to an early launch!?

The first 10 minutes of Ori are incredible, but, the way Undertales breaks the fourth wall, the way Her Story deconstruct its story to transform it into an ambiguous wonderfull puzzle or the extremely intimate and modern story (heavily inspired on the best indie american cinema) that Life is Strange developes look way more impressive to me that Ori after the first 10 minutes, also Tales of Borderlands should at the very least be nominated, I mean... MGS5, really? That game is plenty of embarrasing moments on its narrative.

One of the best games ever IMO. The intro is fantastic and it maintains the story in a very inclusive way during the game itself.

It's on Steam and XBox One. If you finished DKC Tropical Freeze then there is a chance to beat this game ;-) Nevertheless you will die countless times :P The music and atmosphere is a class of it's own. Give it a try.
