Rare Bringing 'Historic' Franchise to the Xbox One, Reveal at E3

Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer has told Polygon that Rare will be bringing back an "historic" franchise for the Xbox One. The game will be shown at E3 this year and Spencer believes it will be important for the Xbox One's success.

"Fans of Rare and Rare IP I think will be pleased with what we're going to show at E3," said Spencer. "We had a limited amount of time today and a lot of story to tell. But Rare remains an incredibly important part of our development capability. That historic IP that they've built I think can play a real important role on Xbox One."

Microsoft purchased Rare 11 years ago and Microsoft gained the rights to Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, Killer Instinct, and Perfect Dark. Rare did release a Perfect Dark and Banjo-Kazooie title on the Xbox 360. Microsoft did renew the Killer Instinct trademark in September 2012.

Battletoads, y'all. Battletoads.

There is some hope here. I mean Banjo and Perfect Dark were crap, but Conker: Live and Reloaded for the original XB was amazing. Microsoft likes to publish a fighting game exclusive near launch (DoA4 for 360, and another DoA for XB), so maybe this will be Killer Instinct.

well-the fact why banjo and perfect dark on 360 were crap but conqer wasn't:conqer was just an HD port of an existing good game, but the other games were newly developed.

Perfect Dark Zero had the worst controls I have ever played in a FPS. It would be nice to get a stealth game like Perfect Dark with decent gameplay improvements.

I am hoping it is either Banjo-Kazooie (probably Rare's most successful original IP) or Perfect Dark. I can't see them reviving Killer Instinct... or at least doing it well after all this time despite the revival of fighting games restricted to the 2D plane.

$100 million waste of investment is what Rare is to Microsoft. 3 games released in 12 years since it was bought by MS: Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Kameo and Perfect Dark. Rare have all these rumoured sequels in the pipeline that do not even exist.

You are forgetting Viva Pinata and Kinect Sports. Of course, I wish they focused on core games.

Actually they also released a Conker remake, a bad sequel to Banjo-Kazooie, 2 Viva Pinata games and Kinetic Sports. They have made games just none of them reached the heights of their N64 and SNES era products.

It better be one of their actual properties. If they shit all over KI as a crappy Xbox exclusive, fuck 'em.

ironmanDX (on 22 May 2013)

Oh look, another game that doesn't exist...

ktay95 (on 22 May 2013)

I want Jet Force Gemini, Conker or Banjo... and it has to be better than the bullshit that the Rare IPs have been on MS consoles

Bruxel (on 22 May 2013)
