SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL SMASHES NINTENDO SALES RECORDS - News

Wii Game Sells at a Rate of More than 120 per Minute

REDMOND, Wash., March 17, 2008 – After just one week on store shelves, Super Smash Bros.® Brawl for Wii has become the fastest-selling video game in Nintendo of America's history. Since its launch on March 9, the feature-packed fighting action game has sold more than 1.4 million units in the United States, including more than 874,000 on March 9 alone. It has sold at a rate of more than 120 units per minute between launch and March 16.

"Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural phenomenon," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Game reviewers and the public alike praise its fun game play and extensive, inventive content."

Super Smash Bros. Brawl features a nearly limitless variety of options for players. Dozens of classic Nintendo characters like Mario™ and Pikachu® are joined by industry icons like Sonic The Hedgehog™ and Metal Gear's Solid Snake for all-out four-player battles. The endless customization keeps players coming back for more. The previous game in the series, Super Smash Bros.® Melee, became the best-selling Nintendo GameCube™ game of all time with more than 7 million copies sold worldwide, so it's no surprise to see this latest installment racking up record numbers.

"It's important to remember," Dunaway said, "that we have lots more fun on the way: Upcoming titles like Mario Kart® Wii and Wii Fit™ will keep our momentum going strong."

Mario Kart Wii launches April 27 with the Wii Wheel™, which lets players drive their speedy karts with the intuitive feel of a wireless steering wheel. It's another "bridge" game like Wii Sports™ that lets video game novices and veterans play and have fun together. Wii Fit arrives May 19 with the Wii Balance Board™ to combine fun and fitness. It lets users track their progress over time, and it's an easy way for every member of the family to keep active and play together.

And people still try to work in underhanded insults to Nintendo in their faux compliments. Can't people just be happy for someone's success?

In the end it may just be that the 360 functions more efficiently as a software selling factory given its core appeal to the highest buying consumer base: 15-25 year old males. Great games will sell more on the 360, Good games will sell more on the 360, Mediocre games will sell more on the 360 and Bad games will sell more on the 360. Its a console which has established a mentality where the "game-a-week" consumer is on the hunt for the next game for it, and anything with name recognition is a shoe in. That's not to belittle the 360, just something to envy it for.

I guess when Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, MGS4, FFXIII, Gran Turismo5 all come out we'll have to Halo3 as well. If they outdo Halo3, make sure the champaigne is ready. If they don't, make sure to memorize a good list of excuses.

Though honestly, SSBB's comparison to Halo3 is partly if not mostly to blame on the handful of overzealous Nintendo supporters who feel the constant desire to play John Lucas and make outrageous public declarations and bets which given Nintendo's inconsistant sales and product supply this generaiton is just unwise and reckless.

When your console is on the grow from its lowest generation ever, suffering from supply problems, growing pains and an already established track record of unpredictability in software sales, it might benefit you to keep a low profile and celebrate afterwards when its warranted. It helps avoid situations like this. Though in all fairness to say people wouldn't compare SSBB to Halo3 regardless is just foolish too.

Yeah...great sale, but it didn't top Halo 3, but that's right...Halo 3 was HYPED...and SSBB wasn't...roflol. Oh well, there a difference standard for 360 than everybody else.

Agrees with Goddbless more than with NekoSOM. Halo3 is at 7.5M, and while dead in Japan, and a crawl in Other, which still helps, it is moving along well in NA, doing .5M since Christmas.
If it has 3 more years in it plus holiday sales, I think it could make 10M.

SSBB really had little chance to overcome Halo3 in NA. The NA X360 > NA Wii and as pointed out, the X360 players are much more oriented to buy a game like Halo3 than the percentage of Wii buyers.

A better showdown will be in Other. Wii is already 1.5M more than X360 there, and Halo3 sales % of total Other X360 was less than in NA X360. While it's quite unlikely that Other would sell the 1.2M+ needed to overcome the total Halo3 sales in its first week, it perhaps possible to sell the 900k needed to sell more than Other Halo3 did in its first week.

great to see SSBB doing so great

Goddbless (on 18 March 2008)

@ NekoSOM

I love your false facts. Last time I checked Halo 3 was still charting in the top 50 almost every week in NA. This week it's at #24! It will also continue to sell until the next Halo game comes out. Plus you have to take into consideration there are a lot of great games other than Halo 3 on the 360 right now. Also the Halo 3 total is 8ish not 7ish and much closer to 10 million already.

Why is it that people can't just be happy for the success of the game without comparing it to Halo 3?

Nazna : take in account that Halo had nothing from Japan , and not much from Europe .

Still , damn this is impressive :D Nintendo did great :)

Taxman: Well.. not totally accurate. There are motion controls. The wiimote+nunchuck has motion options that you can turn on. Which I DID.. which I really love having. It makes getting a smash attack off very dependable and MUCH easier to smash to the left, then to the right, to help clear out an area of foes quickly. And personally, I MUCH prefer the wiimote+nunchuck to the GC controller for a great many reasons. And I do not believe the game was 'optimized' in any way shape or form for a particular controller, in that, all of the schemes work fine for the controller you prefer.

Nintendo is truly coming into its own this generation. And they're not even doing anything different game-wise than they were last gen with the Gamecube. They just got Wii popular in the mainstream, and now people suddenly like Smash Bros. and Super Mario. It's quite sad really, but very good strategy on Nintendo's part.

  • 0
scydrex (on 18 March 2008)

Just to answer my own question, the short answer is no.
Super Mario 64 was the best-selling game of its generation (Saturn, PS, N64), but it did not belong to the best-selling platform at the time.

I'm sorry for everyone is comaprin' Halo 3 sales with SSBB in North America especially in the USA!! you know why Halo is a pure american emblem in the gamin'g world!!! not like a Super Smash!!!! Super Smash is a Nintendo Planet Emblem!!! only SSB and Melee 100 % beaters can understand!!!! that's why startin' with a 1.5 million is real success!! the Nintendo franchise sales had this magic to keep lastin' in future!!!!

NekoSOM (on 18 March 2008)

Haha, I knew people would try to compare it to Halo 3. The two are completely incomparable, for multiple reasons. Firstly, the 360 has a far more dedicated fanbase, and considering most people bought the 360 exclusively for Halo 3 should it be surprising it sold so much in the first week? Secondly, Halo is a US phenonenon, whereas Super Smash Brothers is a worldwide phenomenon. As someone already pointed out, Smash Brother's worldwide total will be comparable to Halos' in the first week. Then finally, I think people forget the legs Melee had it on it. If I'm not mistaken, it was a top 10 selling Gamecube game throughout the entire lifetime of the system. The last game had a staying power that amazed many. I'd fathom with the much higher userbase of the Wii, coupled with a more casual audience, will increase that likelihood. Halo 3, on the other hand practically fell off the charts after the first month or so. Fact is, everyone who wanted it bought it in the first week.

Just to summarize, you can't compare hardcore-centric to casual-centric games. Their sales trends are completely different. But I will tell you this: 1.5 million games sold in the first week for a game like Brawl guarantees it will be one of the best selling games of all time. None of the Halo games can claim that, hyped as they are. This game will easily reach 10 million (which, btw, none of the Halo games have been able to reach, and Halo 3, at 7 million-ish, will likely never sniff that number either). If Nintendo can take Wii sales to the next level, it might even reach Pokemon-like numbers...but that's a tall order.

FaRmLaNd (on 18 March 2008)

Brawl will most likely outsell halo 3 in the long run but there's no denying that halo 3's first week was extremely well orchestrated by Microsoft considering the smaller userbase at the time of its release. I do think many people count out halo 3 too quickly in regards to its sales, it has outsold halo 2 in 2 regions out of 3 so I wouldn't be surprised if it outsells halo 2 in the long run. Furthermore it will be difficult for any game to catch up to it. Its not a battle that will be won in a single week like some people seem to think it will.

My own speculations about the long haul agree with you, Zen.

The game simply appeals to a much wider audience. You like fast-paced fighting action? Got it. You want online matchups? They're there as well. (Still hate the friend codes implementation, though). And it has something no other game out there has right now, which is to bring a nice sense of nostalgia as you play the characters, listen to the music and play in your favorite stages from games past.

The death-match shooter genre can be loads of fun, but it definitely is geared towards a much narrower demographic. However, this demographic (young male hardcore gamers) happens to be the one that normally spends the most money on games, so that could even the competition a bit.

This creates a question I had not given any thought to before. Perhaps the answer is obvious and I'm too dumb to know it. Is the best-selling game on the best-selling console in any given generation also the best-selling game for that generation (across all platforms)? If the answer is always yes, then that certainly bodes well for Brawl surpassing all other current-gen games.

What!? 9000!?

Great numbers for Brawl.

Also, at goddog, I think it will come pretty close to Halo 3 worldwide, and I certainly think it will outsell Halo 3 over the longhaul. Disagree?

  • 0
goddog (on 17 March 2008)

@Onimusha12 , how have you not seen a brawl commercial I cant turn on the tv without seeing one about every 15 minutes. adultswim, comedy central, history channel, tnt, the other channel L&O is on, even on freaking CNN.

Now I will Say It does not even come close to halo 3 with its own soda and burger, but dont act like they didnt push it, picked up any gaming mags? 3 page spreads for the game

also i really wish theyd get a new tagline or just have a few with out that "wii would like to play with you" in it

JaggedSac (on 17 March 2008)

Nice all caps post. Nice numbers. Not nearly as much as Halo 3's but good none the less. And I doubt that the money generated off this game will be anywhere near Halo's. I mean they were selling 100 dollar versions of the game. And they were selling out of them. The game budget wasnt nearly as big as you guys make it seem. Bungie even said it was a fraction of the cost of Hollywood movies. Hopefully there will be enough people that play online in SSB and the online infrastructure is good enough to provide decent play.

  • 0

Simply amazing. It's a shame it couldn't top Halo 3, but all in all those are pretty satisfying numbers. I'm sure Sakurai (IIRC) and HAL are jumping for joy.

I'd say a game breaking a Nintendo sales record is fairly significant. Take a glance at the top-selling games of all time, and you'll see an awful lot of Nintendo in the top 100 entries of the list... A game breaking Nintendo's first-week sales record is big news.

  • 0
DMeisterJ (on 17 March 2008)

@ Onimusha 12

No bitterness.

SSBB did excellently.

I was just saying that it hadn't dethroned Halo 3 as the top game. So I failed to see why FJ made the title all caps.

But nothing against SSBB and the Wii, they've both done great this week.

  • 0
naznatips (on 17 March 2008)

Halo 3 launched to about 3.8 million units first week worldwide.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl now has about 2.5 million first week worldwide, and should end around 3.25-3.5 million worldwide with Others.

So no, it won't topple Halo 3, but it will do damn good for tiself.

  • 0
Onimusha12 (on 17 March 2008)

that's a good point PearlJammer, but still food for thought to think how the outcome for Nintendo may have differed considering the Wii is forging new ground with a much larger (and new) audience than its predicessor.

  • 0
pearljammer (on 17 March 2008)

Onmusha
I'm not entirely sure Halo 3 HAD to be advertised for months with a huge budget to eclipse SSBB. I'm not trying to take anything from Brawl, just being fair to both. I mean 2.8m is still double what brawl did.

I've also seen the brawl commercial at least 7 times. While that doesn't compare to the likely 20 times I'd seen the Halo 3 one, it certainly wouldn't account for another 1.4m.

  • 0

Impressive, but nowhere close to Halo 3 sales.

  • 0
taxman (on 17 March 2008)

I played the game and i found it very fun even on single player. However, don't you think is ironic that the best selling game for the Wii doesn't have any motion controls and is optimized to be played with the wired GC controller? I mean i had to dust me old controller and bring the wii closer to plug it in, very retro i must say...

It just shows that motion controls and a new controller design can only get you so far...

erikers, it's people like you that sends people like you from the site. you seriously are annoying.

anyone, is he really popular on the site?

  • 0
Onimusha12 (on 17 March 2008)

DMeisterJ, thx, Ajax and erikers... could you four be anymore bitter? Please take the petty Nintendo contempt somewhere else.

@Erikers, Nintendo has a bad habit of underestimating sales, they play it safe. ioi has proved them to underpredict time and time again. Stop trying to use this as a vehicle to convince yourself the games and consoles you support are actually doing better than the numbers here reflect. I don't know why you're trying to use ioi's alleged overtracking Nintendo to support your theory that Sony and MS are undertracked weekly on this site.

  • In reflection of the game not oudoing Halo3 -

Halo3 had to be advertised over several months at an expense which dwarfed most Motion Picture advertising budgets.

SSBB did this without any significant advertising. Hell I've not even seen one commercial for the game. Imagine if Nintendo had advertised this game to the same extent as Halo3. Imagine if they actually had the Wii's and Game Disc's to support that kind of demand.

  • 0
daactualfact (on 17 March 2008)

ajax, what is your popularity on the site? once you answer that question, use that answer to answer this:

Does anyone care what you think?

  • 0
naznatips (on 17 March 2008)

ioi was about 25% high (NoA doesn't include Canada), so not perfect, but hardly the end of the world. Pretty good. Net first week profit will probably be signifficantly higher than Halo 3 when you consider the difference in dev costs and advertising budget. Surely Nintendo couldn't be happier.

  • 0
daactualfact (on 17 March 2008)

People like erikers, dmeisterj, and thx only lead me to believe that they are expressing pure jeolusy! it's practically obvious! but, if it was a game on 360 or ps3, you guys would spread the word to the whole damn site!

  • 0
celine (on 17 March 2008)

What is really interesting in this PR piece is that they ( Nintendo ) revealed the final shipment figure for Smash Bros Meele : over 7 million copies on a userbase of 21 million ( 33%).

How many copies do you think Brwl will sign on next NPD month ( or even VGChartz)?

  • 0
Zucas (on 17 March 2008)

First of all Erikers shutup, no one ever wants to hear what you say.

Secondly about 900k in USA first day, plus about 100k first day in rest of NA would make ioi's 1.25 million estimate pretty damn close to the real thing.

Overall about 1.5 million for first week is pretty damn good. Now remember these are Nintendo's estimates for first day and first week sales, meaning who really knows if they are 100% accurate. I'm gonna say though that a good first week estimate for NA Brawl sales is good anywhere between 1.4-1.8 million.

  • 0
Ajax (on 17 March 2008)

this is a commercial, a pure pr statement, also pointing at mario kart and wiifit

strange that vg chartz copies this and posts it without any comment

  • 0
FilaBrasileiro (on 17 March 2008)

Holy shit, that's insane.....

  • 0
erikers (on 17 March 2008)

This is why ioi shouldn't make any statements like "smash bros sells over 1.25 million on the first day!" because every time the real numbers come out they end up being substantially different. Of course if nintendo hadn't released this by the end of the month I bet the numbers would have been off by more than 600k easily just like COD 4 was for consecutive months.

Good thing nintendo saved the site from some more "the numbers are never right" criticism for at least one game.

Try not to delete this again as it's not bashing it's just my feelings on the matter. Moderate people who actually troll the site for a change. thanks!

I don't know, I tried it at Gamespot and I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about. It must be a lot more fun when you know your way around because in a couple minutes play it was far too simplistic and rather boring and backgrounds didn't look very good (unless they moved some pretty impressive animations)

Nontheless congrats nice to see a non-FPS so successful.

I'm surprised at those comments. This number (for first day) is lower than what ioi suggested even if we add 10% for Canada. However no number for 1st week was given but general consensus was that it will be close to 2 mln. So 1.4 (or a little more than 1.5 mln with Canada) isn't that impressive. I was actually expecting more.

A Super Smash from Super Smash Bros Brawl ... Go Nintendo GOOOOOOOOO!!
Jap sales are more than 1.5 million + the NoA sales it's all about to hit the half Super Smash Bros Melee sales!! in on ten weeks from it's first release without the Other ( Europe ) release this game is about the Ten Millions for sure there's no doubt!!!

At least the X360 have something to rejoice about, SSBB not selling better than Halo 3 on week one. However, if the game has any decent legs at all (I'm predicting it'll have massive ones) it should surpass its lifetime sales at some point this year.

Let's see if GTA IV does even better than this
