Taito originally released Estpolis Denki for the Super Famicom in June 1993. A North American Super Nintendo release followed later that year under the name Lufia & the Fortress of Doom.
According to Famitsu.com, the new game, to be titled Estpolis, is being produced by the same development staff as the original. Square Enix, which now owns Taito, will be serving as publisher.
Aside from that, the site provides no information on the game -- including a platform and release time frame.

My Bet is that game will be released on DS after seeing the size of that first art screen.

Were there more than two Lufia games? Anyway, I really enjoyed Lufia 2 - I played it twice. The firs Lufia was fairly decent for its time, but I couldn't get back into it once FF6, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and Mario RPG rolled around.
OH MY GOD!!! girly scream!!!
Lufia is by FAR my favorite series and Lufia 2 is my favorite game of all-time (I cry every single time I see the ending, even after 20+ times!!).
And if it's on DS and in a similar 2d-style + gameplay style as Lufia 2, I'll be in complete heaven!!
Lufia 2's gameplay is unparalleled in RPG's. The puzzles were extremely intelligent and they were found everywhere. The "see the monster, can use item to stop them" is the best encounter system ever.
The music is pure bliss and the characters are engaging and pretty deep for their time! I mean, who doesn't love Dekar or Aguro? Selan is the perfect wife (what other rpg make your hero have his wedding in the middle of the game? :P), and the love triangle with Tia is heart-breaking!
The only thing I wish is that they come back to the "real" series (being 1 & 2) since the Game Boy Color game was just ok and the GBA one was pretty bad...
Man I loved the first two Lufia's. And for their time the stories were incredible. I hope this either on Wii or the DS because I will definetly be getting it. Hell regardless of the console I will be getting it. One of my favorite RPG series ever. I didn't get the chance to play the Game Boy version though.
More DS fuel, yeah!
xbox/ps3 or no purchase from me.
It will pretty much that it will be on DS. If not then it probably be only on PS3 and 360 (as usual with so many well known titles not being on Wii).
I agree that it's most likely going to be on DS but I wish it was on the Wii. There is no way they'd risk releasing it on an HD console unless MS paid for 1 year exclusivity.
Always the DS... Come on Wii need more RPG's.. there are enough on the DS already :-)
whoa lufia 2 is my favorite rpg this better come out west!!
My bet is definitely on the DS. It's the most RPG-laden system EVER :)
more square-enix/taito goodness on the DS. count me in!
now wheres blood of bahamut??
Almost definitely on DS which is fine since that platform works well for the old school jrpg design. Good to see some classics getting attention.
wow, didn't expect to see this.
i hope this if for ps3/360 otherwise it's gonna be ass. I want more real next gen jrpgs.
Most likely DS
This will be cool.
@OP,
I think you might be right about the game being on the portables, PSP or DS. The last game that was developed in the Lufia series was Lufia: The Ruins of Lore for the GBA back in 2003.
In anticipation of this, PLEASE put the originals on virtual console. My copy of Lufia was lost many years ago.
Awesome! Would love to see this on the PS3, but a DS version is better than nothing at all. Bring it to the U.S.!
Well I guess this will be released on DS. Can't wait to play this game. The first Lufia on SNES was a masterpiece. Go Taito!
my bet is DS aswell, seeing has how they've been supporting it the past couple of months/years. If not for a Handheld i could see ps3/xbox360 (very unlikely), god forbid square enix put a good game on the Wii for once.
WOOOHOOOO, my favourite series of all time is getting a new release!!! thank you S-E!!!!! :DDD
Oh no not a handheld RPG again. Hopefully PS3 but it dont look that way. I know a bunch of Games square enix could have released on a home console. Like in hte glorious Snes Days it was Squares strongest Generation when it comes to quality. Lufia, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore,Lufia, Chrono Trigger, Terranigma. All those games with Sequels on a Home Console that would be fantastic.
Well i gotta say, i did NOT see this coming.
Lufia and Lufia 2 are some of my favorite SNES RPGs so i am pretty psyched about this announcement
That's big news. Lufia is definitely one of those cult classics that will make a lot of SNES RPG fans happy. Though I doubt it will translate into a large amount of RPG sales outside of Japan.
Also, I'm 90% sure it'll be on DS.
Whoa, cool.
Square Enix name on Lufia now, eh?
i loved lufia 2: rise of the sinistrals
the thing i remember the most about it is the soundtrack, it had a kick-ass boss battle music!
OMG
DS please...
What hunter_alien said.
EIther DS or PSP... its a way to small IP, and these are the only systems that can guarantee some decent sales...
Maybe we'll get these games on the VC now.
lol i remember this game
What platform is this sequel for
Dekar is pleased.
i remember this one of the games that was graphically amazing back in the SNES days.
thats probably the only thing i remember its been quite long.
Hell yes!
