PS5 Price to Increase in Europe, UK, Japan, China, Australia, Mexico, Canada, and More - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 25 August 2022 / 15,975 ViewsSony Interactive Entertainment announced it will be increasing the price of the PlayStation 5 in select markets. The price of the PS5 will be more expensive in Europe, UK, Japan, China, Australia, Mexico, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam.
"The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing," said Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan. "We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries. Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada. There will be no price increase in the United States."
He added, "While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business, our top priority continues to be improving the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience everything that PS5 offers and what’s still to come."

Pure greed.
Is that like with Tesla where Elon always talks about how they have to increase the prices because of worse market conditions and some months later they mention record breaking profits and margins? Lol
"People didn't complain about the games being more expensive so, hey, why not increasing the price of the console too?"
I didn't plan to buy the ps5 anyway but it feels good to have another confirmation about that decision once again.
Price increase and 9 gaas on the way. Pricing way to high just puts the have nots farther behind
places they have a grip on the console market. no increase in us, where sales are equal., sad!
No increase in the region with the strongest currency. what happened is all other major currecies fell below parity with the us dollar to the greatest extent in 20 years. the price increases for each region is in line with the new exchange rate.
just asking, but Japan and Canada?
the yen is at its weakest pint next to the us dollar in over 20 years yes. not only that but look up the price conversion of the new yen price to us dollars.
The price increases aren't in line with the new exchange rates in Australia the old PS5 price was already US $14.00 above the US retail using todays rates and our inflation rate is one of the lowest in the OECD
Poor form Sony. Prices should go down, not up.
Before people jump to conclusions... I do understand why, but I don't have to enjoy the impact it has upon the consumer which I put first. Consumers come first.
Happy I got mine on release for launch price, same with the Series X.
Feel for those who couldn't get the console at the lower price though.
Its playstation people will get 2 jobs just to get it.
599 US dollars!
Amazing. Hopefully Xbox and Nintendo don't follow suit and use this as a way to take advantage of the situation.
Sony likely didn't increase the price in the U.S but in every other region cause Sony knows how competitive Microsoft is against them in the U.S and likely would rather take a hit in the U.S in order to not let Microsoft take a dominant lead in the U.S. In the other regions however Sony knows how dominant they are and didn't think that a price hike in those regions will change the fact that they'll still have a comfortable lead over Microsoft.
Sony is not nearly as dominant as you describe in Canada and Australia, yet increased prices in those markets anyway, so I think there's more to this than your analysis suggests (and if they weren't before, they definitely won't be now!).
The U.S. dollar has gone up against most other currencies in the time since the PS5's prices were originally set, and I think that's the main reason the U.S. price stayed the same.
I still haven’t seen either PS5 or XSX in stores, but with the Switch having such a strong lineup of games coming over the next few months, I’m not really itching to get either system.
I'm sure glad my wife and I already got ours! Dodged a bullet here for sure lol
Getting pissed off at a company for trying to get as much money as they can for their product is like getting mad at birds for shitting on statues. Sure it's annoying, but it's just what they do. If they're overcharging, then vote with your wallet.
Considering people are willing to pay over $1000 to get one on the black market I doubt the price hike will make much of a difference.
actually they are sitting unsold on FB marketplace for <$700
They need to sit longer until they're under $600.
These prices reflect almost exactly the relative fluctuations of the local currencies vs the US dollar. Sony pays for the components, manufacture, and shipping of PS5 from manufacturers in Asia to global markets in US dollars, which is why the feel the need to bring the other market prices in line with the US price.
We will have to wait and see what Nintendo and Microsoft do, but coupled with the huge increase in power prices, this could be a disastrous holiday sales season in the EU and Japan for Sony.
Also, as far as I am aware this is unprecedented in the history of games consoles. 2 years after launch the price should going down, not up, and as a neutral observer it’s highly demoralizing given what it probably means for the industry as a whole
yes. But with the Ukrainian war and China's threat to Taiwan prices of electronic components are rising significantly, Taiwan is the largest producer of chips on the planet any threat from China in that region causes price increases..
The market conditions are also unprecedented in the history of game consoles.
It makes somehow sense, because Euro lost 10 % of its value against Swiss Francs (CHF) and even 20 % against USD since September 2021.
We can all blame biden for this
There are many factors to inflation, including Biden, but he's only a small piece of the inflation pie. Sony could have kept prices the same but didn't.
on one hand... price increases suck and this could lead many to switch to something cheaper. on the other... it could spark even more interest in the PS5. People tend to associate price with worth (not value) so looking at a Series X and PS5 side by side, even though the X is cheaper and more powerful... it isnt a PS and many may still pay that price because they see PS as being worth it.
That brand has a way of swaying people regardless if its more $$. PS3 was exactly that but it didnt get a price increase... it was just expensive right from the start where as 360 was the better value with performance, price and quality games. Series (as an extension to XBO) has still yet to receive its big batch of new 1st party titles. So it is relying on 3rd party gamepass filler... but for how much longer can that work for them?
I'll still get one, even if it goes up in my market.
In Canada the PS5 is still so hard to get that it won't matter at all since they cant keep the console in stock. But, it might help boost sale of the Xbox series S , especially this holiday season because that console is available every where and Sony just made it $20 more attractive.
Nope
I live in the US, so the MSRP isn't getting raised here. But I have yet to see a PS5 (or a XSX) on store shelves since they released, so if I want one, I have to pay scalper prices. And since the Switch has a stronger lineup of upcoming games for the foreseeable future from my standpoint, it's not worth it.
They can keep sitting in their garages collecting dust. I won't buy one at anything more than MSRP. In the meantime, I have a new Zelda, three Persona games, NieR, and Tactics Ogre to look forward to, and I haven't started Xenoblade Chronicles 3 yet because I want to play through the first two. I can wait. Hopefully the shortages will be sorted before FFXVI releases.
It won't stop me buying one but it will delay it, I'm sure they are taking advantage of what they feel and is also reflected by analysts that its is a short term cycle so at a time in the gen where profit per hardware is usually at break even or minimal and they are selling everything they make straight out the door it's a no brainer to use these circumstances to make a profit since they can let the economic cycle take the blame and when things do normalise they then have the option if needed to drop the price and gain back most of those potential buyers who may have stopped looking for stock.
