Sony Forms PlayStation PC Label

Sony Forms PlayStation PC Label - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 28 October 2021 / 3,165 Views

Sony Interactive Entertainment has formed a new label for its PC gaming push as more PlayStation games are getting released on PC.

The company registered PlayStation PC LLC on April 13 of this year using its California headquarters, according to Corporation Wiki. Steam users this week spotted PlayStation had changed its PC released to PlayStation PC LLC from the PlayStation Mobile label.

PlayStation has already released Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone for PC, while God of War (2018) will launch for PC via Steam and Epic Games Store on January 14, 2022. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will also released for PC in 2022.

It is possible Sackboy: A Big Adventure might also be getting a release on PC.SteamDB listing for "Steel PC" has a change list by "sumoqa" and the developer for Sackboy: A Big Adventure is Sumo Digital.

The SteamDB listing also makes mention of Marmalade Content, which was in the Geforce NOW leak. In said leak Project Marmalade was Sackboy: A Big Adventure. The leak also mentioned God of War coming to PC.

Thanks, VideoGamesChronicle.

Wow! Sony is really going all in on PC if they're dedicating a division exclusively to the platform. I would not be surprised if they're working on a PlayStation launcher for PC at this point lol. They know they're games are big enough that they shouldn't have to pay Steam or EGS a cut.

They could make thier own launcher which i think they will, however they won't want to miss out on that giant Steam userbase either.

For sure! I'm guessing they may go the Microsoft route where despite having their own launcher, Xbox app, they're still selling their games on Steam. Plus, Sony does sell their games on EGS as well whereas Microsoft does not. So Sony could potentially have 3 selling points on PC.

Epic store’s USP is its lower sales cut. As they have the Xbox app, Microsoft don’t need that, but would still need Steam’s large audience.
If Sony did make their own app they could decide they don’t need EGS anymore.

Ubisoft which has developed its own launcher also releases a lot of its games in both Steam and Epic Games Store. Plus Sony has a minority stake in Epic Games and support each other with some of the PS timed console exclusives being also Epic Games timed exclusives for PC (Bugsnax, Oddworld: Soulstorm, Kena, Sifu etc.). If they create their own launcher, it wont hurt them to keep releasing their games on EGS.

At present, new releases from Ubisoft don’t appear on Steam. The last one I’m aware of is AC Odyssey. There definitely weren’t any from last Christmas season.

Yeah, they've been releasing exclusively on Epic Games Store as part of a deal they made, minus Ubisoft's own digital store. There hasn't been a new Ubisoft game on Steam since 2019 I think.

Yeah, sorry for the bad analogy. They still have many games on Steam, but haven't released anything after March 2019.

I think Epic Game Store makes the value of creating your own launcher is very low. There's a cost to developing your own launcher, and that cost probably exceeds the low royalty costs EGS charges.

Now, adding the ability to buy Sony PC games from the PS Now launcher, that might make sense depending on the level of investment required.

If they do and pull a Ubisoft, that'll be one way to get me to stop buying their games. They are doing great as they currently are, no need to toss an extra hoop into that mix.

yeah, launcher clutter is bad, we don't need anymore.

I don`t even think they will make their launcher but yes no reason to stop selling on steam.

As a Nintendo/Gamepass PC gamer, I would love for PS to do this! Gives them more financial incentive to put more games on PC if they keep more of the cut by having their own launcher.

Though my actual dream would be Sony games coming to Gamepass PC (not Gamepass console), but no way that happens lol.

I wonder if there's any chance of that happening in Japan, where they don't see Xbox/Microsoft in competition in the same way? Though Game Pass titles seem to always be global, rarely (if ever?) just in one region, so maybe that's a non-starter for those reason.

I think you're reading a bit too much into it. The PC releases had "PlayStation Mobile" attached as publisher which has always been a dumb name for the PC ports. Just because the name changed, doesn't necessarily mean that more resources are going to be spend to what was already known anyway.

If they keep coming 3-5 years later, you might be right. However, my suspicion is that the delay between PS5 and PC release will drop over time and that your prediction won't come true (at least, not for very many gamers).

Cool, hopefully it means more games coming to PC. One less console id need to own, since I only use my PS4 for exclusives.

Makes sense to have the dedicated label instead of using mobile, but the mobile label is missing notable relases.

Moral would be not being angry that games aren't being kept to a single console. Gatekeeping does nothing productive but get you upset that more people get to buy something that you had no part in creating. It's weird.
