April 2020 is the 38th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap in the US between the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when you align launches. The PS4 sold 796,621 more units than the Switch in the last month. However, in the last 12 months the Switch has grown its lead by 2.45 million units. The Switch currently leads by 1.59 million units.

The PlayStation 4 launched in the US on November 15, 2013, while the Nintendo Switch launched on March 3, 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

The 38th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is April 2020, while for the PlayStation 4 it is December 2016. The Switch has sold 19.25 million units, while the PlayStation 4 sold 17.66 million units during the same timeframe.

The PlayStation 4 has been available for 78 months in the US and has sold 33.11 million units in the country. The Nintendo Switch is currently 13.86 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 4.

Keeping a decent lead even in PS4's holiday period. Impressive for the little Switch.

X360 sold 13.5M until month 38 in the US, so Switch has a big lead currently. But X360 will strike back around month 60 with Kinect boost.

That's why I said on the long run. I know that the 360 had a slow start and a very big tail due to Kinect. Since the graphs now show the future sales of older consoles, this could lead to interesting charts down the road.

Whoa, this Animal Crossing boost even nullifies part of PS4s holiday boost. Incredible!

It is an "Animal Crossing + COVID-19" boost that we had.

It looks like Switch is going to kill the PS4 in Japan, slightly win in NA. However, PS4 looks like is going to have a pretty big lead in Europe which might be the region that keeps the PS4's lifetime sales over the Switch. Nintendo needs to focus their marketing efforts towards Europe to maximize their sales.

While it's still hard to say how things will go globally, I think Switch will do more than win slightly when it comes to the US or NA. It sold almost 2 mil in the last two months according to NPD numbers and while it ofc isn't gonna quite stay that strong I still expect it to be grow that lead and be ahead by a LOT at the end of this year. Unless it's sales slow to a crawl in the coming years, its gonna blow right past the PS4 and compete with the Wii and Xbox 360 in NA sales.

Seven holiday seasons for the PS4.
That's what the PS2 did in most regions too. Damn good longevity.
