The Witness has 'Sold Substantially More than 100,000 Units' - News

The Witness has been a huge success for creator Jonathan Blow. The game in its first week brought in over $5 million in revenue across all platforms and "sold substantially more than 100,000 units."

That is more than Braid sold in its first year. At the time of release Braid was considered an indie hit. Braid launched at $14.99, while The Witness launched at $39.9..

"I want to make clear that we did not make this game in order to make money," said Blow in a blog post. "We were trying to build a beautiful / interesting / intricate thing, first and foremost. The money just helps us stay in business in order to build new things. It is very easy on the Internet to read a financial posting like this cynically, so I urge folks out there not to do that."

The Witness is available on the PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.

Yikes, $40. I'll wait for a price cut. Too much to play already.

I'll wait for a physical release. Too expensive for a file that sits in some HDD, invisible to the naked eye.

Now I won't feel so bad waiting for a serious sale, heh.

So they took in substantially more than $4m already. Safe to say this was a big financial success.

Actually I think they reported about $5M, which would mean 125,000 copies.

Very good to hear. And that budget justifies the higher price point too. I'm surprised it was that high

Nice to see the game doing well. I'm not a fan of this particular devs tendency to complain or stick his foot in his mouth, but I can appreciate his dedication to his unique visions. Artists should be rewarded for work and dedication to ethical production of such, not personality.

The game worth every penny if you ask me. Good luck to them and hope it reach 1M mark.
