As I sat down to enjoy Christmas dinner - turkey with all the trimmings - my thoughts were not with the roast potatoes or the poorly translated (yet admirably cheap) Chinese Christmas cracker jokes but with the week's great upcoming sporting moments. What drama as Leicester City, the world's greatest football team, attempted to win yet more football matches! What thrills as those in Europe didn't see much sport due to well-deserved winter breaks! What spectacle as Americans and Canadians enjoying sports which bear no relation to this list!
And yet it was my Mother who had the real glint in her eye as she unwrapped her 'AttilaTheHunky, AttilaTheHunky1, AttilaTheHunky2' scarf from around her neck. 'It's the big match later' she exuded in some bastard accent 'Team AttilaTheHunky vs a collection of possible humans and overpowered AI opponents in Rocket League.' 'But Mother', I queried, 'is Rocket League even a sport?'

A deserved victory for the sports game that is not actually based on a sport, by virtue of being A) bloody brilliant and B) not another annual installment. Each of the other nominees have their virtues: Football Manager 2016 is one of the most compelling simulators in gaming, FIFA 16 is an addictive if lacking continuation of a stunningly successful series, and Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 is a massive improvement on previous editions.
None, however, have the charm or crowd-pleasing quality of Rocket League, a sports game that transcends the gaming world. All can agree, I think, that all sports games, and sport itself, would be improved by the addition of cages and rocket-propelled cars.

Not a real sports game
It plays very much like sports that we currently do have and is a game. It's also new and unique and clearly deserved the award.
