by William D'Angelo , posted on 06 November 2012 / 18,730 ViewsWelcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise.
This week we will be looking at the top 10 bestselling games on the Nintendo 64. Last week we looked at the top 10 bestselling games on the PlayStation and the week before that the top 10 bestselling games on the Gameboy Advance. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.
Looking at the top 10 bestselling games on the Nintendo 64, two games was released in 1996, three were released in 1997, two were released in 1998, and three were released in 1999.
The top 10 bestselling games on the Nintendo 64 sold a combined 66.28 million games. Only one game, Super Mario 64, sold 10 million or more units. Also seven of the top 10 games sold five million or more units, while all 10 did sell three million or more units.
All 10 games were published by Nintendo, however not all were first party. Nintendo owned a 49 percent state in Rare, which made the company second party. Goldeneye 007, Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong Racing, and Banjo-Kazooie were all developed by Rare.
When you compare first party to second party, there are six first party games and four second party games. The six first party games sold a combined 44.39 million units or 67.0 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The four second party games sold a combined 21.89 million units or 33.0 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
Taking a look at the top 10 bestselling games on the Nintendo 64 as a graph really shows how many different franchises are there. Each franchise had just one game in the top 10; however there are two games with Mario in the title and three games that had Mario as a playable character.
As a quick note here are other software sales for the Nintendo 64: The top 25 games sold two million or units and the top 51 games sold one million or more units. 96 games sold 500,000 or more units.
219.09 million games were sold on the Nintendo 64. Games published by Nintendo sold a combined 129.95 million units, or 59.3 percent of the total games sold for the platform. To compare there were 730.73 million games sold for the PlayStation, while 212.51 million of those games sold were published by Sony. This is 29.1 percent of the total games sold on the PlayStation.

I played them all, man, what a great console!
I played 8/10 of these games! Can't say the same for any other top 10 list.
Honestly, why does Nintendo even care about third party support, they seem to be doing pretty good on their own.
well the n64 sold about 30 million and the PS1 about 100 million you could can see what they would care about 3d party
Because if you don't have good 3rd party support, your customers move on to the competition.
Played them all! Only actually own 6 of those, but my jungle green console more than makes up for that.
i played 8/10 of those games. Only games I never played on that list are Super Smash Bros and Pokemon Stadium.
Super Mario 64 and Legend OoT = best Mario and Zelda game of all time and both first 3D game in their series.
Wow...what a list! Highest quality of games for a console in a top ten in sales list ever?
very good sw sales fopr a 33m hw market
own 9/10
Have all these games. Played them all to death, especially the top 4 and Star Fox. To me, N64 had the best library, everyone of these games except Donkey Kong here in this N64 list is the best of their respective series.
According to the Software sales from the DB on this site the N64 sold 225million games and on that.... there are a load of titles with no sales information on the DB games which were fairly popular but apparently didn't sell any units, so where is the 219m games number coming from then?
I played all of them, but i have to say that for me Mario Kart 64 is the most overrated Mario Kart in the series.. for me Super Mario Kart or Double Dash were better
The genre variety really does prove that despite Nintendo's reliance on franchises, they do take it seriously to offer up a well rounded meal.
Unsurprisingly though, all the games really ARE published by Nintendo.
Out of these I only missed out on Mario Kart 64 and Donkey Kong 64. Though I never did transfer any Pokémon to Pokémon Stadium. I just played the minigames with friends.
i played all
I like the variation in game genres in this top 10.
Amazing list of quality fun games, played them all except Pokemon.
that generation was fully gone for me I discovered girls....at the time
