Xbox earlier this week announced it will be making restructuring change across its different publishing arms and laying off 268 employees.

One of the restructuring changes is Obsidian Entertainment is being moved from Xbox Game Studios to under Bethesda to continue work on a new Fallout game in collaboration with Bethesda Game Studios, as well as Grounded.

Bethesda president Jill Braff in an email sent to staff told them the move is "primarily a change in reporting structure" and Obsidian will be keeping its identity.

"The creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of their studio and work," wrote Braff (via Aftermath). "[CEO] Feargus [Urquhart] and the Obsidian leadership team will continue to lead Obsidian, with the studio reporting to me. Bethesda Game Studios will continue to lead the Fallout franchise.

"Together, the teams will build on their longstanding relationship and the early work already underway on a new Fallout project, with more to share in the months ahead. This structure supports the franchise-led model we've been strengthening while keeping accountability for both the studio and the franchise clear."

She added, "I've had the opportunity to get to know Feargus Urquhart and his team over the past six years, and I have great respect for what they've built. Obsidian has extraordinary creative talent, deep expertise, and a long history of creating memorable games and experiences. I'm looking forward to working more closely with them."

These companies should be legally required to add "... for now" after every announcement where they claim nothing will change.

Why do I feel like I've heard a variation of this exact phrase more times than I care to count at this point? The creative freedom usually lasts about as long as one of their games doesn't reach the sales targets the parent company has set for it.

By that their creative identity includes only working on Fallout games.

To be fair New Vegas is by far their best game

True, I've enjoyed everything they've put out in the last decade or so. New Vegas was definitely better than Fallout 3.

Yeah, right. In 5-10 years, I bet it'll be Obsidian-flavoured Bethesda rather than distinctly Obsidian.

If it was just that, I really doubt they'd be doing this. If that reporting structure is really the main thing, then it's sure to have much more effect than it sounds.
