Weekly Sales Analysis, 31 December 2011 - Sales Plummet

Overview

Here we are looking at sales in the final week of 2011. As usual sales dropped like a rock this week, cut in half. There was no major release this week.

Software milestones this week in the top 20: Kinect Adventures! (X360) passes the 15 million mark; Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) passes the five million mark; Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC) Passes the two million mark; Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (X360) reaches three million sold; and Battlefield 3 (PS3) passes the four million mark.

Hardware sales are down across the board week on week, while the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are also up year on year. The PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and 3DS sold more than half a million units. Hardware milestones this week: The PSP passes the 73 million mark and the Xbox 360 passes the 64 million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

Week on week sales are down across the board. The 3DS is at the top with sales of 665,000, a drop of 1.05 million (-61%).  The PlayStation 3 is down 348,000 (-36%) to 623,000 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 698,000 (-56%) to 551,000 sold. The Wii sold 415,000 units, which is down 713,000 (-63%). The PSP sold 255,000 units, which is down 155,000 (-38%). The DS is down 227,000 (-57%) to 171,000 units. The Vita sold 55,000, which is down 52,000 (-49%). Total week on week sales are down 3.24 million (-54%) to 2.74 million.

Year on year sales are up for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and are down for the Wii, DS and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 61,000 (11%), the Wii is down 212,000 (-34%), and the Xbox 360 is up 91,000 (20%). The PSP is down 96,000 (-27%) and the DS is down a massive 464,000 (-73%). However with the DS and 3DS combined it is up 201,000 compared to the DS one year ago. Total year on year sales are up 100,000 (4%).

Hardware Home Consoles

Home console hardware sales have dropped below what they were during the holidays, except for the PlayStation 3 which just beat sales for the week of December 3. The PlayStation 3 has a 39 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 35 percent market share; and the Wii has a 26 percent market share. The PlayStation 3 takes the top spot for the first time since the week of November 5. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles are up massively.

Hardware Handhelds

The 3DS has the biggest drop this week, after sales skyrocketed for the holidays. It has outsold the DS by nearly than 4 to 1 and the PSP by more than 2 to 1. The PSP has outsold the DS for a second straight week. The PSP has a 60 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the DS has a 40 percent. The Vita has just an eight percent market share for the next generation of handhelds, while the 3DS holds the other 92 percent. Compared with ten weeks ago all three handhelds (excluding the Vita) are up.

Worldwide Software

There are no debuts in the top 40 this week.

Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Just Dance 3 (Wii) at number two with sales of 562,000. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (X360) is at number two with sales of 499,000. Kinect Adventures! (X360) is at number three with sales of 472,000. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PS3) is at number four with sales of 466,000. Mario Kart 7 (3DS) is at number five with sales of 453,000.

Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) is at number six with sales of 403,000. Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC) is at number seven with sales of 361,000. Battlefield 3 (X360) is at number eight with sales of 239,000. Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (X360) is at number nine with sales of 233,000. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Wii) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 230,000.

Software

Week on week software totals are down across the board. The Xbox 360 takes the top spot this week with 6.98 million games sold, a decrease of 6.19 million (-47%). The PlayStation 3 sold 6.05 million games, a decrease of 4.61 million (-43%). The Wii software sales are down 8.02 million (-58%) to 5.74 million. The DS sold 2.67 million games, which is down 3.47 million (-56%). The 3DS sold 1.91 million games, a decrease 2.47 million (-56%). PSP game sales are down 802,000 (-45%) to 1.00 million games sold. The Vita sold 56,000 games, which is a drop of 51,000 (-48%). Total combined software is down 25.60 million (-51%) week on week to 24.40 million.

Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and are down for the Wii, DS and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 2.09 million (53%), the Wii is down 1.87 million (-25%) and the Xbox 360 is up 2.00 million (39%). The DS is down 1.25 million (-32%) and the PSP is down 506,000 (-34%). Total combined software is up 2.38 million (11%) games sold year on year.

Software Home Consoles

The Xbox 360 takes the top spot from the Wii, for the first time since the week of December 3. The Xbox 360 has lead for six of the last 10 weeks, the Wii for three weeks and the PlayStation 3 for just one of the last ten weeks. The Xbox 360 has a 37 percent market share, the PlayStation 3 with 32 percent, and the Wii with 31 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago all three home consoles are up.

Software Handhelds

The DS and 3DS had the biggest drops this week, but remain in second and third respectively. The DS has a 73 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 27 percent market share. The 3DS has a 97 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has just a three percent market share. Compared to ten weeks ago the 3DS and DS are up, while the PSP is down just a tad.

I don't get it. How can PS3 be in 3rd during the holidays, only to retake 1st the moment they end? Crazy world. Regardless, I reckon we'll be seeing a lot more 3DS>PS3>360>Wii>Vita for the coming months...until Vita launches worldwide, that is ;)

Its weird that the wii and xbox have been no1 during the holidays but as soon as they finish ps3 goes straight back to no1

"The Vita only just launching this week in Japan" 0_o What? Okay of that topic though, pleasantly surprised the 3DS takes #1 again! And nicely surprised with the PS3 taking #2, also!
