Minecraft Reaches 4 Million Sold Ahead of Official Release
by William D'Angelo, posted on 09 November 2011 / 2,001 ViewsAccording to the official Minecraft website, Minecraft.net, more than four million people have bought the game and there are over 16 million registered users. This is a little over a week before the official release of the game on November 18 at MineCon.

Markus 'Notch' Persson has been developing the game since May 10, 2009. The Alpha was released a week later on May 17, 2009 and the Beta launched on December 20, 2010. Mojang is the name of the developer that Notch has formed which is based out of Stockholm, Sweden.
The Minecraft Wiki describes Minecraft as a "sandbox construction game...[that] involves players creating and destroying various types of blocks in a three dimensional environment. The player takes an avatar that can destroy or create blocks, forming fantastic structures, creations and artwork across the various multiplayer servers in multiple game modes."

Mojang has grown since the beginning when Notch was the only person working on the game. The team has grown to nine, including: game developers Jens Bergensten and Jakob Porser; business developer Daniel Kaplan; art director Markus Toivonen; managing director Carl Manneh; code ninja Tobias Mollstam; chief architect Daniel Frisk; and game crafter Aron Nieminen.
