Japanese software sales were quiet for the week, as there were no major releases. Macross, Dead Island, Just Dance, and a new Naruto game for PS3, PS3, Wii, and PSP respectively each sold about 50,000 units though, so software sales were not abysmal by any stretch, just mediocre as is typical for October.

10) Dragon Quest Collection (Wii) - 9,000
11) Dead Island (X360) - 8,000
14) F1 2011 (PS3) - 7,000
14) Monster Hunter Portable 3 (PSP) - 7,000
14) NBA 2k11 (PS3) - 7,000
15) Dark Souls (PS3) - 6,000
In addition to the games above, Forza Motorsport 4 (X360), AKB1/48 (PSP), Wii Sports Resort (Wii), Pokemon Black / White (DS), and Atsumete! Kirby (DS) should all be ranked in the top twenty in the final data.
Outside of new releases, software sales were quite weak again in Japan. Titles which sell well for a long time, such as Rhythm Heaven, Dragon Quest Collection, and Monster Hunter Portable 3 will be the indication that the seasonal doldrums are ending - when these titles no longer chart amongst the top games of Japan the rush of late year games will be fully on through January. For this week, the most interesting points are the Just Dance hold, which was very strong and bodes well for the game long term, and also the performance of the Western horror / zombie maiming game Dead Island. Between PS3 & X360, Dead Island opened to over 60,000 units which is strong enough for the title to top 100,000 units lifetime. Any time a western game tops 100,000 units in Japan, particularly as a new property, its a pretty strong result, so seeing two major Western titles perform fairly well in Japan is a bit rare.
Looking ahead, Final Fantasy Type-0 is the next major title in Japan. Preorders are at about 200,000 units with a couple days to go before release. An opening of 300,000 - 450,000 units is likely. Kirby Wii also releases next week and should open similarly to Epic Yarn last fall at about 100,000 units, but retain longer legs. Finally, Monster Hunter Portable 3G for the 3DS now has 150,000 preorders and with plenty of time before release, the game should be one of the major killer apps for 3DS over the winter holidays in Japan.
