Overview

Gears of War 3 (X360), as reported earlier this week sold more than three million copies in its opening week, to make it the biggest debut of the year and outselling its predecessor by more than a million copies. It is also the biggest opening for an exclusive on an Xbox platform that isn’t Halo. Gears of War 3 lead a strong week for both hardware and software, where the Wii is the only platform down week on week. There are eight debuts in the top 40, which is up from four last week. Software milestones this week: Gears of War 3 (X360) reaches three million in its opening week. Four games sold over 100,000, down from five last week, and the top 16 sold over 50,000, up from 13 last week.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware

Week on week sales are up for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, DS and 3DS, flat for the PSP and down for the Wii. The 3DS is at the top with sales of 232,000, which is up 10,000 (5%). Xbox 360 sales shoot up 86,000 (72%) to 205,000 units sold. The PlayStation 3 is up just 5,000 (3%) to 172,000. The Wii is the only platform down week on week as it drops just 5,000 (-5%) to 94,000. The DS is up only 4,000 (5%) week on week, as it sold 88,000 units this week. The PSP sold 74,000 units, which is the same as last week. Total week on week sales are up 100,000 (13%) to 865,000.

Year on year sales are down for every platform, except the Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 is down 38,000 (-18%), the Wii is down 39,000 (-29%), and the Xbox 360 is up 13,000 (7%). The PSP is down 50,000 (-40%) and the DS is down a massive 225,000 (-72%). Total year on year sales are down 107,000 (-11%).

Hardware Home Consoles

For this week the gap between the three home consoles shifts as the Xbox 360 takes the top spot for the first time since the week of June 11 where it tied for first. The Xbox 360 has a 44 percent market share; the PlayStation 3 has a 36 percent market share; and the Wii has a 20 percent market share. The PlayStation 3 is in second for the first time since the week of July 2 and the Wii is in third for a fifth straight week. Compared with ten weeks ago PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales are up, and Wii sales are down.

Hardware Handhelds

3DS remains well ahead of the DS and PSP outselling both of them combined for seventh straight week. The gap between the DS and PSP grows slightly, but remains small at just 14,000 this week compared to 38,000 the week of July 23. The DS has a 54 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the PSP a 46 percent. Compared with ten weeks ago 3DS sales are up and the DS and PSP sales are down.

Worldwide Software

Eight games debuted in the top 40 this week, up from four last week. Gears of War 3 (X360) debuted at the top with sales of 3.06 million which makes it the biggest debut of the year. In comparison Gears of War 2 (X360) the last game in the franchise opened with 1.95 million in sales. The game launched in all three regions.

Dark Souls (PS3) debuted at number two with sales of 282,000. The game launched in Japan and will launch in the America on October 4 and EMEAA on October 7.

F1 2011 (PS3) debuted at number three with sales of 156,000. The Xbox 360 version debuted at number four with sales of 123,000. The game launched in the Americas and EMEAA and will launch in Japan on October 6.

The ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection (PS3) debuted at number six with sales of 89,000. The game launched in Japan and will be in next week’s chart for the Americas and EMEAA.

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 6 (PSP) debuted at number nine with sales of 63,000. The game launched in Japan with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Senran Kagura: Shoujotachi no Shinei (3DS) debuted at number 15 with sales of 51,000. The game launched in Japan with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Busou Shinki: Battle Masters Mk. 2 (PSP) debuted at number 23 with sales of 33,000. The game launched in Japan with no plans to be released elsewhere.

To Heart 2 DX Plus (PS3) debuted at number 31 with sales of 24,000. The game launched in Japan with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Dead Island (X360) at number five with sales of 95,000. Dead Island (PS3) is at number seven with sales of 88,000. Wii Sports Resort is at number eight with sales of 64,000. Mario Kart Wii rounds out the top 10 with sales of 60,000.

Software

Week on week software totals are up for every platform except for the Wii. The Xbox 360 takes the top spot this week with 4.22 million games sold, a massive increase of 2.86 million (211%). The PlayStation 3 sold 1.83 million games, an increase of 196,000 (12%). Wii software sales are down 271,000 (-19%) to 1.13 million. The DS sold 793,000 games, which is up 68,000 (9%). PSP game sales are up 126,000 (47%) to 392,000 games sold. The 3DS sold 303,000 games, an increase of 59,000 (24%). Total combined software is up week on week to 8.67 million games sold a huge increase of 3.04 million (54%).

Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and down for the Wii, DS and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 260,000 (17%), the Wii is down 537,000 (-32%) and the Xbox 360 is up a massive 2.14 million (103%). The DS is down 1.33 million (-63%) and the PSP is down 295 (-43%). Total combined software is up 540,000 (7%) games sold year on year.

Software Home Consoles

For this week the gap between the three home consoles software sales has grown dramatically, due to the release of Gears of War 3 (X360). The Xbox 360 has a 59 percent market share, the PlayStation 3 with 25 percent, and the Wii with 16 percent. The Xbox 360 is in first for the first time since the week of June 18. The PlayStation 3 is in second for the first time since the week of August 20 and the Wii is in third for the third time in four weeks. Compared to ten weeks ago the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are up and the Wii is down.

Software Handhelds

The DS remains at the top as the gap between it and the PSP shrink slightly, as the DS has a 67 percent market share and the PSP has a 33 percent market share. 3DS software sales remain in third. Compared to ten weeks ago the 3DS and PSP are up and the DS is down.

Soon 3DS software will rise and stabilize above PSP. Then comes DS.

I wonder where 360 sales will be next week. PS3 will likely top it on hardware, but not software.

I wonder when the 3DS software will reach DS software. Probably in November and December, after all the big titles are released, before it goes down again for a few months.
